Samsung Galaxy ad blocking vs. private DNS: which works better? The practical answer depends on where you want filtering. For ads you see in Samsung Browser (Samsung Internet), start with its built-in Ad blockers control. For hostname-level filtering that can extend beyond one browser, configure Android’s Private DNS with a filtering resolver. Neither method is a universal ad-removal switch: they operate at different layers, and Private DNS only affects domains the resolver can identify and block.

What each approach actually does

Samsung Browser’s Ad blockers feature

Samsung Browser has a dedicated Ad blockers area. Samsung describes these as apps that prevent ads from appearing while you browse. On supported Galaxy phones and tablets, you install a blocker from inside Samsung Browser and then turn it on or off with a switch. Samsung says some listed options are free and others cost money; the available list, pricing and compatibility can vary by region, browser version and device. See Samsung’s Ad blockers instructions before choosing an option.

This is a browser-layer control. The blocker can work with the pages Samsung Browser loads, using the browser’s request and page context. It is therefore the most direct choice when your complaint is ads, tracking requests or disruptive page elements encountered in Samsung Internet. It does not automatically configure every other app on the phone.

Android Private DNS

Private DNS is an Android system setting built around DNS over TLS. DNS translates a hostname such as a website’s domain into an address that an app can connect to; Android’s resolver sends DNS queries, receives answers and caches results. Android 9 and later include DNS over TLS support, and the Private DNS setting can use a provider hostname. The Android Enterprise Security Paper explains the platform feature, while the Android DNS Resolver documentation describes the resolver layer.

Private DNS is not, by itself, an ad-blocking database. A filtering result depends on the resolver you configure: if that service refuses to return an address for a domain on its blocklist, the connection may fail before the app reaches the ad server. If the resolver allows the domain, Private DNS has nothing to block. Because this happens during hostname resolution, it is not the same as removing an ad element from a page after it has loaded.

How to turn on an ad blocker in Samsung Browser

  1. Open Samsung Browser (also called Samsung Internet).
  2. Tap Tools, represented by the three vertical dots.
  3. Select Ad blockers.
  4. Choose a blocker from the list and install it when prompted.
  5. Return to the Ad blockers list and use the switch beside the installed option to enable or disable it.

Samsung’s US instructions confirm this path and note that additional blockers can be installed. They also warn that some choices may require payment. Do not assume that a blocker shown in a guide is still listed, free or compatible with your particular Galaxy model; check the list displayed on your device. The current support path is Samsung’s Ad blockers page.

Use the separate pop-up control

If the problem is a new window or tab opening over the page, enable Samsung’s dedicated pop-up setting:

  1. Open Samsung Internet.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Privacy dashboard.
  4. Turn on Block pop-ups.
  5. Return to the browser menu and open Ad blockers if you also want a general content blocker.

Samsung treats pop-up blocking and Ad blockers as related but separate controls. Turning on one does not prove that the other is active. Menu names and screen layouts can vary with Galaxy model and software version; Samsung’s pop-up guide is at Manage pop-up ads on your Galaxy phone.

Check what Samsung Browser reports

Samsung Browser’s privacy dashboard can show counts of blocked content such as ads and trackers. Use it as a browser-specific activity indicator: open the dashboard from Samsung Internet’s privacy settings and review the displayed counters. A counter on one device is not a published performance test and cannot be compared directly with a Private DNS provider’s logs or blocklist. Details are in Samsung’s browsing privacy-dashboard guide.

How to configure Private DNS on a Galaxy device

Before you start

  • Your phone or tablet needs an Android version that supports Private DNS; Android 9 and later support DNS over TLS.
  • You need the exact provider hostname supplied by the DNS service. A web address, IP address or VPN server name is not automatically a valid provider hostname.
  • Review the provider’s current filtering scope, privacy terms and reliability before entering it. No single provider is appropriate for every country, network or type of content.

Find the setting

Android exposes Private DNS in system network settings, but Samsung’s One UI labels and paths differ by model and software release. Open Settings and search for Private DNS; use the result if you do not see it under connections or network settings. Android’s platform documentation identifies a provider-hostname mode and explains the underlying DNS-over-TLS feature. For the technical background, see the Android Enterprise Security Paper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enter a filtering provider hostname

  1. Open the Private DNS page found through Settings search.
  2. Select the option that lets you specify a Private DNS provider hostname.
  3. Enter the hostname exactly as supplied by the provider; do not add https:// or a path unless the provider explicitly includes one.
  4. Save the setting.
  5. Reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, then test several ordinary sites and apps.

The exact labels may differ. Android also provides modes that turn Private DNS off or use an automatic setting; the provider-hostname mode is the one that lets a filtering service make the domain decisions. Android 10 added administrator controls, including the ability for managed devices to prevent users from changing DNS settings. On a work-managed Galaxy, an administrator policy can therefore override or hide the choice.

What Private DNS can and cannot block

Why it can affect more than one browser

When an app asks Android’s resolver for a hostname and the configured filtering resolver declines that domain, the app may be unable to reach that host. This can cover multiple apps that use the system resolver, which is why Private DNS can be useful when you want domain-level filtering beyond Samsung Browser. The Android resolver’s role and caching behavior are documented by the Android Open Source Project.

Why it does not remove every ad

  • Same-domain advertising: If an app serves ads and desired content from the same hostname, blocking that hostname can also break the content. A DNS filter cannot selectively remove only the ad element.
  • Unseen hostnames: DNS filtering can act only on names that reach the resolver. An app may use cached addresses, hard-coded endpoints or another resolution method.
  • Non-DNS traffic: Private DNS does not inspect page markup, images or video after a connection is established.
  • Resolver policy: A filtering service decides what to block. Changing the phone setting without choosing a filtering resolver does not create an ad blocklist.
  • App behavior: Apps that use their own DNS, an embedded tunnel or a managed network configuration may not follow the phone’s resolver in the same way as a standard app.

These are consequences of DNS operating at hostname resolution, not a measured promise that a particular percentage of ads will disappear. Do not treat Private DNS as a VPN, a full-device content filter, encrypted browsing for all traffic or a guarantee that in-app ads vanish.

Can Private DNS block ads in Samsung Internet?

It can block requests to ad or tracking domains when Samsung Internet asks the configured resolver for those names and the resolver’s policy blocks them. It will not replace Samsung Browser’s page-level controls. A browser blocker can make decisions in the context of a page; Private DNS sees hostname lookups. In practice, using both may address different requests, but the result depends on the particular site, blocker and DNS policy. There is no documented head-to-head block-rate measurement for Samsung Internet versus Private DNS.

  • Use Samsung Browser’s blocker for browser-specific filtering and page behavior.
  • Use Private DNS when you also want a resolver-level policy for compatible apps.
  • Keep Samsung’s Block pop-ups setting enabled if pop-up windows are the specific nuisance.
  • If a site or app stops working, identify which layer caused the failure before disabling everything.

Running both does not guarantee twice the filtering. They may block the same hostname, or a DNS block may prevent a browser blocker from ever seeing a request. The benefit is broader control, not a proven additive percentage.

Troubleshooting common failures

Ads still appear in Samsung Browser

  • Reopen Tools → Ad blockers and confirm the installed blocker’s switch is on.
  • Check whether the page is opening in another browser or an in-app web view.
  • Enable Settings → Privacy dashboard → Block pop-ups for window-based interruptions.
  • Remember that no documented blocker list is permanent; availability and compatibility can change by region and browser version.

Private DNS shows an error or connectivity stops

  • Recheck the provider hostname character by character. Remove spaces and any accidental URL scheme.
  • Temporarily switch to Android’s automatic Private DNS mode. If connectivity returns, the specified hostname or provider is the likely cause.
  • Test on both Wi-Fi and mobile data. A managed Wi-Fi network, captive portal or enterprise policy may handle DNS differently.
  • On a work-managed device, ask the administrator whether DNS settings are restricted; Android 10 supports such management controls.

An app works only when Private DNS is off

The app may depend on a hostname that the resolver blocks, use a resolution method outside the system path, or require a domain that the provider’s policy classifies incorrectly. Check the provider’s allow-list or troubleshooting procedure rather than assuming the Galaxy phone is defective. If the service is essential and there is no safe exception, return to automatic DNS and rely on browser-level controls where appropriate.

A website displays a blank area or missing media

A DNS block can prevent a content-delivery or advertising hostname from resolving even when the page itself is legitimate. Test with Private DNS temporarily set to automatic, then restore it after identifying the domain category involved. A browser blocker may offer finer page-level control for that site than DNS can provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy, security and performance considerations

DNS over TLS protects DNS queries between the device and the configured resolver from ordinary network observers, but it does not turn all browsing traffic into a VPN tunnel. The resolver can still receive the DNS questions it handles, so its retention and privacy policy matter. A filtering resolver also has policy power: it can block legitimate services or permit domains you would rather avoid.

Samsung’s privacy dashboard is useful for seeing what Samsung Browser reports as blocked on that device. It is not an independent audit, and the reviewed documentation supplies no controlled figures for page-load speed, battery consumption, data savings, ad-block percentage or cross-app coverage. Treat claims of a universal speed or battery improvement skeptically unless they identify a reproducible test, device, software version, network and blocklists.

A simple decision process

  1. Locate the nuisance. If it happens only in Samsung Browser, begin with Ad blockers. If it appears across several compatible apps, investigate Private DNS.
  2. Classify the behavior. A new window or tab points to Block pop-ups; an ad embedded in page content may need a browser blocker; a connection to a known unwanted domain may be suitable for DNS filtering.
  3. Check control and compatibility. Confirm the Galaxy model, One UI version, Android version, region and whether the phone is managed by an organization.
  4. Change one layer at a time. Enable the browser control first, test, then configure Private DNS and test again. This makes failures diagnosable.
  5. Keep an escape route. Know how to return Private DNS to automatic and how to switch a Samsung Browser blocker off if a site or app breaks.

Bottom line

For ads encountered while browsing in Samsung Browser, its dedicated Ad blockers feature is the most targeted and easiest place to start. For broader hostname-level filtering, Private DNS can extend beyond one browser when apps use the configured resolver and the chosen service blocks the relevant domains. Pop-up blocking is a separate Samsung Browser setting. Because the two controls work at different layers, neither is a verified universal winner, and neither guarantees that every ad in every app will disappear.
