A Samsung Galaxy front camera that freezes, shows a blank preview, or displays “Camera Failed” does not automatically mean the camera hardware is broken. Samsung says these camera symptoms are more likely to be software-related, though that general guidance cannot diagnose an individual phone. Start with a restart, then check the Camera app, updates, and downloaded-app interference before arranging service.
Why might a Samsung front camera stop working?
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance for Galaxy cameras—not a front-camera-specific fault analysis—lists temporary Camera app errors or corrupted data, low storage, operating-system conflicts or bugs, and a malfunctioning camera sensor as possible causes. These are possibilities, not a measured ranking. A blank preview, frozen image, launch failure, or “Camera Failed” message alone cannot establish which cause applies.
Notice whether the problem affects only the front camera, whether it occurs in Samsung’s Camera app and other camera-using apps, and whether it started after an update, new app installation, impact, or liquid exposure. These details can help support staff investigate, but another app’s result does not conclusively prove a hardware fault. Work through lower-risk checks before considering a factory reset. Menu names and availability vary by Galaxy model and software version; Samsung’s camera troubleshooting instructions provide model-dependent guidance.

- Restart the phone. This can clear a temporary system or Camera app error. After it restarts, open Camera and switch to the front camera to check whether the preview returns.
- Reset Camera app settings or clear its app data. Clearing Camera app data resets camera settings; Samsung says it does not delete saved photos or videos. It is not a factory reset. The exact route to app storage controls varies by software version, so use the equivalent Camera app settings on your device.
- Check for updates. Look for an update to the Camera app and install any available Galaxy software update. Labels and update availability vary by device and version.
- Test in Safe Mode. Safe Mode disables downloaded apps. If the camera works there, a recently downloaded app is a likely source of interference. Remove recent apps one at a time, restarting normally and retesting after each removal.
- Run Samsung Members diagnostics, if available. In Samsung Members, open Support → Phone diagnostics → Camera on a supported device with the app installed. The result can help with escalation; Samsung does not say that this test identifies a specific part to replace.
Samsung US Support states: “If the issues do not appear while in Safe mode, the problem is caused by a downloaded app, and it should be uninstalled.” Treat improvement in Safe Mode as a useful clue, then isolate recent apps rather than assuming which one is responsible.
When should you consider a factory reset?
Samsung presents a factory data reset as a later troubleshooting step, after lower-risk checks. It erases data, so back up anything important before proceeding. Do not confuse this with clearing Camera app data: the latter resets Camera settings without deleting saved photos and videos. A factory reset may not be a permanent fix if an app issue returns.

When is professional service the right next step?
If the front camera remains unavailable after restarting, checking Camera app data and updates, testing Safe Mode, and running diagnostics where supported, contact Samsung support or arrange service. Samsung says persistent camera problems may need professional inspection of the camera module or internal circuitry. Record the Galaxy model and exact error message, and tell the technician whether the fault is limited to the front camera and when it began.
Do not order a replacement module or open the phone based on the symptom alone. Camera parts and repair procedures are model-specific, and Samsung’s repair guide for the Galaxy A55 applies to model SM-A556B rather than establishing compatibility with other Galaxy phones. Samsung’s camera troubleshooting page describes service escalation when troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.
