Short answer: Galaxy AI and Apple Intelligence both combine on-device processing with cloud-backed capabilities. Samsung exposes a “Process data only on device” control for Galaxy AI, while Apple says requests are handled on-device when possible or sent to Private Cloud Compute (PCC) when more capacity is needed. Neither company’s documentation proves an independent, overall privacy winner. The practical choice depends on your exact phone, software version, language, country, and the features you intend to use.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Samsung and Apple describe different privacy architectures, feature sets, and eligibility rules. Those descriptions are useful for choosing a device, but they are vendor statements rather than an independent security audit or a head-to-head performance test. No official source in this comparison supplies a neutral privacy score, speed result, adoption figure, or feature-quality ranking.
Evaluate four things together:
- Eligibility: the exact model and operating-system release, not just the product family.
- Use case: writing, summaries, translation, image editing, search, voice assistance, or accessibility.
- Availability: supported language, country, platform, and account configuration.
- Data path: whether the feature runs locally, uses a cloud service, or lets you restrict processing.

Privacy: where each system processes your data
Samsung’s hybrid model
Galaxy AI is not one uniform local-only system. Samsung’s support documentation distinguishes between features that can run on the phone and features that use processing outside it. It gives translations and Gallery Edit Suggestions as examples of on-device functions. The same documentation identifies auto-formatting, auto-summarizing, auto-correction, and image editing as cloud-based examples. The list is feature-specific, and Samsung warns that availability depends on the device and software.
Samsung also exposes a user control named “Process data only on device.” Enabling it disables cloud processing for Galaxy AI features that support the control. The exact menu location and available choices can differ by model and software release, so check the Galaxy AI settings on the phone you own. A local-only setting can improve data minimization, but it may also make some functions unavailable or reduce what the feature can do.

Samsung’s United States privacy notice gives concrete examples of information that may be processed outside the device. Depending on the function, this can include:
- Text you enter or select for Writing assist.
- Images, text, and recordings used by Note assist.
- Call and voice transcripts used by Transcript assist.
- Webpage content and browsing history used by Browsing assist.
These examples describe the kinds of inputs involved, not a claim that every Galaxy AI request sends all of those categories. The feature you activate determines the relevant data path, and Samsung notes that country and device availability can differ.
Samsung Mobile Press summarizes the control this way: “You can even choose how your personal information is processed, including the option to disable online processing for AI features.” That is a published company description, not independent verification of how every implementation behaves.
Apple’s on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute
Apple says Apple Intelligence first assesses whether a request can be handled on the device. If the request needs more capacity, Apple says it can use Private Cloud Compute. Apple describes PCC as a privacy-preserving service intended to process the request without retaining it for later access.
According to Apple’s published privacy features explanation, PCC data is used only to fulfill the request, is not stored, and is not accessible to Apple. Apple also says independent experts can inspect the server software. These are Apple’s stated commitments; the material available for this comparison does not independently validate them or compare PCC with Samsung’s cloud services.

Apple has also said that personal data and interactions are not used to train its foundation models unless the user explicitly opts in. That statement applies to Apple’s described policy and should not be treated as a general guarantee about every third-party app or service connected to an Apple device.
Apple’s own summary is: “When you make a request, Apple Intelligence analyzes whether it can be processed on the device or if it requires Private Cloud Compute.” The important practical distinction is that Apple presents routing as an automatic decision, whereas Samsung gives users an explicit device-only control for supported Galaxy AI functions.
Is Galaxy AI more private than Apple Intelligence?
The available documentation does not establish that either suite is categorically more private. Samsung offers a clear local-processing restriction, but some functions may stop working when cloud processing is disabled. Apple describes on-device processing plus PCC safeguards, but its architecture can still move eligible requests off the device when more capacity is required.
For a meaningful comparison, identify the exact feature and input. A translation request, a generated image, a call transcript, and a webpage summary can have different processing paths even on the same phone. Compare the controls available for that feature rather than assigning a single privacy label to the entire platform.
What Galaxy AI can do
Samsung presents Galaxy AI as a collection of functions integrated into Samsung apps rather than a single stand-alone assistant. Its support material covers phones and tablets and gives examples across Notes, Samsung Internet, Camera, and text features.

Translation and transcripts
Samsung identifies many translations as on-device examples. Transcript assist works with call and voice transcripts and is one of the functions for which Samsung’s United States privacy notice describes inputs processed outside the device.
Images, camera, and visual search
- Gallery Edit Suggestions: Samsung identifies these as an on-device example.
- Image editing: listed as a cloud-based example in Samsung’s support material.
- Circle-based search: Samsung describes circling content or images to find related information.
- Camera-related functions: Galaxy AI features are integrated into Samsung’s camera experience, although availability depends on the model and software.
What Apple Intelligence can do
Apple’s support documentation describes Apple Intelligence across Apple’s operating systems and apps. The feature list is broader than a single writing or chatbot function, but individual capabilities can be limited by device, language, region, and server capacity.
Writing, mail, and messages
- Writing Tools: Apple describes tools for rewriting, proofreading, and changing the tone or presentation of text.
- Summaries: Apple lists summaries for mail and messages.
- Shortcuts: Apple documents integration with Shortcuts for supported workflows.
Translation and communication
Apple lists translation in Messages, Phone, and FaceTime, with some translation capabilities available when using compatible AirPods. The exact language and regional availability is feature-specific.
Images and photos
- Image Playground: generates images from supported prompts and concepts.
- Genmoji: creates custom emoji-style images.
- Image Wand: turns eligible content into an image within supported workflows.
- Photo tools: Apple documents AI-assisted photo features, subject to the device and software requirements.
Siri and accessibility
Apple documents new Siri capabilities and Apple Intelligence features for accessibility. Apple’s June 8, 2026 announcement described a next generation of Apple Intelligence and a more capable Siri, but that announcement is a company claim about planned or delivered capabilities, not independent evidence of performance.
Device support: which Samsung phones and tablets qualify?
Samsung’s United States support guidance lists the Galaxy S26, S25, and S24 series, selected A-series models, newer foldables, and selected tablets as ready for Galaxy AI. Samsung also lists older models that require a software update. The exact feature set can vary even among devices carrying the Galaxy AI label.

This is United States guidance. A model sold in another country may have a different feature list, and Samsung’s “ready for Galaxy AI” designation does not guarantee that every Galaxy AI function is available on that device.
Device support: which Apple devices qualify?
Apple’s support documentation lists Apple Intelligence support for iPhone 15 Pro models and newer eligible iPhones. It also lists iPad mini models with the A17 Pro chip, iPads with M1 or later, Apple-silicon Macs, and Apple Vision Pro. Some Apple Watch capabilities require a compatible nearby iPhone.
| Apple platform | Eligibility described by Apple | Additional conditions |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone 15 Pro models and newer eligible iPhones. | Required operating system, device language, Siri language, region, and feature support. |
| iPad mini | iPad mini with A17 Pro. | Required operating system and supported language or region. |
| iPad | iPad models with M1 or later. | Required operating system and feature-specific availability. |
| Mac | Apple-silicon Macs. | Required operating system, language, and region. |
| Apple Vision Pro | Listed as an eligible platform. | Feature and regional restrictions can still apply. |
| Apple Watch | Some capabilities work with a compatible nearby iPhone. | Watch and iPhone compatibility, software, and feature requirements. |
Apple separately documents minimum operating-system versions, storage requirements, device and Siri language matching, region limits, and usage limits for some server-based functions. China mainland restrictions apply to some Apple Intelligence availability. Check Apple’s current support list before assuming that an eligible chip guarantees every feature.

Language matters as much as hardware
AI features are often introduced language by language. A phone can meet the hardware requirement while a writing, translation, or assistant feature remains unavailable in the language configured on the device. Apple specifically requires attention to device-language and Siri-language matching for supported features. Samsung also warns that availability varies by device and country.

Cloud-backed functions can be restricted by local law, account region, server capacity, or a country-specific rollout. Apple notes China mainland restrictions and daily limits for some server-based features. Samsung’s support and privacy material likewise cautions that functions may not be available in a particular country or on a particular device.

Software updates are part of eligibility
Support can arrive through an operating-system or manufacturer update. An older model may appear on a compatible list but still lack the required update in your market. Conversely, installing an update does not necessarily make every feature available; feature-level requirements still apply.
How to check your own phone before switching
- Record the exact model. Use the model number in Settings or About, not only a family name such as “S-series” or “iPhone 15.”
- Record the software version. Install the latest update offered for your region, then note the operating-system release.
- Choose the functions you actually need. Make a short list such as translation, note summaries, photo editing, Writing Tools, or Siri features.
- Check the manufacturer’s current support page. Confirm the exact model and each chosen feature separately.
- Check language and country. Verify that your device language, Siri language where applicable, account region, and physical location are supported.
- Review the data setting. On Galaxy AI, look for “Process data only on device” if local-only processing is important. On Apple devices, read the feature’s Apple Intelligence privacy explanation and determine whether the function can use PCC.
- Test after setup. Try the specific workflow with a non-sensitive sample before using private notes, calls, documents, or photos.
Common problems and how to fix them
| Symptom | Likely cause | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| A compatible phone shows no AI feature. | The required update, language, region, or account setting is missing. | Update the device, check supported languages and country rules, and recheck the exact feature. |
| A feature disappears after enabling local-only processing. | The function needs cloud processing. | Decide whether the feature is worth allowing online processing; if not, use an on-device alternative. |
| Only some features work on a supported model. | Eligibility is feature-specific rather than suite-wide. | Read the compatibility entry for the particular function instead of relying on the Galaxy AI or Apple Intelligence label. |
| Translation or writing assistance is unavailable. | The selected language is not supported or language settings do not match. | Check language requirements and use a supported configuration where appropriate. |
| Cloud features stop responding or show a limit. | A server-backed function may have usage or regional limits. | Wait for the limit to reset, verify service availability, or use a local function. |
| An older phone is listed but still cannot install the feature. | The manufacturer’s update has not reached that market or carrier. | Check the regional software rollout and avoid assuming that a US list applies everywhere. |
Do you need a new phone?
Not necessarily. If your current device appears on the manufacturer’s supported list, receives the required software, and offers the language and feature you want, an upgrade may add little value for this comparison alone. Verify the exact workflow before buying hardware.
A new device becomes a reasonable consideration when your current model is outside the supported list, lacks the required processor or software, cannot run your preferred language, or cannot provide the privacy control you require. Samsung’s current US guidance identifies the Galaxy S26 as ready for Galaxy AI, while Apple lists eligible iPhones beginning with iPhone 15 Pro models and newer supported iPhones. Those listings establish compatibility, not that either phone is the best overall purchase or that every reader needs to replace an existing device.
Which platform fits which priority?
| Your priority | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Maximum control over online processing | Galaxy AI’s “Process data only on device” option and which desired features remain usable with it enabled. |
| Automatic access to a larger cloud-backed model | Apple’s on-device/PCC routing and the privacy terms Apple publishes for PCC. |
| Samsung app integration | Notes, Samsung Internet, Camera, transcripts, and the exact Galaxy AI functions available on your model. |
| Writing and communication assistance | Apple Writing Tools, mail and message summaries, translation in supported apps, language support, and operating-system requirements. |
| Image creation and custom visuals | Apple’s Image Playground, Genmoji, Image Wand, and photo tools, subject to platform and regional limits. |
| Visual search and Samsung workflows | Galaxy AI features such as circling content or images to find related information, plus device-specific camera and Gallery functions. |
Bottom line: choose by feature and data path, not by the label
Galaxy AI is the better fit for someone who values Samsung’s integrated Notes, Internet, Camera, translation, and visual-search tools and wants an explicit device-only processing control where supported. Apple Intelligence is the better fit for someone already using Apple hardware who wants Writing Tools, communication summaries, image-generation features, Siri integration, and Apple’s on-device/PCC privacy model.
Neither conclusion makes one suite universally more private or more capable. Confirm your exact model, operating system, language, country, and desired feature, then decide whether the resulting data path matches your privacy expectations.
