There is no single Samsung Galaxy switch for every download that says “Wi-Fi only.” The right setting depends on whether the stalled item is a system update, a Google Play app, a Galaxy Store app, or one specific app. Change the matching setting below; allowing mobile data may use your plan’s allowance or incur charges, and carrier restrictions can still apply.
First identify which download is waiting

Google Play and Galaxy Store have separate app-update preferences, so changing one does not change the other. Samsung also cautions that some Play Store menu paths vary by Play Store version, device model, and software version. Samsung’s app-update instructions cover both stores.
Allow Google Play app updates over mobile data
- Open Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, then go to Settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps.
- Choose an option that permits mobile data if you want automatic updates without Wi-Fi. Read the choices shown on your phone: wording and available options can vary. “Update over Wi-Fi only” restricts automatic app updates to Wi-Fi; “Don’t auto-update apps” turns off automatic updates.
This setting concerns automatic app updates in Google Play. It is not a universal control for Galaxy Store apps or Samsung system software.
Change Galaxy Store app updates separately
Open Galaxy Store > Menu > Settings > Auto update apps, then select the setting you want. If apps from both stores are waiting for Wi-Fi, review each store’s preference individually. Samsung Canada’s Galaxy app-update guide documents these separate routes.

Allow a Samsung system update to use mobile data
Samsung Electronics Service’s Korea support guidance documents Settings > Software update > Wi-Fi auto download for Android 9–12-era menus. On a phone that has this option, switching off Wi-Fi auto-download changes how the update is automatically downloaded; it does not itself cancel the update. The guidance says a download may proceed on mobile data when that connection is active, but carrier rules can block large downloads or lead to charges. Samsung Electronics Service’s instructions are Korea-specific and should not be treated as confirmation that every current Galaxy model or carrier offers the same behavior.
If your menus differ, search Settings for “Software update” or consult the support guide for your exact model and carrier. Do not assume that changing the Wi-Fi auto-download preference guarantees that a system update can be downloaded over cellular.

Check network limits for one app
On supported models, open Settings > Connections > Data usage > Allowed networks for apps, select the app, and choose the network it may use. Samsung’s Galaxy S23-series manual documents this control; it may not be present on every model. Mobile data used by an app can incur additional charges. See the Samsung Galaxy S23-series manual.

If Google Play still will not download without Wi-Fi
Check whether Data Saver is restricting background data. Google says Play Store may be affected when Wi-Fi is unavailable if Data Saver is on. On Android 7.0 or later, Google’s instructions describe allowing unrestricted background data for Google Play in Data Saver settings. This is separate from the Play Store’s auto-update preference: changing the update preference may not override Android’s background-data restriction.
