Neither mode is universally better. Samsung DeX is the more display-centered choice when you want a Galaxy phone or tablet to drive a monitor or TV by cable or Miracast. Motorola Smart Connect is compelling when your main goal is a Mobile desktop session alongside a paired PC. The deciding factors are your exact handset, wired-versus-wireless needs, PC workflow, app compatibility and preferred input devices.

What Samsung DeX and Motorola Smart Connect actually do

Both features turn a compatible phone into a larger, desktop-style workspace. Instead of viewing one mobile app at a time on the handset, you use resizable windows, a taskbar and pointer-based controls on an external display or computer. The phone remains the source of the apps and data; the large screen is an extended working environment rather than a separate desktop operating system.

Samsung DeX

DeX is built into compatible Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets. Samsung documents two display routes: a wired connection from the device to a monitor or TV, and a wireless connection to a supported Samsung TV, Smart Monitor or other Miracast-capable display. Selected Galaxy tablets and the Z TriFold can also run DeX in a standalone tablet mode, without an external screen.

DeX has a separate PC feature. A phone can appear in a DeX window on a compatible computer, but Samsung says DeX for PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later. That restriction does not remove display-based DeX; it affects the PC-window workflow only. Samsung directs affected users toward Link to Windows instead.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Motorola Smart Connect

Smart Connect’s Mobile desktop presents phone apps in a desktop format on a compatible display or paired PC. Motorola separates support into wired display, wireless display and PC categories, and a phone can support one category without supporting the others. The compatibility chart for the exact handset is therefore more important than the Smart Connect name on the box.

Motorola also documents taskbar actions and physical-keyboard shortcuts. Some applications are not designed for an external display and can be used only on the phone. Smart Connect can change the Mobile desktop window’s orientation and resolution when the connected workflow allows it.

Compatibility comes before the cable

The most common mistake is buying a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter and assuming that any recent phone will produce video. An adapter can carry a signal only when the handset supports the required display mode. A phone may support wireless display but not wired output, or a paired-PC session but not an external monitor.

Check the exact handset and software

  • Record the complete model name, not just the product family. Different variants can have different display and PC capabilities.
  • Check the manufacturer’s current support list or compatibility chart for the connection you intend to use: wired display, wireless display or PC.
  • Confirm the installed Android and interface versions. Samsung’s Android 15/One UI 7 restriction applies specifically to DeX for PC, not automatically to wired or wireless display DeX.
  • Check regional and carrier variants if the support page distinguishes them. Compatibility lists can change as software updates are released.

Check the display or computer

  • For a wired setup, the monitor or TV needs a compatible HDMI input and the phone needs a supported video-output path.
  • For wireless DeX, the display must be a supported Samsung TV, Smart Monitor or other Miracast-capable device, and the Galaxy model must be on Samsung’s wireless-support list.
  • For Smart Connect wireless display, verify that both the phone and display satisfy Motorola’s wireless requirements; ordinary Bluetooth pairing is not a substitute for wireless video support.
  • For a PC session, install or open the relevant Smart Connect or DeX software and verify that the phone model is listed for PC use.

How the display connections differ

Wired HDMI: predictable when the phone supports it

A wired connection generally gives the most direct path from phone to monitor. On a supported Galaxy device, Samsung documents a DeX/HDMI cable or adapter. On Motorola, wired display is model-specific, so the compatibility chart must say that the handset supports it before you buy an adapter.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Wired video avoids the discovery and wireless-network variables of Miracast. It does, however, add a cable, may require a powered hub or charger for long sessions, and can leave the phone’s USB-C port occupied. None of those accessories creates video output on a handset that lacks the feature.

Wireless display: fewer cables, more dependencies

Wireless DeX sends the desktop to a compatible Samsung TV, Smart Monitor or Miracast-capable display. The phone and display must both support the relevant wireless mode, and the display must be discoverable. Motorola offers a comparable wireless-display route only for models marked as compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wireless is convenient for presentations or occasional use, but the experience depends on the display’s implementation and the radio environment. If a wireless display does not appear, first verify support on both ends rather than repeatedly restarting the phone.

PC workflows are not the same as monitor workflows

Samsung DeX for PC

DeX for PC places the phone’s DeX environment in a window on a computer. It is useful when you want phone apps beside desktop applications without switching the monitor’s input. Samsung’s current documentation excludes phones running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later from this feature. A compatible Galaxy can still use display-based DeX even when DeX for PC is unavailable.

If your Galaxy has the software combination covered by that restriction, use a monitor or TV connection for DeX and consider Link to Windows for phone access on a PC. Do not infer that a failed DeX-for-PC pairing means the handset cannot drive an external display.

Motorola Smart Connect on a paired PC

Motorola’s documented flow is centered on pairing the phone and computer, opening Smart Connect on either device, selecting the paired device, choosing Mobile desktop and starting the session. PC support is handset-specific, so complete those checks before treating Smart Connect as a universal desktop mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Within Mobile desktop, Motorola documents changing the window’s orientation and resolution. That is useful when a laptop-sized window, portrait display or presentation layout needs a different shape than the default.

Workspace, controls and app behavior

Windowed work is the point of both modes

Desktop mode is most useful for tasks that benefit from several visible windows: drafting in one app while consulting another, handling files with a pointer, or presenting phone content on a large screen. The exact taskbar icons, window controls and supported actions depend on the phone and software version.

Keyboard, mouse and touchpad choices

Both manufacturers document keyboard and pointer input. A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse are optional, compact additions when the phone is being used as a workstation. Samsung also documents using the Galaxy phone as a touchpad, which lets you begin a DeX session without carrying a separate mouse. Motorola documents physical-keyboard shortcuts and taskbar actions for Mobile desktop.

A touchscreen monitor is not required for either mode. If you use a TV, a keyboard and mouse or the phone-as-touchpad option are usually more practical than trying to navigate every window from the handset screen.

Do not assume every app scales well

Desktop mode changes the surrounding interface; it does not rewrite an app for a large screen. Some apps open in a phone-shaped window, restrict resizing or refuse to appear on the external display. Motorola explicitly identifies apps incompatible with external displays as phone-only. DeX users should apply the same caution: test the specific apps that matter to your workflow instead of judging compatibility from the launcher alone.

Set up Samsung DeX on a monitor or TV

Wired setup

  1. Confirm that the exact Galaxy phone or tablet supports wired DeX and that the monitor or TV has a suitable HDMI input.
  2. Connect the DeX/HDMI cable or a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter to the Galaxy device, then connect HDMI to the display.
  3. Switch the display to the HDMI input used by the phone.
  4. Accept the DeX prompt on the Galaxy device if one appears. The external screen should load the DeX desktop.
  5. Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, connect USB input through a compatible hub, or enable the phone’s touchpad option if you want to control the pointer from the handset.
  6. Open the apps you need and adjust their windows. If no image appears, disconnect the adapter and recheck model support, cable direction, power and the selected HDMI input before changing software settings.

Wireless setup

  1. Verify that the Galaxy model supports wireless DeX and that the TV or monitor is a supported Samsung display or Miracast-capable device.
  2. Put the display into its screen-mirroring or wireless-display discovery mode.
  3. On the Galaxy phone or tablet, open the quick settings panel and choose the DeX or wireless-display control shown for that model.
  4. Select the target display and approve the connection on the TV or monitor if prompted.
  5. Connect a keyboard and mouse or use the phone as a touchpad. Keep the display and phone within a reliable wireless range.

Menu names can vary by Galaxy generation and One UI release. If the DeX control is absent, return to the model and software support check rather than assuming the feature was removed from every Galaxy device.

Set up Motorola Smart Connect Mobile desktop

Paired-PC workflow

  1. Confirm in Motorola’s compatibility chart that the handset supports Smart Connect PC use. If you need a monitor by cable, separately confirm wired-display support; PC support does not imply HDMI output.
  2. Pair the phone with the computer using the connection method Smart Connect presents for that model.
  3. Open Smart Connect on the phone or PC.
  4. Select the paired device in Smart Connect.
  5. Choose Mobile desktop and start the session.
  6. Connect a physical keyboard and mouse if needed, then use the taskbar and documented keyboard shortcuts to switch apps and manage the desktop.
  7. Open Mobile desktop’s display controls to change orientation or resolution when the window does not fit the computer or external screen.

External-display workflow

For a monitor or TV, follow the connection path listed for the exact Motorola handset. A model marked for wired display can use the supported USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter; a model marked only for wireless display needs a compatible wireless receiver or display. If the chart does not list the desired connection, do not treat an adapter, dock or new cable as a workaround.

Which mode fits common situations?

Your priority More suitable starting point Why
Galaxy phone already owned; occasional TV or monitor use Samsung DeX Samsung documents both wired and wireless display routes on supported models, plus a phone-as-touchpad option.
Motorola phone used mainly with a paired computer Smart Connect Mobile desktop is designed around the paired-PC workflow, with orientation and resolution controls.
Lowest wireless uncertainty Whichever exact handset supports wired display A cable avoids Miracast discovery, but only a compatible phone can output video.

Typing-heavy work without a mouse DeX on a supported Galaxy, or Smart Connect with a physical keyboard DeX can use the phone as a touchpad; Smart Connect documents keyboard shortcuts and taskbar controls.
Apps that must fill a large screen Test the apps on the exact phone before committing Desktop shells cannot force an app that is incompatible with external displays to behave like a desktop app.

Accessories that genuinely help

USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter

Buy one only after the handset’s wired-display entry is confirmed. It is relevant to supported Galaxy DeX devices and Motorola models that explicitly support wired display. Check whether the adapter requires external power and whether your monitor accepts the resulting HDMI signal. An adapter cannot add video output to a phone whose USB-C port lacks that capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluetooth keyboard and mouse

These are optional controls for both ecosystems. They make window management and text entry easier than tapping on the phone. A compact set is useful when the phone moves between a desk, a meeting room and a living-room display. Samsung users can start with the phone’s touchpad mode if they want to avoid a mouse.

Miracast-capable display

A compatible Miracast TV, monitor or receiver is relevant to wireless DeX and supported Motorola wireless-display modes. Confirm compatibility on the phone side and the display side; Miracast capability by itself does not guarantee that a particular handset will expose its desktop mode.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter

The display stays blank over HDMI

  • Recheck that the exact phone supports wired display, not merely Smart Connect PC use or wireless casting.
  • Confirm the monitor’s HDMI input and test the cable or adapter with a known-good compatible setup.
  • Remove an unpowered hub, then try a direct connection. Some combinations need power delivery for stable operation.
  • Restart the phone and display only after the support and input checks; restarting cannot create an unsupported video signal.

The TV or monitor is not found wirelessly

  • Put the display in Miracast or screen-mirroring discovery mode.
  • Verify that the handset model supports wireless DeX or Smart Connect wireless display.
  • Check that another device has not already claimed the display’s wireless session.
  • Move the phone closer and temporarily reduce competing wireless traffic.

Smart Connect pairs but Mobile desktop is missing

  • Confirm that the phone is listed for PC support, not only wireless or wired display.
  • Open Smart Connect on both devices, select the paired computer and look specifically for Mobile desktop.
  • Install pending manufacturer software updates, then repeat the pairing process.
  • If the handset is not listed for PC use, use the connection type Motorola documents for that model instead of forcing the PC workflow.

An app appears only on the phone

That behavior can be intentional. Motorola documents phone-only use for apps incompatible with external displays, and similar app-level limitations can occur in DeX. Update the app if an update is available, but do not assume that a desktop shell can override the app’s display restrictions.

How to make a confident choice

  1. Write down the exact phone model and software version.
  2. Choose the primary destination: HDMI monitor, wireless TV or paired PC.
  3. Check the manufacturer’s current support entry for that destination.
  4. List the two or three apps that must work and test their external-display behavior.
  5. Decide whether you will use the phone as a touchpad or carry a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
  6. Only then purchase a cable, adapter or wireless display accessory.

This process prevents the most expensive mistake in phone desktop mode: buying accessories for a connection the handset never supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: choose by workflow, not by brand

Choose Samsung DeX when a supported Galaxy device will mainly drive a monitor or TV and you value documented wired and wireless display paths, standalone DeX on selected tablets, or the ability to use the phone as a touchpad. Choose Motorola Smart Connect when your compatible Motorola handset’s main job is a Mobile desktop session with a paired PC, or when its compatibility chart confirms the exact wired or wireless display route you need.

There is no evidence here for a universal winner or a performance ranking. Compatibility is model-specific, software-sensitive and connection-dependent. Verify those three details first; the better desktop mode is the one that supports your phone, display and apps without forcing an unsupported adapter or workflow.
