To back up a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, use Smart Switch for a separate copy on a computer or compatible USB/microSD storage, or use a supported cloud service for selected backup or synced data. To move to a new phone, use Smart Switch’s direct transfer. These methods overlap, but a transfer is not a backup you can restore later.
Choose between backup, restore, transfer, and sync
Start with what you need to do. Samsung lists Smart Switch, Samsung Cloud, Google One, and OneDrive among its available methods, but they are not interchangeable. The options shown and the data they handle can depend on your Galaxy model, region, software version, and account.
| What you need | Method to consider | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a separate copy for later recovery | Smart Switch to a computer or compatible external storage | Stores a backup you can restore from the computer or storage device. |
| Move content to another phone now | Smart Switch direct transfer by cable or Wi-Fi | Moves supported data between devices; it does not by itself leave you with a separate backup. |
| Back up or restore through an account | Samsung Cloud or Google One, where available | Samsung lists both as backup and restore options. Check your account and current settings for what is included. |
| Keep selected content synchronized | OneDrive | Samsung lists OneDrive as a synchronization option, rather than describing it as a full-device backup. |
Samsung’s overview of Galaxy backup methods, last updated August 21, 2024, is available at Methods to back up and restore data to Galaxy devices.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

This is the practical option when you want a removable local copy. Samsung says not all phones and tablets support microSD cards, so use a card only if your model has a slot. For USB storage, check the phone’s port and whether you need a USB OTG adapter. Storage must have enough free space for the content you select.

- Check compatibility and storage. Confirm your Galaxy supports the card or USB device. Samsung says an external hard drive connected through OTG must use FAT or exFAT for Galaxy recognition; some hard drives also need their own power. See Samsung U.S. Smart Switch external-storage instructions.
- Connect the storage to the old Galaxy. Insert the microSD card or connect the USB storage, using a suitable OTG adapter if needed.
- Open Smart Switch and create the backup. Choose its external-storage or SD-card option, select all, selected categories, or a custom selection as offered on your device, then start and complete the backup. The wording and icons may differ by model and software version.
- Restore on the destination Galaxy. Connect the storage to the new device, open Smart Switch, choose the option to restore from external storage, select the backup content, and complete the prompts.
- Check important data separately. Smart Switch does not save every item. Verify information that matters, especially app-specific data, calendars tied to synchronized accounts, and authentication or sign-in access.
Samsung’s Canada guidance notes that an SD card and OTG adapter may be purchased separately; accessories are optional, and compatibility must be checked for your device. See How to back up and restore data to external storage with Smart Switch.
What the external-storage backup may not include
Samsung Australia’s instructions apply to Australian variants and list calls and contacts, messages, apps, settings, home screen, images, videos, audio, and documents among the data that can be saved through its SD/USB workflow. The same page says the workflow cannot save drafts or failed messages, calendar events synchronized with an account, some restricted or incompatible apps—including Samsung Pay, Voice Recorder, Galaxy Wearable, and Calculator—or default and theme-store wallpapers. Exact support can vary, so check the instructions for your region and model. See Samsung Australia’s external-storage guide.

Transfer data directly to another Samsung device
Use Smart Switch when both devices are available and the goal is to move supported content to a new phone or tablet. Samsung documents wired and wireless transfer. A cable is useful for a direct connection; Samsung U.S. says wired transfer supports more data types, but both phones cannot be charged during the transfer. For a long transfer, Wi-Fi may be more convenient because the devices can remain on chargers.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Smart Switch on both devices and follow the prompts to identify the old device as the sender and the new one as the receiver.
- Choose cable or wireless connection, then select the content offered for transfer.
- Keep the devices connected and follow the on-screen instructions until the process finishes.
- Check the new device for important content and sign in to services or apps that require separate setup.
Transferable categories depend on the source device and operating system. Samsung says DRM-protected content cannot be transferred to Smart Switch in its Caribbean Smart Switch guide, last updated July 23, 2026. If you need a recoverable copy after the old device is wiped, traded in, or lost, create a separate backup rather than relying only on a direct transfer.

Back up or restore with Samsung Cloud
Samsung lists Samsung Cloud as a backup and restore option. In the Caribbean support guide, the backup path is Settings > Accounts and backup > Back up data. Select the data categories shown for your device and account, then tap Back up now. A linked account is required.
Menu names and available categories can vary. Check the options currently displayed on your device rather than assuming that every app, file, or setting is included. Samsung also lists Google One for backup and restore, but the precise data and account conditions should be confirmed in the service settings for your device.

Check coverage before you rely on a backup
- Look at the selected categories. Confirm that the items you care about are actually included in the Smart Switch selection or cloud service settings.
- Verify data held by other accounts. Calendar events synchronized from an account may not be part of a Smart Switch external-storage backup.
- Check important apps individually. Some apps may be restricted, incompatible, or require their own backup, export, or sign-in process.
- Confirm credentials and recovery access. A copy of device data does not necessarily preserve access to accounts, authentication methods, or service-specific content.
- Check the destination. Before erasing or handing over the old device, inspect the restored phone and confirm that essential data is present and usable.
Troubleshoot a backup or restore that will not start
USB storage is not recognized
Confirm the adapter and connector are compatible, reconnect the drive, and check that an external hard drive uses FAT or exFAT. If the drive requires separate power, provide it. If USB storage remains unavailable, use a supported computer backup or another compatible route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is not enough space
Use storage with enough free capacity for the categories selected. If necessary, choose fewer categories or use a larger compatible storage device; do not assume a partial selection includes everything you need.

A menu or option is missing
Smart Switch and Settings labels can vary by model, region, and software version. Check the relevant Samsung support page for your device and region, and use the options actually presented on the phone. A microSD option will not appear on a model without a supported slot.
Some data is missing after restore or transfer
Review Smart Switch’s exclusions, check account synchronization, and open individual apps to see whether data needs to be restored or authenticated separately. Protected content may not transfer. If the missing item was not included in the backup, the restore cannot recreate it from that backup alone.
