You can make a Samsung Galaxy home screen less attention-grabbing by removing unnecessary shortcuts and widgets, reducing notification badges, and using Android’s built-in Focus mode or other time-based controls for apps that still pull you in. Removing an icon does not uninstall its app, so you can keep apps available without giving them a place on your first screen.
1. Clear visual prompts from the main Home screen
Start with the first screen you see when you unlock your phone. Remove shortcuts and widgets that routinely draw your eye but do not support a task you need to do there.
- Remove an app shortcut: Touch and hold its icon, then tap Remove. Samsung says the app remains in the Apps screen; this removes only the Home screen shortcut. See Samsung’s instructions for adding and removing Home screen apps and widgets.
- Remove a distracting widget: Touch and hold it and choose the available removal option. Consider removing widgets that surface feeds, counts, or frequent prompts if they do not serve a necessary daily task.
- Keep deliberate entry points: Leave a small set of apps you intentionally use on the main panel. Move other shortcuts to another Home screen panel or leave them in the Apps screen. To move a shortcut or widget, Samsung documents touching and holding it, then dragging it to the desired location. Samsung’s Home screen guidance covers this gesture.
The goal is a layout that makes your chosen actions easy to reach without placing every app or feed in front of you. This is a practical organization choice, not a proven treatment or a guarantee of better focus.

2. Reduce notification badges without hiding alerts you need
App icon badges are visual indicators of notifications or messages. If a badge prompts you to open an app even when its alert can wait, consider disabling badges or choosing a less attention-grabbing badge configuration for that app. Keep cues for alerts you rely on.

Samsung documents badge controls in One UI Home, but the menu wording and location can vary. Look in your Home screen or notification settings for an option such as app icon badges. Samsung’s One UI Home badge instructions describe the feature and its settings.
3. Pause specific apps during focus periods
Use Focus mode when you want selected apps unavailable and their notifications paused for a defined period. Google’s documented path is Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode. Choose the apps to pause, then switch Focus mode on or set a schedule. While it is active, paused apps cannot be used and will not send notifications. Google also documents a temporary break option.

For a scheduled focus period, select a start and end time in the Focus mode controls and choose the days it should repeat, if that option appears on your device. The exact steps can vary; follow the closest equivalent in Settings if the menu differs. See Google’s Digital Wellbeing instructions.
4. Choose the right time-based control
These controls address different situations, so use only the ones that fit your needs:

Samsung and Google document these controls across different software generations, and menu labels can differ by device, carrier, region, and Android or One UI version. Samsung notes that One UI Home options may vary by software version, model, and region. If a path above does not match your phone, search Settings for the feature name—such as “Focus mode,” “app icon badges,” or “Do Not Disturb”—and use the closest equivalent available.
