Choose the Galaxy A54 5G if camera quality, selfies, or a more compact phone are your priorities. Choose the Galaxy A34 5G if you want the larger display and the lower launch price. The two models share the features that matter most for long-term ownership: a 5,000mAh typical battery, 120Hz FHD+ Super AMOLED screens, microSD expansion up to 1TB, IP67 water and dust resistance, and Samsung’s promise of up to four generations of Android OS upgrades plus five years of security updates.

The A54’s camera hardware and smaller dimensions justify its higher position in the range. The A34 is not a cut-down experience in everyday basics, however; it gives you a bigger screen and the same stated durability and software-support policy for less money at launch.

Which phone should you buy?

Buy the Galaxy A54 5G when cameras and handling matter most

The A54 is the better fit if you regularly take photos, use the front camera, or prefer a phone that occupies less space in a pocket or hand. Its 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide and 32MP front camera all have higher listed resolutions than the A34’s corresponding units. The A54 is also 3.1mm shorter and 1.4mm narrower, which can make reaching across the display easier even though it is 3g heavier.

  • Equipped with a 6.4″ Super AMOLED display that supports a smooth 120 Hz refresh rate and offers up to 1,000 nits of peak brightness, the Galaxy A54 5G delivers vibrant visuals, rich contrast, and excellent readability even in bright outdoor conditions.

Buy the Galaxy A34 5G when screen size and price matter most

The A34 gives you a 6.6-inch panel instead of the A54’s 6.4-inch panel. That extra area is useful for reading, maps, split-screen work and video. At launch in the UK it also cost £100 less in the comparable 128GB and 256GB configurations. If you do not need the A54’s camera hardware, the A34 preserves the same 120Hz AMOLED display class, battery capacity, IP67 rating, microSD support and stated update policy.

Do not choose based on software support or water resistance

Samsung’s published commitment is the same for both phones: up to four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates. Samsung’s regional announcement also lists IP67 protection for both. Those criteria do not separate the models.

Display and everyday handling

Both screens use the same core technology

Each phone has an FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Vision Booster. A 120Hz panel can make scrolling and supported animations look smoother than a conventional 60Hz screen, while AMOLED technology provides the high-contrast look many people prefer for video and photographs. Because the stated display technology and refresh rate are shared, you are not paying the A54 premium for a different screen class.

The A34 is larger; the A54 is more compact

The A34’s 6.6-inch diagonal gives it 0.2 inch more screen than the A54. That difference is visible when reading long pages or watching video, but it also contributes to the A34’s 161.3mm height and 78.1mm width. The A54 measures 158.2mm by 76.7mm. Both are 8.2mm thick.

The A34 is actually lighter at 199g, while the smaller A54 weighs 202g. Therefore “compact” does not mean “lighter” here: the A54 reduces the footprint, but it is 3g heavier. Try both in the hand if one-handed use or prolonged reading is important to you.

Handling question Better fit Reason
I want the most content on screen. Galaxy A34 Its 6.6-inch display is larger.
I have smaller hands or pockets. Galaxy A54 It is shorter and narrower.
I want the lowest weight. Galaxy A34 199g versus 202g.
I want a 120Hz AMOLED display. Either Both list FHD+ Super AMOLED, 120Hz and Vision Booster.

Camera comparison: where the A54 leads

Main camera

The A54 uses a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS). The A34 uses a 48MP main camera, also with OIS. The two phones therefore share the stabilisation feature, which can help reduce blur from small hand movements, but the A54 has the higher listed resolution and sits above the A34 in Samsung’s camera specification.

  • GSM Unlocked: GSM unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket, Metro, etc.)
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charger and charging cable that may be generic.
  • Display: 6.4" Screen, 104.9 cm2 (~80.2% screen-to-body ratio) 1080 x 2408 pixels, 20:9 ratio (~400 ppi density)

  • Octa-core (2x2.6 GHz Cortex-A78 & 6x2.0 GHz Cortex-A55) Mali-G68 MC4 | 5,000mAh battery

Resolution alone does not guarantee better photographs in every situation. Lighting, processing, subject movement and the camera app’s choices all affect the result. Still, when your buying decision is based on the hardware Samsung lists, the A54 is the safer choice for the main camera.

Ultrawide and macro cameras

The A54’s ultrawide camera is 12MP, compared with 8MP on the A34. That gives the A54 more listed resolution for landscapes, architecture and group shots when you need a wider field of view. Both phones include a 5MP macro camera. Macro cameras are intended for close subjects; they are a secondary tool rather than a replacement for the main camera.

Selfies and video calls

The front-camera gap is larger: 32MP on the A54 versus 13MP on the A34. If you take frequent selfies, record yourself for social posts, or make video calls in which front-camera detail matters, the A54’s specification gives it a clear advantage.

Camera Galaxy A54 5G Galaxy A34 5G Advantage
Main 50MP with OIS 48MP with OIS A54 on listed resolution; both have OIS.
Ultrawide 12MP 8MP A54.
Macro 5MP 5MP Neither.
Front 32MP 13MP A54.

If your photos are mostly casual snapshots in good light and you rarely use the front camera, the A34 can still be sufficient. You are mainly giving up camera headroom, not the ability to take ordinary pictures.

Battery life and charging expectations

Capacity is identical

Samsung rates both phones at 5,000mAh typical battery capacity. That means the A34 does not have a larger battery despite its larger screen, and the A54 does not have a smaller battery because of its compact body.

Why equal capacity does not guarantee equal runtime

Battery endurance is affected by mobile-network conditions, signal strength, screen brightness, refresh-rate behavior, camera use, gaming, streaming and background activity. Samsung specifically notes that actual battery life varies with network, usage and other factors. The A34’s larger display may draw more power in some situations, while individual software settings and usage patterns can outweigh that difference. There is no evidence here for declaring one model a universal battery-life winner.

Choose based on capacity parity: both start with the same 5,000mAh rating. If your priority is maximum runtime, compare your own screen brightness, app mix and network coverage rather than assuming the A34 automatically lasts longer or the A54 automatically lasts shorter.

Storage and memory choices

Both support microSD expansion up to 1TB

Each model accepts an optional microSD card with capacity up to 1TB. This is useful if you keep large photo libraries, offline video, music or downloaded maps on the phone. A card can also reduce pressure on internal storage when applications and system files grow over time.

How the launch configurations differ

In the UK launch lineup, the A54 was offered with 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. The A34 launched with 6GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB options. The 256GB versions therefore match on the listed RAM amount, while the entry A34 has 2GB less RAM than the entry A54.

Galaxy A34 5G 6GB RAM, 128GB storage £349
Galaxy A34 5G 8GB RAM, 256GB storage £399

The £100 launch difference applies when comparing 128GB with 128GB (£449 versus £349) or 256GB with 256GB (£499 versus £399). These were Samsung’s UK recommended retail prices in 2023, not guaranteed current prices. Regional configurations can differ, so verify the exact RAM, storage, seller and warranty before ordering.

Durability: the same stated protection

Samsung’s regional announcement gives both phones an IP67 rating. The stated test condition is immersion in fresh water up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes, along with dust protection under the IP rating. That is useful protection against accidental splashes and brief submersion, but it is not a reason to deliberately use either phone underwater.

Samsung’s India announcement also describes both models as having Gorilla Glass 5 protection and combines that with the IP67 rating and four Android OS updates in its “worry-free user experience” statement. Glass protection is not the same as being shatterproof: a case and screen protector remain sensible if you want to reduce damage from drops and scratches.

Software support and long-term ownership

Both models receive the same published support commitment: up to four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates. “Up to” is important. It describes the maximum stated policy, while the exact timing of an update can vary by region, carrier and rollout stage.

Because the policy is shared, software longevity should not decide between the A34 and A54. Instead, consider which hardware you will still appreciate after several years. A buyer who takes many photos may value the A54’s camera advantage throughout the support period; a reader who wants a large display may prefer the A34 for the same reason.

Price: measure the premium against what you use

At UK launch in 2023, the A54 started at £449 for 8GB/128GB and reached £499 for 8GB/256GB. The A34 started at £349 for 6GB/128GB and £399 for 8GB/256GB. That made the A34 £100 cheaper at equivalent storage capacities.

The A54 premium buys the higher-listed camera specifications and a smaller body, not a larger battery, faster stated display or longer stated software support. Conversely, the A34 discount does not remove the 120Hz FHD+ Super AMOLED screen, microSD expansion, IP67 protection or the four-generation/five-year support policy.

For a current purchase, compare today’s prices rather than applying the original £100 gap automatically. Check whether a listing is new, refurbished or carrier supplied; confirm the storage and RAM; and make sure the warranty applies to your country.

Decision guide by type of buyer

For photography and social media

Choose the A54. Its 50MP OIS main camera, 12MP ultrawide and 32MP selfie camera all lead the A34’s listed resolutions. The advantage is most relevant if you use the ultrawide and front cameras often, rather than only taking occasional snapshots.

For reading, video and maps

Choose the A34 if the 6.6-inch screen is more valuable to you than the A54’s camera hardware. The 0.2-inch diagonal difference is modest on paper but useful when text, timelines or map labels are on screen for long periods.

For one-handed use

Choose the A54. Its 158.2mm height and 76.7mm width are smaller than the A34’s 161.3mm by 78.1mm. Remember that the A54 still weighs 202g, so it is not the lighter device.

For maximum value at launch-equivalent pricing

Choose the A34 when you can spend the £100 difference more productively elsewhere and do not need the A54’s cameras. At the original UK prices, the A34 delivered the same stated battery capacity, display class, storage expansion, durability rating and support policy for less.

For long-term storage needs

Either model works because both support microSD cards up to 1TB. Select the internal-storage configuration that fits your budget, then add a card only if you need more room; verify that the card’s specification and capacity are compatible before purchase.

What to check before ordering

  1. Confirm the model and region. Listings may use similar names while offering different regional configurations. Check that it is the Galaxy A34 5G or Galaxy A54 5G intended for your country.
  2. Match storage and RAM. The launch A34 had both 6GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB versions; the listed A54 UK versions had 8GB of RAM with 128GB or 256GB storage.
  3. Compare the actual current price. The £349, £399, £449 and £499 figures are 2023 UK launch RRPs. They do not establish today’s price or stock.
  4. Check warranty and seller status. Confirm who provides the warranty, especially for imported or refurbished phones.
  5. Budget for the right accessories. Cases and screen protectors are model-specific because the dimensions differ. Label any accessory for A34 or A54 before buying.
  6. Decide whether you need a microSD card. Both phones support cards up to 1TB, but the card is optional; choose its capacity and speed for your own photo, video and offline-download workload.

Common buying mistakes

Assuming the A34 automatically has better battery life

Both batteries are rated at 5,000mAh typical, and Samsung says actual life varies with network and use. The larger A34 display does not prove longer endurance. Treat battery life as usage-dependent.

Paying the A54 premium for support updates

The published support policy is the same for both phones. Pay extra for the A54’s cameras or smaller footprint, not for a longer stated update window.

Comparing unlike storage versions

A £100 difference is meaningful only when storage and region match. Compare 128GB with 128GB or 256GB with 256GB, then account for RAM and seller warranty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying a case for the wrong model

The phones are close in thickness but differ in height and width. A case designed for one will not be a reliable fit for the other; select accessories by exact model.

Final recommendation

The Galaxy A54 5G is the better all-round choice for buyers who value camera capability, selfies and a narrower, shorter body. The Galaxy A34 5G is the smarter value choice when a larger 6.6-inch display and lower price matter more than camera resolution. Since both share the 5,000mAh battery rating, 120Hz AMOLED display class, microSD support, IP67 protection and the same stated software-support policy, your decision should come down to those two real differences: camera and handling versus screen size and cost.
