The Galaxy A36 5G has the stronger spec sheet for display smoothness, wired charging and camera hardware, while the Galaxy A17 5G offers a similar-sized AMOLED display and the same stated battery capacity. Which is the better buy depends on the current price of equivalent configurations in your country; the available price references are from different markets and dates, so they do not establish a universal price gap.

Where the A36 has an advantage
Smoother display refresh
PhoneArena lists the A36 at up to 120Hz, compared with Samsung UK’s maximum 90Hz specification for the A17. A higher refresh rate can make scrolling and supported animations look smoother, though it does not by itself establish overall display quality or how long the battery will last.

PhoneArena lists wired charging of up to 45W for the A36 and up to 25W for the A17. These are maximum rated capabilities, not measured charging times; actual results depend on factors such as the charger, cable, battery condition and usage. Confirm charger compatibility and what is included in the package in your market.

More varied rear-camera hardware
The A36’s listed rear-camera set includes an 8MP ultrawide camera and a 5MP macro camera alongside its 50MP main camera. Samsung UK’s A17 specification lists a 50MP, 5MP and 2MP rear-camera combination. That gives the A36 more clearly specified ultrawide and macro options in this comparison, but megapixel counts alone cannot tell you which phone takes better photographs.
Different listed processors
PhoneArena lists the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 in the A36 and the Exynos 1330 in the A17. This points to different hardware platforms, but the cited comparison does not provide independent benchmark results or real-world testing that would quantify a performance difference.

Where the A17 remains competitive
Samsung UK specifies the A17 with a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED screen, while PhoneArena reports the same 6.7-inch display size for the A36. Both phones are also listed with 5,000mAh batteries. Those shared headline figures mean the A17 is not a smaller-screen or lower-capacity-battery alternative on these specifications, although they do not establish equal battery life.
The A17’s front camera is listed at 13MP, compared with 12MP for the A36 in PhoneArena’s comparison. A small difference in megapixels is not evidence of better selfie quality, so consider sample photos and camera features that matter to you rather than choosing on this number alone.

What is the price difference?
There is no reliable universal price difference to quote without a country, date, seller and matching RAM/storage variants. The available references are not like-for-like current prices:
- PhoneArena’s comparison, updated in February 2026, reports a $399 starting price for the A36 and a price around €239 for the A17. These are different currencies and markets, not a direct price comparison.
- Samsung Malaysia’s 2025 launch terms listed the A36 6GB/128GB version at an RM1,499 recommended retail price, with a time-limited promotional price of RM1,299. Those are historical Malaysia-specific figures, not current pricing.
For a useful comparison, check listings in your market on the same day and match storage, RAM, seller, warranty and condition. A discounted A36 could be closer in price to an A17 than launch-era references suggest; current listings are needed to know.

Software support: what Samsung says about the A17
Samsung UK says the A17 receives six OS upgrades and six years of security support. This is Samsung’s stated commitment, not an independent guarantee of update timing for every buyer; delivery can depend on the model variant, country and carrier. Samsung’s update record for model SM-A176B lists an Android 16 security update released September 29, 2026, with the September 5, 2026 security patch level. That record applies to that model code and release, not automatically to every A17 variant.
Which should you buy?
Choose the A36 if its local premium is reasonable
- You want the higher listed 120Hz refresh rate.
- You value the A36’s 45W maximum wired-charging capability.
- You want the listed ultrawide and macro rear-camera options.
- The processor and its potential capabilities matter, and the exact regional A36 model matches the listing you are considering.
Consider the A17 if it costs meaningfully less
- You want a 6.7-inch AMOLED display and 5,000mAh stated battery capacity without paying extra for the A36’s listed hardware differences.
- You are comfortable with a maximum 90Hz refresh rate and 25W wired charging.
- Samsung’s stated six OS upgrades and six years of security support are relevant to your purchase, subject to regional and carrier variation.
Compare the actual offers for the same configuration before deciding. If the A36 costs only a little more in your market, its faster refresh and charging specifications and additional camera options may justify the premium; if the A17 is substantially cheaper, it retains the shared screen-size and battery-capacity headline specs.
