Use Galaxy Enhance-X if you have a compatible Samsung Galaxy and need a targeted correction such as moiré removal, shadow cleanup, reflection removal, lens-distortion correction, or an old-photo restoration. Use Google Photos if you want a general editor tied to photo backup and organization, need access on both Android and iOS, or depend on Google’s broader set of AI tools.
Neither app is a universal winner. Availability depends on your exact phone, Android or One UI version, account, region and app rollout. The practical choice is the editor that supports your device and the specific problem in the image.

Enhance-X is a Samsung editor focused on correcting a particular defect or improving an image with a small number of AI-assisted controls. Its “Magic” function applies a one-tap improvement; individual controls let you choose a more specific change instead of accepting a single automatic treatment.

Targeted corrections
- Fix Moiré: reduces the colored ripples or interference patterns that can appear when you photograph a screen, fine fabric or another tightly repeating pattern.
- Remove Shadows: attempts to lift unwanted shadows while preserving the rest of the scene.
- Remove Reflection: is aimed at glare or reflected light across a subject, such as a picture behind glass.
- Fix Lens Distortion: corrects the bowing or stretching introduced by a lens, particularly near the edges of a frame.
- Old Photo: is intended for aging or damaged-looking photographs rather than ordinary exposure adjustment.
- Brighten, Fix Blur and Sharpen: provide focused adjustments for common problems. They cannot recreate detail that was never captured, and the visible result will depend on the source image.
HDR and resolution controls
Samsung describes HDR intensity levels from 0 through 4, giving you a graduated control rather than a simple on/off switch. It also describes an Upscale tool for images under 1 megapixel that can increase resolution by up to four times. “Up to four times” is Samsung’s stated feature limit; it is not a promise that a small or blurry image will gain four times as much real detail.
Why the focused toolset matters
If you already know what is wrong with a photograph, a named control is easier to evaluate than a general enhancement button. A screen photograph with moiré, a portrait with a strong cast shadow, or a document shot through glass gives Enhance-X a clearly defined job. The trade-off is breadth: the app is not documented as a complete photo-library, backup and sharing service in the way Google Photos is.
What Google Photos adds beyond a basic editor
Google Photos combines editing with a searchable, organized photo library and backup. Google’s product information says Photos works on Android and iOS, which makes it the more practical single library when your household or workflow uses more than one mobile platform.
Everyday editing
Google’s editing documentation covers crop, perspective, tone controls and filters, along with tools such as Auto frame, HDR effect and Portrait light. These are useful when the task is composition, exposure or a consistent look rather than a single Samsung-specific correction.

AI-assisted edits
- Magic Eraser: removes selected distractions from a scene.
- Move: can reposition a subject or object as part of an AI edit where the feature is eligible.
- AI Enhance: applies an automatic improvement.
- Photo Unblur: attempts to improve a soft image or blurry face; it does not guarantee recovery of missing detail.
- Best Take: can help choose a more favorable expression in supported multi-shot situations.
- Ask Photos: uses the broader Photos service to find or work with pictures through natural-language requests where available.
Google’s Android help page says most editing tools require Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB of RAM. Some tools require 4 GB or 6 GB, some are Pixel-only, and some must be downloaded before they appear. Google also warns that output can vary by device. Those requirements describe eligibility, not a guarantee that every listed tool will be offered on every Galaxy phone or on iOS.
A recent portrait-retouching rollout
On April 20, 2026, Google announced a gradual global rollout of portrait touch-up controls for healing, smoothing, under-eye adjustment, irises, teeth, eyebrows and lips. Google specified Android 9.0 or later and at least 4 GB of RAM for that rollout. Because it is gradual, a phone that meets those technical conditions may still not show the controls immediately.
Which app works on your phone?
Checking Galaxy Enhance-X
Samsung’s June 20, 2023 announcement listed the Galaxy S23, S22, S21, S20 and Note20 families, plus certain Z Fold and Z Flip devices running One UI 5.1 or later. That list is historical. It should not be presented as a definitive 2026 compatibility matrix, because Samsung can add, remove or limit support through later app and firmware releases.

- Identify your exact Galaxy model and current One UI/Android version in Settings > About phone and Settings > Software update.
- Open the current Galaxy Store listing for Enhance-X on that phone and check whether the app is offered and which requirements it states.
- Install pending Galaxy Store and system updates, then reopen the listing. A missing feature can reflect an app version or staged rollout rather than a hardware failure.
- If the app installs but a tool is absent, treat that tool as unavailable on that device until Samsung’s current listing or support documentation says otherwise.
A Samsung Members overview published in August 2026 describes Enhance-X as an evolving, experimental feature set and warns that some functions may contain errors. That is a reason to keep the original file and to avoid assuming that a tool documented on one Galaxy model behaves identically on another.

Checking Google Photos
- Update Google Photos from your device’s app store and confirm the phone’s Android version and RAM.
- Open a photo and choose Edit. The tools shown in the editor are the tools eligible for that device, account and rollout.
- If an AI control displays a download prompt, complete the download on Wi-Fi or mobile data before trying the edit again.
- If a feature is missing, check whether Google identifies it as Pixel-only, whether the phone meets the Android and RAM requirement, and whether the feature is still rolling out in your region.
On iOS, Google Photos remains useful for the library and its supported editing controls, but Android-specific requirements and Pixel-only tools do not become universal merely because the app is available on an iPhone.

How to use each editor without losing the original
Galaxy Enhance-X workflow
Samsung’s published material names the functions but does not provide one universal screen path for every current Galaxy version. Labels and placement can change, so use the current app interface rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Open Enhance-X on a compatible Galaxy and choose the photo you want to change.
- Try Magic when you want a one-tap enhancement, or select the named correction that matches the defect.
- For HDR, choose the intensity level that preserves highlight and shadow detail instead of assuming the highest value is best.
- For Upscale, confirm that the source is under 1 MP if you are using the feature Samsung describes for that image size.
- Inspect faces, fine edges and text at full size. AI corrections can introduce halos, smearing or unnatural texture.
- Save a separate copy whenever the app offers that choice. If the option is not visible, duplicate the image in Gallery before editing.
Google Photos workflow
- Open Google Photos and select the image.
- Tap Edit, then choose the category or named tool you need, such as Crop, Magic Eraser, Unblur or HDR effect.
- Download an editing tool if Google prompts you to do so.
- Review the preview at both normal viewing size and high magnification. Check hair, fingers, text and straight architectural lines for AI artifacts.
- Use the save menu to save the edit to the original or save a copy, depending on whether you want the existing library item changed.
- Use Revert when you need to return an edited item to its prior state.
Originals, copies and reversibility
Google Photos explicitly documents two safer workflows: save an edit over the original, or save a copy while leaving the source item available. It also documents reverting edits. The copy option is the better default when you are experimenting with AI because it preserves a clean comparison and avoids depending on a later recovery step.

Do not assume that every Enhance-X operation is nondestructive just because Gallery has those controls. Keep an untouched duplicate before applying an unusual correction, an upscale or an old-photo treatment.

Storage, backup and account trade-offs
Google Photos storage
Google states that a Google Account includes 15 GB of storage shared across Google Photos, Gmail and Google Drive. A large photo library can therefore consume space that is also needed for email and files. Additional storage and some premium AI features may be associated with Google One, while Google also describes no-cost access for eligible users to certain functions. Do not interpret that as every AI tool being free, universal or permanently available.
Enhance-X’s role
Enhance-X is best understood as an editing utility on a Galaxy device, not as a documented replacement for a cross-platform backup strategy. If the photos matter, maintain a separate backup regardless of which editor produced the final copy. Samsung Gallery’s local save and revert controls do not by themselves establish cloud retention or cross-device access.

Enhance-X is not available in the store
- Verify the exact model, region and One UI version instead of relying on the 2023 Samsung list.
- Install current system and Galaxy Store updates.
- Check whether the app is hidden by regional availability or account restrictions.
- Do not sideload an unverified package simply to obtain a feature; it can create security and compatibility problems.
A named Enhance-X tool is missing
Samsung may expose different functions by model, app build or rollout stage. A feature described in the 2023 announcement is not proof that it remains enabled on every supported phone. If the current listing and app do not show it, use another editor for that task or retain the original until support is confirmed.

Google Photos shows fewer AI controls than a tutorial
- Check Android version and RAM. Google documents a baseline of Android 8.0 and 3 GB RAM for most tools, with higher requirements for some functions.
- Look for a Pixel-only designation.
- Complete any required tool download.
- Allow for a gradual rollout, especially for newer portrait controls.
- Confirm that the Google account and region are eligible.
The result looks artificial
AI editing is an estimate, not a recovery of information that was never captured. Compare the edited file with the original at 100 percent and inspect hair, skin, text, repeating patterns and straight lines. Lower the HDR intensity, undo the edit or start from a clean copy when the correction creates halos, plastic-looking skin or warped geometry.

You cannot undo an Enhance-X edit
Stop making further changes and locate the untouched duplicate in Gallery or your backup. Samsung documents Revert in Gallery, but the available control can depend on how the file was edited and saved. This is why duplicating the source before an experimental Enhance-X operation is safer than assuming every tool can be reversed later.
A practical decision framework
Choose Enhance-X when all three conditions fit
- You are using a Galaxy model on which the current app is actually available.
- Your main problem matches a named tool such as Fix Moiré, Remove Shadows, Remove Reflection, Fix Lens Distortion or Old Photo.
- You are comfortable managing copies and backups outside the editor’s immediate correction workflow.
Choose Google Photos when any of these priorities dominates
- You want one library that works on Android and iOS.
- You need editing alongside backup, search, organization and sharing.
- Your task is general cleanup, object removal, cropping, perspective correction or supported face deblurring.
- You need Google’s newer AI tools and your specific phone, account and region qualify.
Use both when they solve different stages
A Galaxy owner does not have to make this an exclusive choice. You can use Enhance-X for a specific moiré, shadow, reflection or distortion correction, then keep the resulting copy in Google Photos for backup and organization. Conversely, you can use Google Photos for library-wide edits and open Enhance-X only when its targeted controls match a stubborn defect. Keep the original in either workflow and avoid repeatedly exporting and recompressing the same image.
The bottom line
Galaxy Enhance-X is the more purpose-built choice for specialized corrections on a compatible Galaxy. Google Photos is the more complete everyday environment when cross-platform access, backup, organization and a broad, eligibility-dependent AI editor matter. Check current device support before choosing Enhance-X, check the exact tool requirements in Google Photos, and treat both vendors’ enhancement claims as capabilities rather than proof of a universal image-quality advantage.
