The best first changes on a new Samsung Galaxy A37 are not a universal preset. Finish the setup wizard, then review display, battery, security and privacy before tailoring notifications, sound, apps, storage, backup and location to the way you use the phone. Samsung identifies those areas as the main customization topics for Galaxy A-series phones.
Use the Settings app’s search field when a label is hard to find. Menu names and features can differ by country, carrier, Android/One UI release and model. Samsung’s current A37 manual listing is for Android 16, version 1.0, dated March 27, 2026; a Mexico support listing shows the English manual dated March 26, 2026. Check the manual that matches your phone before following a path word for word.
1. Finish the setup wizard deliberately
Do not rush through the first-run screens just to reach the home screen. Samsung’s A37 setup flow covers language, Wi‑Fi, Samsung and Google account sign-in, and lock-screen features. The sequence can change when you use Smart Switch for an easy transfer instead of setting the phone up manually.
- Choose language and region. Confirm the language, date format and regional options before restoring data. Region can affect which services and features appear later.
- Join a trusted Wi‑Fi network. A stable connection makes account sign-in and data transfer less likely to fail. If you are on a metered or public network, postpone a large restore until you have a connection you trust.
- Sign in to your accounts. Add the Samsung account and Google account you actually intend to use. They are separate accounts with separate recovery details, so verify the email addresses and recovery methods rather than creating duplicates.
- Choose a screen lock. Enable a lock-screen method during setup. Pick a method you can reliably use every day, then review its additional options in the Security and privacy area.
- Transfer only what you need. Smart Switch or another restore can bring over applications, messages and settings. Review the selection instead of importing every old app; a clean start makes later troubleshooting easier.
- Install system updates when offered. The available update and restart screens depend on the software installed on your device. Keep the phone connected to power if an update is large or the battery is low.

2. Check your exact software before changing anything
Open Settings and search for “software information,” “manual,” or the setting you want to change. Note the Android and One UI versions, model number and carrier software. The A37 support pages warn that availability varies by region or country, operating-system and One UI version, device model and carrier. Samsung also notes that some intelligence features require a Samsung account.
Use the manual for your specific build rather than assuming that an instruction written for another A37 is identical. Samsung lists an Android 16 User Manual, version 1.0, on its regional product page, while its Mexico support page lists an English Android 16 manual with a March 26, 2026 date: regional manual and downloads and Mexico product support.
3. Make the first display decisions
Display settings affect legibility, comfort and how the phone behaves in your hand. Samsung lists display and wallpaper among the areas owners can customize. There is no single correct configuration, so make these choices according to your eyes, lighting and accessibility needs.

Choose a comfortable brightness routine
Open Settings, select Display, and inspect the brightness controls. If your software offers adaptive or automatic brightness, decide whether you want the phone to respond to changing light or whether you prefer manual control. Test the screen indoors and outdoors before deciding. A brightness setting that looks comfortable in a dark room can be difficult to read outside.
Review screen timeout and lock behavior
In Display, look for the screen-timeout control. Select a period long enough to read without repeatedly touching the screen, but not so long that the display remains on when you put the phone down. Then check the related lock-screen options so the timeout and lock behavior match your security expectations.
Set text, zoom and color for your eyes
Use Display and Accessibility search results to review font size, screen zoom, contrast and any eye-comfort or color options available on your build. Increase one setting at a time, then check messages, maps and web pages. A larger font may improve readability while reducing how much content fits on screen; a color filter can help some users but may make photos and color-coded information harder to interpret.
Pick wallpaper and lock-screen information
Samsung also identifies wallpaper and lock-screen customization. Choose a wallpaper that keeps icons readable, and decide which information may appear while the phone is locked. Avoid displaying sensitive message previews or other private details where someone nearby could read them.

4. Review battery and charging controls without chasing promises
Battery care is a Samsung-recommended review area, not a guarantee of a particular runtime improvement. The useful first step is to understand what your phone is set to do and which trade-offs you accept.
Inspect battery usage
Open Settings and search for Battery or Battery usage. Look at the applications and services using power over a normal day. Do not uninstall or restrict an app solely because it appears in the list; messaging, navigation, media and backup apps can be active because you asked them to be.
Review power-saving behavior
Find the power-saving controls and read the explanation shown on your device before enabling them. Power-saving modes can change background activity, performance, connectivity or notifications. Enable one when you need its trade-offs, such as during travel, rather than assuming it is the best permanent setting for every user.

Check charging and battery-protection options
If your build includes battery-protection or charging-limit choices, read the on-screen description and select the option that fits your charging routine. A limit can conflict with a day when you need maximum charge, while unrestricted charging may better suit a phone that is frequently away from a charger. The exact choices are software-version and region dependent.

Samsung explicitly calls out security and privacy as customization areas. Treat this as a review of controls, not a claim that one toggle makes the phone invulnerable.
Strengthen the lock screen you will actually use
In Settings, search for Screen lock or Lock screen. Confirm the method selected during setup, review automatic-lock timing, and decide what can be accessed from the lock screen. A complex method that you regularly bypass is less useful in practice than a strong method you use consistently.
Audit permissions
Search Settings for Permission manager or App permissions. Review camera, microphone, location, contacts, phone and files/media access. Keep access for apps that need it for a feature you use; remove or limit access that no longer matches the app’s purpose. Recheck after installing a new app because permissions are granted individually.
Review privacy controls and account security
Open the Security and privacy section and read each available category, including device protection, account security and privacy controls. Turn on account recovery methods you can maintain, and record the credentials in a secure password manager or another protected method. If an option is not present, do not substitute a setting from a different Galaxy model; consult the manual for your build.
Decide whether Secure Folder fits your use
Samsung lists Secure Folder among its customization and help topics. If you need a separate protected space for selected files or apps, search Settings for Secure Folder and follow the on-screen setup. It is an optional organizational and privacy feature, not a requirement for ordinary phone use.
6. Tame notifications and sound before they become noise
Samsung’s setup guidance also points owners to sound and notification customization. Start with the apps that interrupt you most rather than disabling everything at once.
Set basic sound behavior
Search Settings for Sounds and vibration. Check media, call, notification and alarm volume separately, then choose a ringtone and notification sound that you can distinguish. Test vibration and mute behavior in a quiet place so you know what the phone will do during meetings, travel or sleep.
Control notification categories
Open Notifications and inspect an app’s categories or notification types. Keep alerts that represent an action you need; silence or minimize categories that are purely promotional or repetitive. Decide whether notification content should appear on the lock screen, especially if other people may see the display.
Use Do Not Disturb intentionally
Search for Do not disturb and review schedules, exceptions and repeat-caller behavior if available. Build a schedule around your real routine, then test it with a trusted contact before relying on it for sleep or work. Availability and labels can vary by software version.

7. Review apps, defaults and installation sources
Samsung lists apps and app installation among the areas owners may customize. The goal is to make the phone predictable without removing software you may later need.
Remove clutter carefully
Open Settings, choose Apps, and inspect the list. Uninstall apps you recognize and do not use. For system components, prefer the available disable, uninstall-updates or notification controls only when the phone explains the consequence; deleting a component can affect another feature.
Set default applications
In Apps, search for Choose default apps. Select the browser, phone, messaging, assistant or other defaults you genuinely prefer. Test a web link, phone number and shared file afterward so you know which application opens each type.

Look for the control governing installation from unknown sources. Leave it restricted unless you have a specific, trusted reason to install an application outside the normal store. If you temporarily allow an installer, return to the setting afterward and remove that permission.
Review digital-assistant access
Samsung includes the digital assistant in its customization topics. Search Settings for assistant settings and check wake-word, microphone, lock-screen and personalization choices. Enable only the hands-free behavior you want, and understand what remains available while the phone is locked.
8. Organize storage before it becomes urgent
Samsung’s guidance includes file and storage management. Open Settings and search for Storage to see how space is divided among applications, images, video, audio and documents.
Find large or duplicate content
Review large videos, offline downloads and old installation files first. Delete only items you can identify, and empty any trash or recycle area if your file manager uses one. If a category is unclear, open it through the file manager rather than deleting the entire category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGive the camera and messaging apps a plan
Decide where photos, videos and received files should live. A simple folder structure makes later backup and transfer easier. If you use removable storage or a cloud service, confirm the destination and available capacity before changing the camera or download behavior.

Samsung points users toward Samsung Cloud sync and backup, while Google accounts provide separate backup and restore controls. These services are not interchangeable, and the items they cover can differ by account and region.
Review what each account syncs
Search Settings for Accounts and backup. Open the Samsung and Google sections separately and inspect the categories offered for synchronization or backup. Enable only the data you want associated with each account, and check the account name before approving a change.

Test recovery instead of assuming it
Confirm that you know both account passwords and that recovery contact details are current. A backup is useful only if you can sign in and restore it when the phone is lost, reset or replaced. Do not erase the old device until the new A37 displays the data you expected.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →10. Decide how location should work
Samsung includes locating a misplaced phone among its setup and help topics. Search Settings for Location and review the main switch, app-level permissions and any device-finding service shown on your build.
Keep location available for functions you rely on, such as navigation or finding the phone, and choose the least broad permission that still supports the app. For apps that offer “only while using” or a similar choice, test the feature after changing it. Location labels and available services can vary by country, carrier and software version.
11. Optional accessibility and camera checks
Samsung’s customization topics also include camera and accessibility-related controls. These are personal settings, not mandatory first-day changes.
Make accessibility easy to reach
Search Settings for Accessibility and review visibility, hearing, interaction and dexterity options that apply to you or another regular user. Turn on one feature at a time and learn how to switch it back off. If you share the phone, explain any changes that alter gestures, magnification or spoken feedback.
Configure camera behavior for your routine
Open the Camera app’s settings and read the descriptions for resolution, storage location, grid or composition aids and video options available on your device. Choose settings based on whether you prioritize quick sharing, editing flexibility or storage space. The options can differ from another A37 software build, so use the labels shown on your phone.
A practical first-day checklist
- Complete language, Wi‑Fi, Samsung account, Google account and lock-screen setup.
- Record the Android, One UI, model and carrier versions.
- Adjust brightness, timeout, text size, wallpaper and lock-screen previews.
- Inspect battery usage, power-saving behavior and any charging-protection choices.
- Confirm the screen lock, permissions, privacy controls and account recovery methods.
- Set sound, vibration, notification categories and Do Not Disturb exceptions.
- Remove unused apps, choose defaults and review installation-source permissions.
- Check storage categories, large files and download locations.
- Verify Samsung and Google backup or sync selections and test account sign-in.
- Review location permissions and the available phone-finding option.
What to do when a setting is missing
First, type the feature name into Settings search using a shorter term, such as “lock,” “backup,” “location” or “battery.” Next, check whether the phone has installed a different One UI or carrier build than the guide you are reading. Then consult the A37 manual that matches your region and model. If the option still does not appear, treat it as unavailable on that build rather than forcing a workaround from another Galaxy phone.
When a change causes an unexpected result, return to the same Settings search result and restore the previous value. For app problems, review that app’s permissions and notification categories before changing system-wide settings. For account or backup problems, verify which Samsung or Google account is signed in and whether the phone has a stable internet connection.
Bottom line for a new Galaxy A37
Start with the setup wizard and a verified lock screen. Then work through display, battery, security and privacy—the four areas Samsung specifically highlights—before making optional changes to sound, notifications, apps, storage, backup, accessibility, camera and location. Treat every menu path as version-sensitive, read the explanation beside each switch, and choose settings that match your own convenience, privacy, accessibility and battery priorities.
