To restart a responsive Samsung Galaxy A12, open its power menu, tap Restart, and confirm if prompted. If the phone is frozen, press and hold Volume down + Side/Power together until it restarts. A restart does not erase your data; a factory data reset does.
How do I restart my Samsung Galaxy A12 when the screen works?
- Open the power menu. You can access it through Quick Settings, or press the Volume down and Side/Power buttons together to bring up power options, as described in Samsung’s general Galaxy instructions: Different ways to restart your Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Tap Restart.
- Confirm the restart if the phone asks. Wait for the A12 to turn off and start again.
Menu names and button behavior can vary by software version and model. If these steps do not match your phone, use the manual for your exact A12 variant and software edition from Samsung’s Galaxy A12 (A127) support page.
How do I force restart a frozen Samsung Galaxy A12?
- Press and hold Volume down and Side/Power at the same time.
- Keep holding until the screen goes black and the phone begins restarting; release when the Samsung logo appears.
Samsung Singapore specifies holding the two keys for more than 7 seconds; another Samsung guide describes holding until the device turns off and back on. The exact hold time can vary, so use the restart beginning—not a guaranteed timer—as your cue to release. See Samsung’s frozen-device guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy restart instructions.

| Phone state | Touchscreen needed? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Screen responds | Yes | Open the power menu and choose Restart. |
| Screen is frozen or does not respond | No | Hold Volume down + Side/Power together until the phone restarts. |
Is restarting the same as a factory reset?
No. Restarting cycles the phone off and on; it is not meant to remove your personal data. A factory data reset is a separate action that erases personal information, settings, and other data. Do not choose a factory reset to perform an ordinary restart.

If troubleshooting leads you to consider a factory reset, back up important data first and make sure you know the account credentials needed to set up the phone afterward. Samsung UK says a factory reset “should only be used as a last resort.” See Samsung UK’s factory-reset guidance and Samsung Gulf’s reset and backup guidance.
