If your Samsung fridge freezer is not making ice, first check whether the ice bucket is empty or whether ice is present but will not dispense. For an empty bucket, verify the ice maker is on, the bucket is seated, the freezer is cold enough for your model, and water can reach the refrigerator. Controls, temperatures, reset procedures, and recovery times vary by model and market, so find the full model code and follow its matching manual.
First, tell an ice-making problem from a dispensing problem
Look inside the ice bucket. If it is empty, use the production checks below. If it contains ice, the maker may be working and the fault may be in the dispenser instead.
- For ice that will not dispense, check Child Lock or Dispenser Lock, look for fused or clumped ice and a blocked opening, and confirm the bucket is fully seated.
- If the dispenser motor sounds as though it is running but no ice comes out, the bucket may not be engaged correctly. Samsung notes that the motor can sound as if it is operating when the bucket is not fully in place. Samsung’s dispenser troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
Check the ice maker controls and bucket
Make sure the ice maker is enabled and the bucket is correctly fitted. The control depends on the model: some refrigerators show an Ice Off indicator, some top-freezer models show Ice On, and connected models may provide controls through Fridge Manager or SmartThings. Use the manual for your exact model code rather than guessing at a button sequence. Samsung’s ice-maker troubleshooting guide describes these model-dependent controls.
Remove anything obstructing the bucket and reseat it until it is properly latched. A bucket that is misaligned or not fully installed can interfere with operation; an overfull bucket can also affect what happens next.

Check freezer temperature, airflow, and door closure
The ice maker needs suitable freezing conditions and airflow. Check the temperature specified in the manual for your model, keep food from blocking vents, and avoid repeatedly opening the door while the appliance cools. Make sure the doors close fully and the ice-maker area seals as designed. Frost around the freezer or bucket is a reason to investigate the seal or airflow rather than assume the ice maker itself has failed.
Samsung’s regional support guidance does not establish one universal temperature setting for all models. Follow the model-specific recommendation in the manual or the support guidance for your region. Samsung UK’s ice-production guidance is distinct from its US troubleshooting instructions.
Check the water supply before resetting anything
A closed supply valve, kinked or leaking line, low pressure, or restricted filter can interrupt filling or result in small cubes. Check that the household valve is fully open and the refrigerator’s water line is connected, unkinked, and not leaking.

If your model has a water dispenser, Samsung’s US troubleshooting page suggests checking whether it dispenses 6 ounces (three-quarters of a cup) in less than 10 seconds. That is a water-dispenser flow check, not an ice-production measurement.
Samsung gives a separate pressure instruction for a specific case: if the ice-maker test did not deliver water after a water-line adjustment, confirm the supply is at least 20 psi before continuing. Samsung recommends using a plumber for that supply-side check. This threshold is not a diagnosis for every ice-making failure. A reverse-osmosis system can also reduce pressure, according to Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance.
Consider the water filter when symptoms point to low flow
A restricted or overdue filter can reduce water flow, so it is worth checking when the dispenser is slow, the test cycle does not fill, or cubes are small or shattered. Samsung US rates its filters for 300 gallons—approximately six months of use in an average household. That is the manufacturer’s stated filter rating, not a guarantee that every household filter lasts exactly six months.

Samsung US describes comparing operation with the filter removed under the conditions in its troubleshooting procedure. If removing the filter restores production, replace it with one approved for your exact refrigerator model. Regional instructions and compatibility can differ; check the matching manual and Samsung’s local guidance before buying. Do not assume a filter will fix a control, temperature, or mechanical problem.

Use the Test button only as directed for your model
A test or reset is a model-specific diagnostic step, not the first check for every refrigerator. Find the procedure and button location in the manual for your full model code. Ice makers in different locations can have different access methods and test durations.
For the freezer-door procedure described by Samsung US, remove the bucket or cover to locate the Test button, then hold it until you hear a chime. If there is no chime and no movement, Samsung instructs users of that procedure to power-cycle the refrigerator for two minutes and try again. Reinstall the bucket until it clicks. Do not repeatedly press Test: Samsung warns that water may overflow or ice may jam if the tray is already filled. Allow time for production, then decide whether to call for service
Recovery time depends on the model and what you did. After the checks in its US troubleshooting procedure, Samsung says production should begin within three hours, while normal amounts can take up to 24 hours. These are manufacturer guidance for that procedure, not a guarantee for every model or repair. Samsung UK provides separate installation and first-use timings, so do not combine the regional figures into a universal expectation.
If the correct test procedure still produces no response after the documented power cycle, or ice does not return after the appropriate recovery period, arrange Samsung service or qualified appliance repair. A symptom alone does not identify a failed valve, sensor, or ice-maker assembly; avoid replacing parts based on a guess.

What Samsung’s production figures mean
Samsung US gives model-dependent examples: its support page says refrigerator-compartment ice makers produce a tray every 45–65 minutes and freezer-compartment makers every 85 minutes. It defines a tray as eight cubes for a full-size refrigerator and six for a counter-depth refrigerator. These are manufacturer examples, not a promise for every model.
Samsung UK reports approximately 120 cubes per day for refrigerators fitted with Samsung ice makers, under its own guidance and conditions. That figure is not directly comparable to the US tray examples, and neither should be treated as a universal production benchmark.
