Samsung DeX turns a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet into a desktop-like workspace on an external display; selected Galaxy tablets can also run DeX on their own screen. It is useful for combining mobile apps on a larger display, but it does not make every Galaxy device or app behave like a PC. Compatibility depends on the device, software, connection and app.
What you need to use Samsung DeX
For a wired setup, connect a compatible Galaxy device to a monitor, TV or projector through a suitable HDMI connection, such as a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable. Samsung also documents DeX Pad and DeX Station setups for supported devices. For wireless DeX, both the Galaxy device and the display must support the required connection, including Miracast-capable display support. Not every smart TV is guaranteed to work. A keyboard and mouse are optional: Samsung documents wired and Bluetooth input options, as well as using the Galaxy device as a touchpad and on-screen keyboard. Touch or S Pen input is available in some setups. Check the exact model and mode before buying an adapter or relying on a particular display connection.
9 useful ways to use Samsung DeX
1. Keep several apps open in separate windows
Put a browser beside notes and email or messaging to move between references and your work without constantly switching apps. DeX supports resizable windows and multi-window use, but individual apps may resize well, stay fixed-size or be unsupported. Samsung’s app behavior documentation explains those differences.

2. Reply to messages or handle calls while you work
On supported devices and modes, you can use the Galaxy device alongside the DeX environment. That can help you answer a message or handle a call without closing the apps open on the external display. The exact behavior depends on the device and mode; Samsung describes simultaneous device and DeX use in its DeX overview.
3. Use a keyboard and mouse for typing-heavy tasks
Writing, entering information or navigating several windows can be more comfortable with external controls than with the phone’s touchscreen. Connect a compatible wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. DeX still runs mobile apps, however: an external keyboard does not turn them into desktop editions or guarantee PC-style features.
4. Make a compatible tablet your standalone workspace
Selected Galaxy tablets support DeX on the tablet itself, so you can use a desktop-style layout without connecting an external display. Samsung’s workspace controls let you organize windows for the task at hand. Availability depends on the exact tablet model; check Samsung’s workspace guidance and device support information.

5. Show slides or other content on a larger screen
A compatible monitor or TV can display your DeX workspace for a presentation or shared viewing. Samsung’s developer documentation lists HDMI-connected monitors, TVs and projectors as display examples. For an event, verify both the Galaxy device’s compatibility and the display’s connection before relying on it.
6. Use the phone as a touchpad or on-screen keyboard
If you do not have a mouse or keyboard with you, Samsung documents using the phone to control DeX as a touchpad and to enter text with an on-screen keyboard. This is a handy travel option, though a physical keyboard is generally a more practical choice for extended typing. Check the available controls for your device and connection in Samsung’s setup instructions.
7. Create a temporary wireless station
Wireless DeX can be useful when a compatible TV, Samsung Smart Monitor or other Miracast-capable display is available but no HDMI route is convenient. It avoids a display cable, but success depends on support from both devices, and wireless performance may vary. Confirm compatibility before you count on it; Samsung outlines requirements on its support page.

8. Arrange windows around a specific task
Move and organize windows so that the apps you need for a task are visible together—for example, notes beside a reference page. Samsung’s workspace instructions explain how to manage workspaces and move windows in DeX. The controls and availability depend on the supported device and mode; see Manage workspaces in Samsung DeX mode.
9. View mobile apps and content on a larger display
DeX can make supported mobile apps and their content easier to see on a monitor or TV, whether you are consulting reference material or viewing media. This is still app-dependent: support, layout and playback behavior vary, so do not assume every app fills the display or works like its desktop counterpart. Wired HDMI is a straightforward choice when you have a compatible adapter or cable and a display input available. Wireless avoids that cable but requires a compatible Galaxy device and Miracast-capable display. An external monitor may suit a desk; an existing TV can serve as a temporary larger screen. For long typing sessions, a keyboard and mouse may be more comfortable; for portability, the phone’s touchpad and on-screen keyboard reduce what you need to carry.

If you already have a compatible Galaxy device, display and input accessories, you may be able to try DeX without buying anything. Check compatibility for the exact device and connection before purchasing an adapter.
Check DeX eligibility before choosing a setup
External-display DeX, standalone tablet DeX and DeX for PC are different use cases, with different device requirements. In its US support information, Samsung says DeX for PC is not supported on Galaxy S25/S26 series, Z Fold7 and later named models, and other models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later; it points users in those cases to Link to Windows. Samsung’s compatibility details can change, so check the current DeX FAQ for your exact model and software rather than assuming DeX for PC is available.
