For ordinary files, connect your Samsung Galaxy to the PC with a data-capable USB cable, unlock the phone, choose Transferring files/Android Auto in the phone’s USB notification, then copy files using File Explorer. Use Bluetooth to send a few selected files wirelessly, or Smart Switch when you need a structured backup of supported data rather than a folder of individually readable files.
Transfer files with a USB cable and File Explorer
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the Windows PC with a USB cable that supports data transfer. A cable that only charges the phone will not make its storage browseable.
- Unlock the phone. If a prompt asks Allow access to phone data?, tap Allow. The prompt may not appear on every connection.
- Swipe down from the top of the phone’s screen, tap the USB connection notification, and select Transferring files/Android Auto. Some software versions use a label such as USB for file transfer and then show another USB options screen.
- On the PC, open File Explorer and select the phone under This PC or in the sidebar. Open Internal storage.
- Browse to the files you need, select them, and copy or drag them into a folder on the PC. To copy files the other way, drag them from the PC into a suitable phone folder, such as Download, Documents, or Music.
- Wait until the copy finishes and close active copy windows before unplugging the cable.
Samsung’s USB instructions are available in its Australian Galaxy-to-Windows guide and U.S. file-transfer guide. Samsung cautions that options can vary by model, region, and software version.
Find photos, downloads, and documents
- Camera photos and videos: Start at Internal storage > DCIM > Camera.
- Downloaded files: Check the Download folder.
- Documents: Check Documents, but note that some apps save files in their own folders.
- SD card files: Browse the card’s storage location rather than Internal storage.
If a photo is not in Camera, open it in the phone’s Gallery app, swipe up, and check the displayed Path. Follow that location in File Explorer.

| Method | Best for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| USB and File Explorer | Copying individual files or folders directly | Lets you browse phone storage after enabling file-transfer mode. |
| Bluetooth | Sending selected files without a cable | Sends chosen files wirelessly after pairing; the documented Samsung workflow covers photos, and PC steps may vary. |
| Smart Switch for Windows or Mac | Backing up supported data categories or restoring a Samsung backup | Creates or restores a structured backup; it does not make every backed-up item readable as a normal PC file. |
The official instructions do not establish comparative transfer speeds or a universal maximum file size, so choose based on whether you need direct file access, a wireless send, or a backup.

- USB-C to C Cable for up to 25W Charging Speeds
- Get it in black or white to suit your style and device
Send selected files with Bluetooth
- Pair the Galaxy phone and PC over Bluetooth.
- On Windows, choose the option to Receive files in the Bluetooth file-transfer flow.
- On the phone, select the file, tap Share, choose Bluetooth, then select the PC.
- Accept the incoming transfer on Windows if prompted, and wait for it to complete.
Samsung’s UK photo-transfer guide documents this workflow. Bluetooth menu names and PC steps can differ.
Back up supported data with Smart Switch
Smart Switch is for a supported-data backup or restore, not simply browsing the phone’s folders. Samsung lists categories that can include contacts, calendar, messages, photos and videos, music, documents, apps, and some Galaxy-only settings or app data. Supported items depend on the device; certain synced or private app data may be excluded. Messages stored in a backup cannot be read on the PC as ordinary files.

Requirements and backup steps

- Connect the phone to the computer and tap Allow on the phone if prompted.
- Open Smart Switch on the computer and select Backup.
- Choose the data categories to include, then start the backup.
- Check the destination shown in the installed version of Smart Switch. Samsung documents different default backup locations for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Mac.
See Samsung’s Smart Switch for Windows or Mac guide for supported content and setup details.
Troubleshoot a phone that does not appear in File Explorer
The phone charges but its files do not appear
- Confirm the cable supports data transfer; charging alone does not prove it can transfer files.
- Try another USB port and connect directly to the PC rather than through a hub.
- Unlock the phone, allow access to phone data if prompted, and select the file-transfer USB mode.
Samsung’s Australian guide, updated October 7, 2026, specifically applies to Australian-variant Galaxy devices and advises testing another cable or connecting directly to a PC USB port when the phone charges but files do not appear.

The phone still does not connect for data transfer
Samsung advises disconnecting the phone and restarting it. If the issue continues, use Smart Switch’s additional functions to reinstall the device driver, then reconnect. The exact screens may vary. Samsung’s Smart Switch transfer troubleshooting guide covers connection problems.

Why USB file-transfer mode matters
A USB connection can charge a Galaxy without exposing its files to Windows. The phone must be unlocked and set to a file-transfer mode before File Explorer can browse its storage. Labels and menus are not identical across every Galaxy model or software release; Samsung’s connection options guide also notes that available options vary.
