To reset most Samsung refrigerator ice makers, remove the ice bucket if needed, then press and hold the built-in rectangular Test button until you hear a chime or see the ice maker move. The button is not a universal control-panel key combination: its position and the steps for reaching it vary by model. If the test does not respond, check the ice maker’s power, temperature, bucket, and water supply before trying again.
Find the Test button for your ice-maker design
Samsung uses different ice-maker layouts, including freezer-door, top-freezer, bottom-freezer, refrigerator-compartment or side-by-side, and dual cubed/Ice Bites designs. The Test button is generally a rectangular button on the ice maker itself; depending on the configuration, it may be on the bottom/front or underneath the unit. Some designs require removing the ice bucket, and some older freezer-door models may have a cover to remove first.
Start with the manual for your exact refrigerator model if the layout does not match what you see. Samsung’s US support pages provide configuration-specific instructions for freezer-door, top-freezer, and cubed/Ice Bites ice makers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReset the ice maker safely
- Make room to work. Remove the ice bucket or cover only as needed to expose the Test button. Keep the bucket nearby for reinstalling. If the tray already contains water or ice, do not repeatedly run the test: repeated attempts can overflow the tray or jam the mechanism.
- Press and hold Test. Hold the button until the ice maker chimes or visibly moves. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance says the button may need to be held for up to 10 seconds.
- Wait for the cycle to finish. The test duration depends on the ice-maker location. Samsung describes a cycle of about six minutes for a refrigerator-compartment ice maker and about 30 seconds for a freezer-compartment unit. Do not press Test repeatedly while a cycle is underway.
- Restore the bucket and cover. Seat the bucket correctly; some designs click into place. For the freezer-door design in Samsung’s guide, if the bucket will not seat, turn its rear gear handle 90 degrees and try again.
A chime or visible movement indicates that the test has started; a further chime may signal completion. If the unit gives no chime and shows no movement, turn the refrigerator off by unplugging it or switching off its circuit breaker for two minutes, restore power, and try the test once more. If it remains unresponsive, contact Samsung support rather than repeating the test.

Check these conditions if ice production does not resume
Freezer temperature
Samsung’s US guidance says the freezer needs to be at 0°F or colder to produce ice. If it is warmer, address the temperature or cooling problem first; resetting the ice maker will not correct inadequate cooling.
Ice maker setting and bucket
- Confirm that the ice maker is switched on. Controls vary by model: some Family Hub refrigerators use Fridge Manager, while some SmartThings-capable models can be controlled through SmartThings.
- Make sure the bucket is fully seated and the freezer door closes properly. Keep the bucket clear of objects other than ice that could cause the maker to detect it as full.
Water supply and filter
If the test runs but water does not enter the ice maker, check the household water supply and pressure. Samsung’s US no-ice guidance specifies a minimum of 20 psi in the conditions it describes. For a refrigerator with a water dispenser, that guide also suggests checking whether it dispenses 6 ounces (3/4 cup) in less than 10 seconds.

If water flow improves when the filter is removed, Samsung says low pressure or an old filter may be responsible. Replace an old filter with one compatible with your exact refrigerator model; Samsung recommends Samsung-brand filters. Filter replacement is relevant when the flow check points to a filter or pressure issue, not as a routine part of resetting the ice maker.
How long to wait after a successful reset
Do not assume that a successful test means the bucket will fill immediately. Samsung Support UK’s guidance, updated 3 August 2026, says ice production may take up to 24 hours to resume after a reset. That is UK support guidance, not a guaranteed recovery time for every refrigerator model or market. Samsung’s UK page also gives typical output as 10–12 cubes every 45–60 minutes and around 120 cubes per day, while noting that production varies with temperature, use, and ice-maker type; these figures are not guaranteed for every unit.

When to stop troubleshooting and request service
Request service if the Test button remains unresponsive after the two-minute power cycle, or if faults or repeated chimes continue. Do not force a stuck or frozen bucket, use a hair dryer, or try to defrost the ice maker manually. Use the Samsung Support Center for the next step.
