Foreign investors held 46.38% of Samsung Electronics shares on October 8, 2026, according to Korea Exchange data cited by MoneyToday and Seoul Economic Daily. Both reports compare that reading with 46.35% on January 11, 2008, during the global financial crisis. ChosunBiz gives a different historical comparison, so the precise “lowest since” claim is disputed.

What the latest figures show

MoneyToday and Seoul Economic Daily reported that foreign ownership of Samsung Electronics was 46.38% on October 8, 2026. MoneyToday also reported a 46.37% reading for October 7, 2026. These are daily ownership ratios: the share of the company’s stock held by foreign investors on the stated date, not the amount foreigners bought or sold during a period. MoneyToday and Seoul Economic Daily attribute their figures to Korea Exchange data.

Why the historical comparison is disputed

MoneyToday and Seoul Economic Daily say the October 8, 2026, level was close to 46.35% on January 11, 2008. ChosunBiz instead says the October 7, 2026, level was the lowest since 46.45% on July 16, 2009. Its English-language article also contains an internal date inconsistency: it is dated October 11, 2026, but says the Korea Exchange reported the data on “Nov. 11.” The English page notes that it was translated by AI. The sources do not explain the differing historical baselines, so the January 2008 comparison is supported by two same-day reports, while the precise record claim should be treated as unresolved. How to read the ownership numbers

Daily figures and quarter-end figures are different measures

Samsung Electronics’ official shareholder-structure page lists foreign ownership at the end of the second quarter of 2026 as 46% for common shares and 73% for preferred shares. Those company figures are rounded and refer to quarter-end; they are not a replacement for the more precise daily October readings. Samsung Electronics shareholder structure

Samsung has common and preferred shares, plus London-listed GDRs

On the Korea Exchange, Samsung Electronics common shares trade under 005930 and preferred shares under 005935. Its London-listed global depositary receipts are SMSN for common shares and SMSEL for preferred shares. Keep the share class and listing venue in mind when comparing figures; an ownership percentage for common shares is not interchangeable with one for preferred shares. Why foreign ownership has fallen

MoneyToday reports that foreign ownership reached a year-to-date high of 52.40% on January 6, 2026, then dropped below 50% in March after the U.S.-Iran conflict began. It remained lower even as the KOSPI rose. This chronology does not establish that the conflict alone caused the decline: ownership can change for multiple reasons, and the reports do not demonstrate a single cause. MoneyToday

A lower ownership ratio and net foreign selling are related but distinct. The ratio measures foreign investors’ share of outstanding stock at a point in time; net buying or selling measures trading over a selected period. A flow figure needs its own time range and source and should not be presented as though it were the ownership percentage.
