On a supported Samsung Galaxy, open the Camera app and select a photo resolution using the resolution or ratio-and-resolution control shown on your screen. Available choices and exact taps vary by phone model, software version, Camera app, and region, so use the options your device actually offers.
How to change photo resolution on a Samsung Galaxy

Open the Camera app and switch to Photo mode.

Look for a photo resolution or ratio-and-resolution control on the camera screen. Depending on your model, the control may appear as an image-ratio icon or a resolution label.

Tap the control and choose an available high-resolution option. Samsung’s Australian guide gives one supported-device example: tap Camera Ratio and choose 3:4 (64MP High Resolution). This is not a universal setting or option for every Galaxy.

Take the photo. On some phones, consecutive high-resolution shots may take longer to process.

If you cannot find the control, check your phone’s Camera settings. Samsung’s guides describe different entry points, including Camera > Menu > Settings and, on some interfaces, Quick controls > Settings. The path can differ by model and software; Samsung notes that Android 15 and earlier may use a different settings entry point. Check support for your exact model if the option is missing.
What the resolution and ratio labels mean
Megapixel count describes image resolution; aspect ratio describes the shape of the frame. A control may combine both, such as 3:4 (64MP High Resolution). A ratio label such as 3:4 by itself does not tell you the megapixel count.

Samsung lists settings such as 12M, 50M, and 200M as examples, but not every Galaxy offers all of them. Choose from the options displayed on your phone. Samsung also notes that available zoom magnification can change with the selected resolution.

What to expect from a higher-resolution photo

Larger files: Samsung’s Galaxy S9+ user manual explains that higher-resolution photos produce larger files and require more storage. It does not provide a universal file-size estimate.

Why a Samsung photo may save at a lower megapixel count
First identify your exact Galaxy model, zoom level, shooting mode, and Photo enhancer setting. Automatic resolution behavior is model- and situation-dependent; Samsung’s examples below apply specifically to Galaxy S26 models.
Galaxy S26 and S26+
Samsung says these models may save at 12MP instead of 24MP depending on zoom, shooting mode, and environmental factors. Its stated 24MP zoom range is 1x–1.9x.

Galaxy S26 Ultra
Samsung gives the 24MP zoom ranges as 0.6x–1.9x and 5x–9.9x. Outside those ranges, the phone may save a 12MP photo instead, depending on the shooting situation.
Capture conditions Samsung lists for Galaxy S26
Samsung says the S26 family may automatically use 12MP for close-ups, continuous or burst shooting, flash, Night mode, document scans, or when operating temperature is abnormal. Photo enhancer can also matter: Samsung says Prioritize quality is the setting that saves at 24MP; Balanced and Prioritize speed do not.
How to resize a photo you have already taken
Changing the camera resolution affects new captures. To reduce the dimensions of an existing image, Samsung documents a separate Gallery workflow: open the photo, choose Edit > More options > Resize, and select an available size. This changes the saved image; it is not a camera capture-resolution setting. Samsung’s documented workflow does not offer increasing an image beyond its original size, and availability or labels can vary by device.
