Short answer: The Galaxy A37 5G is a modest but sensible upgrade. It starts with Android 16 instead of Android 15, raises water and dust protection from IP67 to IP68, and uses a newer regional chipset. Screen size and refresh rate, camera resolutions, battery capacity, dimensions and weight remain almost unchanged. Buy the A37 when its newer software starting point, higher ingress rating and longer remaining support matter more than the price gap. Consider an A36 only when a genuine, matching-condition unit is substantially cheaper.
This comparison uses Samsung’s US announcements and pricing references. Chipset, storage, colors, carrier availability and street prices can differ by country, so check the exact model number and current seller listing before paying.

Samsung’s US announcement says the A37 became available on April 9, 2026, while Samsung Global lists April 10 availability in selected markets. Those dates describe launch plans, not a promise that every retailer or country carries every configuration.

What changed from the Galaxy A36 to the A37?
Android 16 and a newer support starting point
The A37 launches with Android 16 and One UI 8.5 in Samsung’s global specifications, whereas the A36 launched with Android 15 and One UI 7.0. That difference is immediately visible in the software version and gives the A37 a later position within Samsung’s update window.

Samsung describes the policy as “up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades, along with up to six years of security updates.” The wording matters: “up to” means eligibility depends on the device, market and Samsung’s support policy, and update release dates can vary. Samsung measures the period from first global launch. Because the A37 launched later, it should have more time remaining than an A36 bought at the same moment, but it would be inaccurate to promise a specific final Android release without a model-specific schedule.
The A36 is not automatically unusable because it starts on Android 15. It remains a reasonable choice if its software is current enough for your apps and the discount is large. The practical question is how many years you expect to keep the phone: a buyer planning a long ownership period benefits more from the A37’s later starting point.
IP68 instead of IP67
Samsung rates the A37 IP68 and the A36 IP67. In Samsung’s A37 US note, the controlled test involved submersion in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. The A36 note specifies up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. The first digit indicates dust protection; the second reflects water-ingress testing under laboratory conditions.

Samsung advises against using both models at the beach or pool, where salt water, chlorinated water, sand and impact create risks that a freshwater laboratory test does not represent. Samsung also cautions that resistance can diminish over time. A damaged frame, worn seals, a drop or a repair can change the result. Treat IP68 as extra protection against an accident, not as permanent waterproofing.
A newer processor, but the chip depends on region
Samsung Indonesia identifies the A37 with an Exynos 1480 and describes it as more responsive for multitasking and AI than the A36. That is a vendor statement, not an independent benchmark. Samsung’s US A36 announcement names the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. The supplied US A37 material does not establish that the US phone uses Exynos 1480, so do not assume the Indonesian specification applies to a US retail unit.

Before comparing performance, open the seller’s full specification page or Samsung’s support page for the exact model number. A processor change can affect sustained performance, graphics, modem behavior, battery use and regional 5G bands, but the available official material does not provide a controlled A37-versus-A36 benchmark. If a listing omits the chip, treat that omission as a reason to verify rather than a reason to infer.
An improved image signal processor, not a proven camera overhaul
Samsung says the A37 has an improved image signal processor. Both US announcement tables list the same camera resolutions: a 50MP main camera, 8MP ultrawide, 5MP macro and 12MP front camera. Resolution alone does not determine image quality. Processing, lenses, stabilization, autofocus, HDR behavior and Samsung’s image tuning all matter.
There is no independent comparative camera test or score in the cited material. Therefore, the defensible conclusion is that the A37 may process images differently, but the specifications do not prove that its photos are categorically better in daylight, night scenes, portraits or video. If camera quality is your main reason to upgrade, inspect hands-on samples for the exact regional models rather than relying on the megapixel table.
What stayed the same?
6.7-inch 120Hz Super AMOLED display
Both phones use a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED panel with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Scrolling and compatible animations can appear smoother than on a 60Hz phone, while the FHD+ resolution keeps text and photos sharp at this size. Samsung’s published comparison does not establish a meaningful A37 advantage in brightness, calibration, touch sampling or glass protection, so those should not be treated as upgrades.
Because the physical size and listed display class are the same, an A36 owner will not gain a larger viewing area by moving to the A37. The change is primarily behind the screen—in software and processing—rather than in the basic panel specification.

Equal stated battery capacity
Each model lists a 5,000mAh typical battery. “Typical capacity” is a published capacity figure, not an endurance test and not a guarantee of identical battery life. Runtime changes with mobile signal, screen brightness, refresh-rate behavior, gaming, camera use, temperature and background apps. The A37’s newer processor and software could alter efficiency, but the supplied sources do not include a standardized battery comparison.

A37 US launch material mentions a 45W charger separately in broader A-series information; confirm that the exact A37 model you are buying supports the same charging rate and whether a compatible charger is included. Do not assume a charger in the box just because the phone supports fast charging.
Nearly identical body dimensions
Samsung’s US comparison tables list both phones at 162.9 × 78.2 × 7.4mm. The A37 is listed at 196g and the A36 at 195g. That 1g difference is not perceptible in normal use, and neither model is a smaller or lighter redesign. Existing A36 cases and screen protectors should not be assumed to fit: verify that an accessory listing names the exact model and cutout layout.
Price and availability: how to interpret the numbers
Samsung announced a US starting price of $449.99 for the A37 and said US availability began April 9, 2026. Samsung Electronics America’s MSRP file effective March 2026 lists an unlocked 128GB A36 at $399.99 and marks that SKU EOL. The two figures suggest a $50 historical difference, but they are not a live price comparison.
An MSRP is not the price you will necessarily pay today. Retailers may discount old stock, bundle storage, sell carrier-locked versions, or list refurbished and open-box units. An EOL designation means Samsung’s listed model is no longer an active product in that price file; it does not guarantee that every remaining unit is new, supported by the same warranty terms or available from an authorized seller.

Compare like with like before deciding:
- Match storage capacity and RAM, not just the model name.
- Check whether the phone is factory unlocked, carrier locked, refurbished or open box.
- Confirm the regional model number, 5G bands and warranty coverage.
- Include the cost of a compatible 45W charger if one is not supplied.
- Read the return window and inspect seller condition notes for an older A36.
For current offers, use Samsung’s product pages and reputable retailer listings rather than treating the launch MSRP or March 2026 file as today’s street price. The value decision can reverse if an A36 is heavily discounted or if an A37 promotion narrows the gap.

Choose the Galaxy A37 when these priorities fit
- You want the newest software starting point. Android 16 and One UI 8.5 start later than the A36’s Android 15 and One UI 7.0, which is useful if you plan to keep the phone for several years.
- You value extra protection from accidental water exposure. IP68’s 1.5-meter freshwater test is higher than the A36’s IP67 1-meter test, while still requiring sensible care.
- The current price gap is small. Paying close to the A36’s price for a newer model generally makes the A37 the lower-risk long-term purchase, provided storage and warranty are equal.
- You need a newer platform for multitasking or AI features. The A37’s processor differs by region, and Samsung describes an Exynos 1480 in Indonesia; verify the US chip before buying for performance reasons.
- You are buying new rather than clearing old inventory. The A37 is the active generation in Samsung’s 2026 launch material, while the A36 128GB US SKU is marked EOL in the March 2026 MSRP file.
Choose the Galaxy A36 when these priorities fit
- You find a substantially lower price on a genuine unit. A36 hardware still provides a 6.7-inch 120Hz Super AMOLED display, 5,000mAh typical battery and the same listed camera resolutions.
- Your usage is straightforward. Messaging, web browsing, streaming, navigation and ordinary photography do not automatically require the newest model.
- You are comfortable with IP67. It offers controlled freshwater protection up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, but you must observe the same beach, pool and long-term-seal cautions.
- You have confirmed the seller and warranty. Because the US MSRP file marks the 128GB model EOL, verify condition, activation status, return rights and software-support expectations.
- You prefer the exact regional chipset listed for the device. Samsung names Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 for the US A36. That does not make it universally faster or slower than every A37; it simply makes the regional specification clearer.
Upgrade advice for current A36 owners
An A36 owner should not upgrade solely for the display, battery capacity or camera resolution: Samsung lists those areas as essentially unchanged. The upgrade is most defensible when you specifically need the A37’s later software starting point, higher ingress rating or a newer regional platform, and your current phone’s resale value keeps the cost reasonable.
If your A36 is working well, receives the updates you need and has no water-seal or performance concerns, waiting for a larger discount or a later generation can deliver more noticeable hardware change. If the phone has been dropped, repaired or exposed to moisture, remember that its original IP67 rating may no longer describe its real protection.
Buying checklist before you place the order
- Identify the market. Confirm that the listing is for the country where you will use the phone. Samsung’s global, Indonesian and US specifications are not interchangeable.
- Record the exact model number. Use it to verify processor, storage, RAM, 5G bands, eSIM support and charger compatibility.
- Compare equal configurations. A 128GB A36 against a higher-capacity A37 is not a fair price comparison.
- Check condition and warranty. Ask whether the phone is new, refurbished, open box or carrier locked, and who handles warranty service.
- Verify the software version at delivery. The A37 should begin from its Android 16 generation; an older build may simply need updates, but confirm that updates are available for the exact model.
- Budget for charging accessories. Samsung says the A36 charger and cable are sold separately; confirm the A37 package contents instead of assuming they are included.
- Choose model-specific protection. Cases and screen protectors must state A37 or A36 compatibility and match the camera and port cutouts.
- Inspect an older A36 immediately. Check the frame, display, charging port, cameras and seals, then test the return process before the window closes.
Understanding the IP ratings in everyday use
IP ratings describe resistance to dust and water under a defined test, not a blanket durability guarantee. The A37’s IP68 test condition is up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes; the A36’s IP67 condition is up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. Neither statement covers salt water, chlorinated water, pressurized spray, hot water, dust impact, drops or chemical exposure.
If either phone gets wet, disconnect accessories, dry the exterior and follow Samsung’s care guidance before charging. Do not deliberately repeat the laboratory test at home. A phone that survives one incident can still develop corrosion or seal damage later, and Samsung explicitly warns that resistance may decrease with use.

Final buying decision
For most new US buyers, the Galaxy A37 5G is the safer long-term choice when its current price is close to an equivalent A36. It adds a later Android generation, Samsung’s higher IP68 rating and a newer platform without changing the familiar 6.7-inch 120Hz display, 5,000mAh battery or camera layout. The A36 becomes the better value only when its verified, same-condition price is meaningfully lower and you are comfortable giving up that newer starting point and IP68 margin.
