To use a downloaded song as your Samsung Galaxy ringtone, save the audio file directly on the phone, then open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone. Tap Add (the plus icon), choose the file, and tap Done. On a dual-SIM model, first choose whether the change applies to SIM 1 or SIM 2.
The labels and screen order can differ by Galaxy model, country, carrier software, and One UI version. If your screen does not match these steps, use the manual or Samsung support page for your exact model and region.
What you need before setting the ringtone
Samsung’s ringtone picker can use an audio file that is stored locally on the Galaxy phone. The file may have been downloaded with the phone’s browser, copied from a computer, or transferred from another device. It must be present in the phone’s storage; merely having access to a song through a streaming subscription is not enough.

Supported audio formats
Samsung’s UK support guide lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC as supported sound formats. It specifically says that an M4A file must be converted to one of those formats before it can be used on a Samsung phone.

| Format | Samsung guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Listed as supported | Select the file in the ringtone picker. |
| WMA | Listed as supported | Select the file in the ringtone picker. |
| AAC | Listed as supported | Select the file in the ringtone picker. |
| FLAC | Listed as supported | Select the file in the ringtone picker. |
| M4A | Samsung says it needs conversion | Convert it to MP3, WMA, AAC, or FLAC, then copy the converted file to the phone. |
The format list is a compatibility specification, not a guarantee that every file with that extension will play. A damaged download, an unusual codec, or a file protected by a content provider can still be rejected.
Streaming tracks are different from downloaded files
A track available for offline listening in a streaming app is normally an app-managed cache, not a regular audio file that Android can expose to the ringtone picker. Samsung’s guidance says that tracks played through a streaming service, including Spotify, cannot be selected directly as ringtones. Use a purchased or otherwise directly downloaded, non-protected audio file instead.
Prepare and verify the audio file
Before opening Settings, complete the file transfer and test the file in the phone’s file manager. In My Files or another file browser, open the location where you saved it, such as Download or a music folder, and play it. This confirms that the copy finished and that the phone can decode the file. A browser bookmark, cloud placeholder, or song that only opens inside a streaming application is not the same as a local audio file.
If the file came from a computer or another phone, copy the actual audio file rather than a shortcut. Wait for the transfer to finish before opening the ringtone picker. If you converted an M4A file, keep the converted copy on the phone and select that copy; renaming “.m4a” to “.mp3” does not change the underlying format. Samsung’s documented requirement is conversion to MP3, WMA, AAC, or FLAC.
Use a copy that you are allowed to download and use. Subscription services can keep offline songs in a protected cache, and those cached tracks are not selectable through Samsung’s ringtone workflow. The procedure does not require a special cable, headset, speaker, or ringtone application.
Set one downloaded ringtone for incoming calls
These steps follow the current Samsung workflow. Keep the audio file on the phone while you make the change.

- Open Settings. Swipe down twice and tap the gear icon, or open the Settings app from the app screen.
- Open the sound controls. Tap Sounds and vibration, then tap Ringtone.
- Choose a SIM if prompted. On a dual-SIM Galaxy, select SIM 1 or SIM 2. Samsung’s UK instructions note that a non-dual-SIM phone shows only SIM 1.
- Open the local-file picker. Tap Add or the plus icon. The wording and icon can vary slightly by model.
- Locate the audio file. The picker may open on Tracks. Tap the file if it appears. If it does not, switch to Folders and browse to the directory where the download was saved. Some versions also provide a search control in this screen.
- Choose how the song starts. Turn on Play selected highlights only if you want Samsung to use a selected portion rather than beginning at the start of the file. Leave it off to play from the beginning.
- Save the choice. Tap Done. The chosen file becomes the ringtone for the SIM you selected, or the phone’s general incoming-call ringtone on a single-SIM device.
If the file is long, using selected highlights can make the incoming-call sound reach its recognizable part sooner. This option changes where playback starts; it does not edit the original audio file.
When the downloaded file does not appear
Most missing-file problems come from the file’s location, format, or licensing rather than from the ringtone setting itself. Work through these checks in order.
- Confirm that the file is actually on the phone. Open the Files or My Files app and play the file from local storage. A link in a browser, cloud-only item, or streaming-app download does not satisfy Samsung’s local-file requirement.
- Check both picker views. In the ringtone picker, look under Tracks first, then switch to Folders. Browse the Download folder and any music folder where you saved the file.
- Check the extension. MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC are the formats Samsung lists. Convert M4A before trying again. If a file has a misleading extension, changing the name alone does not convert its audio data.
- Download again if playback fails. A partially downloaded or corrupted file may be visible in storage but absent from the picker or silent when selected.
- Use an unprotected copy. Offline tracks controlled by a streaming service are not ordinary ringtone files. Obtain a version that the seller or rights holder permits you to download and use locally.
- Reopen Settings after the transfer. Finish the download or copy operation first, then close and reopen the ringtone picker so it can rescan storage.
Do not assume that a file is missing just because it is not listed alphabetically. Samsung’s folder view is the reliable way to inspect another directory, and some Galaxy versions include a search field on the selection screen.
Choose a ringtone for one contact only
You can leave the general ringtone unchanged and assign a different sound to an individual caller. Samsung’s instructions place this control in the Phone or Contacts editing screen.
- Open the Phone or Contacts app.
- Open the person’s contact card and choose Edit.
- If the ringtone field is hidden, tap View more or the control that reveals additional fields.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Select a built-in tone, or use the add/local-file option to choose a music file stored on the phone.
- Save the contact.
On some devices and software versions, the contact must be saved to the mobile device rather than only to an account or SIM card before a personal ringtone can be assigned. If the ringtone field is unavailable, move or recreate the contact in the phone’s storage, then edit it again. The exact account options vary by model and Android/One UI version.
A contact-specific tone is independent of the general ringtone. Changing the global ringtone later does not require you to reselect the contact’s sound, while deleting or moving the local file can make that custom choice unavailable on some phones. Keep the selected file in local storage unless you intentionally want to replace the tone.

Understand the available choices
| Choice | Where you set it | Result |
|---|---|---|
| One ringtone for incoming calls | Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone | The selected sound is used for calls to numbers that do not have a contact-specific tone. |
| Different ringtone for a contact | Phone or Contacts > contact > Edit > Ringtone | Calls from that saved contact use the assigned tone. |
| Different ringtone per SIM | Ringtone screen on a dual-SIM phone | SIM 1 and SIM 2 can have separate incoming-call sounds when the model exposes both controls. |
| Song from the beginning | Leave Play selected highlights only off | Playback starts at the beginning of the selected file. |
| Samsung-selected portion | Turn on Play selected highlights only | The ringtone uses a highlighted section instead of always starting at zero. |
These are independent choices. For example, you can use one local MP3 for SIM 1, a different local file for SIM 2, and a contact-specific tone that overrides the general setting for one person.
Dual-SIM details
Galaxy phones with two active SIMs may show a SIM choice immediately after you tap Ringtone. Set each line separately if you want callers to hear different sounds depending on which number they call. If the phone displays only SIM 1, it is either a single-SIM model or the current software is exposing only one ringtone control.
Do not confuse a SIM-specific ringtone with a contact-specific ringtone. A contact tone is tied to the caller and can take precedence over the general tone for that line. The SIM selection controls which line’s general ringtone you are editing.

Why a ringtone can be selected but still not heard
If the file is listed and saved but an incoming call is silent, check the phone’s sound state before replacing the file.
- Check the calling app’s own settings. A calling app may have a separate notification or call-sound control. Review that app’s sound settings when calls arrive through an app rather than the regular Phone dialer.
- Turn off Mute all sounds. In Settings, search for Mute all sounds under accessibility or sound-related controls and make sure it is disabled.
- Check Airplane mode. Airplane mode can prevent normal cellular calls and make ringtone testing impossible. Disable it when you are testing the Phone app.
- Review Modes and Routines. A mode or routine may change volume, mute calls, or activate a quiet profile at a particular time or location.
- Check Do not disturb. Turn off Do not disturb, or inspect its exceptions if you need it active for other notifications.
- Verify the phone’s volume state. Make sure the device is not set to vibrate or silent when you expect an audible tone. Raise the ringtone volume with the hardware volume key and open the expanded volume controls if necessary.
- Restart the phone. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting after these checks. Test with a normal cellular call after the phone starts again.
If the ringtone works after disabling a mode, routine, or Do not disturb rule, edit that rule rather than changing the audio file. If only one calling app is silent, troubleshoot that app’s sound settings instead of resetting the entire phone.
Quick diagnosis by symptom
| What you see | Likely check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The song is absent from Tracks | It may be in another folder. | Open Folders, browse Download or the music directory, and use search if offered. |
| The file is absent from Tracks and Folders | The transfer may not be complete, or the format may be unsupported. | Play it in My Files, verify the extension, convert M4A, then reopen the picker. |
| The file appears but will not play | The download may be damaged or protected. | Download a fresh, permitted local copy in a listed format. |
| The ringtone saves but calls are silent | The phone or calling app may be muted. | Check app sound controls, Mute all sounds, Airplane mode, Modes and Routines, Do not disturb, and volume. |
| Only one number has the wrong tone | A contact-specific ringtone may override the general setting. | Edit that contact and review its Ringtone field. |
| Only one SIM has the wrong tone | The other SIM’s setting may have been changed. | Return to Ringtone and select the intended SIM before choosing the file. |
Factory reset is a last resort
Samsung lists a factory reset only after other troubleshooting has failed. A reset erases personal data and settings, so back up photos, contacts, messages, and other important information first. A reset is not an appropriate first response to a file that is absent from the picker, an M4A that needs conversion, or a phone that is simply muted.

Menu differences across Galaxy phones
Samsung’s US, UK, Hong Kong, and Austria support materials describe the same basic process but caution that menus vary by model, market, and software version. A Hong Kong support page explicitly limits its information to that market. Samsung’s UK guide was updated June 5, 2026; a Hong Kong guide was updated February 3, 2026; and an Austria support page was updated September 19, 2026. Those dates indicate that the guidance is maintained, not that every Galaxy model has identical screens.

Your phone may call the add control Add, show only a plus icon, place the file browser behind a menu, or use slightly different wording for the sound settings. If a step is missing, search Settings for Ringtone, then follow the closest matching path in the manual for your model and local Samsung support site. Avoid installing a third-party ringtone app until you have confirmed that the local file and format meet Samsung’s requirements.
Quick verification checklist
- The audio file is stored directly on the Galaxy phone, not only inside a streaming app.
- The file is MP3, WMA, AAC, or FLAC, or an M4A converted to one of those formats.
- You opened Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone.
- You selected the correct SIM when the phone asked.
- You checked both Tracks and Folders in the picker.
- You enabled or disabled Play selected highlights only according to how you want the song to start.
- You tapped Done and tested with a real incoming call.
- If the phone stayed silent, you checked app sound controls, Mute all sounds, Airplane mode, Modes and Routines, Do not disturb, volume, and then restarted.
Frequently Asked Questions
