The Galaxy setting behind a smaller mobile bill is Data saver. On supported Samsung Galaxy phones, go to Settings → Connections → Data usage → Data saver and switch it on. Samsung says the feature prevents some apps from sending or receiving data in the background. That can reduce cellular-data consumption enough to keep you under a plan allowance and avoid overage charges, but it does not reduce your carrier’s base monthly price. The amount saved depends on your plan and usage; Samsung does not publish a universal dollar figure.
What Data saver actually changes
Data saver focuses on background mobile-data traffic—activity that happens when an app is not actively on screen. Examples include an app checking for new content, synchronizing files, refreshing feeds or uploading data in the background. It is not a blanket disconnect switch: apps you are actively using can still communicate, and you can exempt important apps.
Reducing background traffic matters most when your plan has a small high-speed allowance, charges for overages, or slows service after a threshold. If your plan includes unlimited data with no price consequence for additional usage, the setting may improve efficiency without changing your bill.
How to turn on Data saver
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap Data usage.
- Tap Data saver, then switch it on.
- Open the exception list. Samsung may label it Allowed to use data while Data saver is on or Apps that can always use data.
- Allow background access only for apps that must remain current, such as a messaging, security or work app.
Menu names and locations can differ by Galaxy model, One UI or Android version, carrier, country and whether a SIM is active. If you cannot find the menu, use the Settings search field for “Data saver” or “data usage.”

Set a warning and a hard limit
Data saver works best with Galaxy’s usage controls. In Data usage, open Billing cycle and data warning. Enter the first day of your carrier’s billing cycle, then set a warning threshold. The phone can alert you as usage approaches that amount.
Where your software provides it, set a mobile-data limit below your plan’s allowance. A limit is a stronger guardrail than a warning: once the device reaches it, Android can switch off mobile data until you change the setting. Leave room for differences between the phone’s meter and your carrier’s meter, and remember that a limit set on the wrong billing-cycle date will not line up with your invoice.

Choose exceptions carefully
When Data saver blocks background access, an app may not refresh until you open it. Notifications, cloud synchronization, location updates or automatic uploads can therefore arrive later. Add an exception only when delayed background activity creates a real problem. Review the list after installing a new app or changing how you use an existing one.
Data saver versus roaming controls
Data saver controls ordinary mobile-data use; it is not a roaming safeguard. Data roaming is a separate setting. Samsung warns that roaming can create additional charges, particularly when you use a phone outside your home country. Before international travel, check your carrier’s roaming terms and the phone’s roaming control instead of relying on Data saver alone.

Why your bill may not change immediately
- The carrier’s monthly access charge is separate from measured data usage.
- Background traffic may be a small share of your total; video, hotspot use and large downloads can dominate consumption.
- Your phone and carrier may calculate usage differently or reset on different dates.
- A plan may throttle speed rather than charge an overage, so the benefit could be avoiding a slowdown instead of reducing a fee.
- Wi-Fi use, dual-SIM selection and the active-SIM status can change which connection is counted.
To judge the result, record the carrier’s data total for a complete billing cycle before and after enabling the setting, while keeping major usage habits comparable. The phone’s counter is useful for spotting trends but is not a promise of a particular saving.

An app stops updating
Open Settings → Connections → Data usage → Data saver and add that app to the always-allowed list. If it still fails, check the app’s own battery, background-data and notification permissions.

The warning arrives at the wrong time
Return to Billing cycle and data warning and set the cycle’s first day to match the carrier invoice. Recheck the value after a SIM or carrier change.
You still receive roaming charges
Review the separate Data roaming control and your carrier’s international policy. Data saver does not replace roaming restrictions.

The menus do not match
Galaxy screens vary by model, One UI/software version, carrier and region. Search Settings for “Data saver,” and verify that mobile data is enabled for the SIM you intend to monitor.
