For most people who need a standalone desktop, Windows applications, and a conventional computer, a Windows mini PC is the better choice. Samsung DeX is the better fit when you already own a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet, your essential apps work well in Android, and you want to reuse that device with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
The difference is fundamental: DeX is a desktop-style interface running on a Galaxy device, while a mini PC is a separate Windows computer. Your required software, exact Galaxy model, connection method, and existing hardware should decide the purchase.

Choose a Windows mini PC if you need Windows desktop programs, a computer that works independently of your phone, broad peripheral support, or a familiar Windows desktop environment. What Samsung DeX actually is
Samsung describes DeX as a PC-like experience projected to a larger screen while continuing to use the apps on your Galaxy phone or tablet. In practice, the Galaxy device supplies the processor, storage, operating system, applications, and battery; the monitor or TV supplies the large display; and a keyboard and mouse provide desktop-style input.
DeX does not install Windows on the phone and does not convert Android applications into Windows desktop applications. An app can open in a resizable DeX window only if its Android version supports the relevant behavior. Some apps remain phone-oriented, have limited window controls, or lack features available in their Windows counterparts.
Samsung’s Developer documentation calls this a way to cast a PC-like experience to a big screen using the same apps used on the phone. That is a description of the interface, not a promise that every Android app is suitable for long desktop sessions.

A mini PC is a compact, standalone Windows computer. Microsoft’s mini-PC form-factor guidance describes the category as offering a full PC experience in a small enclosure, with examples of compact dimensions below 2.5 liters and ports such as USB and HDMI. That page was updated on August 24, 2021, so it is useful for the category distinction but not for selecting a current model’s processor, memory, storage, or Windows 11 suitability.
The mini PC has its own operating-system installation, internal storage, memory, processor, networking, and device drivers. It can run Windows desktop applications without depending on a nearby phone. You still need a display and input devices, but the computer remains usable if your phone is elsewhere, out of battery, or being used for a call.
Current model specifications vary widely. Before buying, verify the exact Windows edition, processor generation, installed memory, storage capacity, display outputs, USB ports, wireless networking, power adapter, warranty, and the manufacturer’s support policy. The 4 GB RAM and 32 GB or larger SSD examples on Microsoft’s older form-factor page should not be treated as recommendations for a present-day Windows 11 purchase.

Compatibility is the first DeX decision
Samsung’s U.S. DeX FAQ separates support for wired display output, wireless DeX, and DeX for PC. A Galaxy device may support one connection mode but not another, so “Does my phone support DeX?” is too broad a question. Check the precise model, software version, and intended connection before buying cables or changing your computer setup.

Wired display output
For a wired setup, Samsung documents a compatible DeX or HDMI cable and an HDMI-equipped monitor or TV. The phone or tablet must support wired display output. A USB-C connector alone does not prove that a particular Galaxy model can send a DeX signal over that connector.

Wireless DeX
Wireless DeX works with supported Samsung TVs and Smart Monitors and with other display devices that support Miracast, subject to the Galaxy model’s compatibility. Samsung advises keeping the devices close together to reduce stuttering and lag. Wireless quality also depends on the surrounding network and radio environment, so a cable is usually the safer choice for long work sessions or latency-sensitive input.
DeX for PC
Samsung’s guide describes DeX for PC connections to Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers for listed compatible Galaxy devices, using a USB cable or wireless connection. This mode has a narrower compatibility list than DeX’s general display support.
Samsung specifically says DeX for PC is unsupported on listed newer devices, including the Galaxy S25 and S26 series and Z Fold7, as well as other models updated to Android 15 and One UI 7 or later. That statement concerns the DeX-for-PC connection mode; it does not mean every DeX display mode disappears on every affected device. If your plan is to connect the phone to a Windows computer rather than directly to a monitor, verify the current DeX-for-PC list first. Which software can each option handle?
Choose the mini PC for Windows-only applications
A mini PC is the straightforward choice when your work depends on software distributed for Windows desktop. Examples include a business application that has no Android version, a Windows-only utility, a desktop plug-in, or a workflow that requires Windows file-system integration. You can also use browser-based services on either platform, but browser access does not guarantee that every companion tool, extension, or local client will work the same way.
Check licensing as well as availability. An Android app may require a separate subscription, omit advanced features, or use a different file format from its Windows edition. If your employer, school, or client specifies Windows, treat that requirement as decisive rather than trying to reproduce it through DeX.
Choose DeX when your work is already Android-centered
DeX can be effective for email, web research, messaging, document editing, cloud storage, media playback, and other tasks handled by Android apps with good keyboard and mouse support. It is especially attractive when the Galaxy device already contains your accounts, files, authentication tools, and mobile data connection.
Test the exact apps you use before committing. Open them in DeX, resize their windows, use keyboard shortcuts, attach files, print if necessary, and move between several applications. A phone app that feels fine for a few minutes may be awkward for an eight-hour session if it lacks desktop navigation, multi-window behavior, or the features you rely on.
Do not infer capability from the number of windows
Samsung’s DeX-for-PC guide says users can run up to five mobile apps in that context. This is a stated feature limit, not a benchmark and not evidence that five demanding apps will perform like five Windows programs. App quality, memory use, heat, network activity, and the Galaxy model all affect the experience.

How to set up Samsung DeX for a desk
Wired monitor or TV setup
- Identify the Galaxy model and software version. Check Samsung’s current DeX compatibility information for wired display output. Do this before purchasing an adapter.
- Prepare the display. Use an HDMI monitor or TV with a free HDMI input and switch it to the correct input.
- Use a compatible cable or adapter. Samsung documents compatible DeX or HDMI cables; compatibility varies by device, so match the accessory to the Galaxy model.
- Connect the Galaxy device to the display. Follow the on-screen prompt to start DeX rather than ordinary screen mirroring when both choices are offered.
- Attach input devices. Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or connect USB devices through a suitable hub or adapter. Samsung documents both USB and Bluetooth input.
- Provide adequate power. If the phone is connected to a PC USB port or a low-output hub, battery level can fall during demanding work. Use a suitable separate power supply when the desk setup allows it.
- Open and test your essential apps. Confirm window resizing, sign-in, file access, notifications, audio, and any required peripherals before relying on the setup.
Wireless display setup
- Confirm that both the Galaxy model and the target TV or monitor support wireless DeX or Miracast as applicable.
- Place the Galaxy device close to the display to reduce lag and stuttering.
- Open the DeX or screen-output control on the Galaxy device and select the compatible display.
- Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, then test typing and pointer response in the applications you use most.
- Switch to a wired connection if cursor movement, video playback, or window operations become unreliable.
Connecting DeX to a Windows PC
Use this route only if the exact Galaxy model and software version remain on Samsung’s supported DeX-for-PC list. Samsung documents Windows 10 and Windows 11 hosts, with USB and wireless connection methods for compatible devices. If your phone is an affected newer model or has Android 15 with One UI 7 or later, DeX for PC may not be available even though another DeX display mode is.
How to set up a Windows mini PC
- Define the workload. List the Windows applications, browser tabs, storage needs, displays, printers, cameras, and other peripherals you expect to use at the same time.
- Check the current model specification. Verify processor, memory, storage, Windows edition, display outputs, USB ports, networking, power supply, and support. Do not use the 2021 Microsoft examples as a modern buying specification.
- Connect the hardware. Attach the mini PC’s power adapter, connect HDMI or another supported display output to the monitor, and connect the keyboard, mouse, network, and other peripherals.
- Complete Windows setup. Install updates, sign in with the required account, enable security protections, and install the applications you actually need.
- Test the complete workflow. Open your heaviest normal combination of applications, transfer a representative file, test video calls and audio, and verify that every required port and peripheral works.
- Plan storage and backup. A small enclosure does not eliminate the need for backups. Confirm how you will protect documents and recover if the internal drive fails.
The result is a conventional Windows workstation that remains available without your Galaxy phone. Its limitations are determined by the selected mini PC rather than by DeX compatibility lists.

Total setup and ownership considerations
When DeX is economical
If you already own a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet, DeX may let you avoid buying a second computer. You may still need a monitor or TV, a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or HDMI cable, a keyboard, a mouse, and a suitable charger or hub. If those items are already on your desk, the incremental cost can be small. If you need to buy every accessory, the apparent simplicity of “using your phone as a PC” is less significant.
What the mini PC adds
A mini PC is an additional purchase, but it includes the complete computing platform rather than borrowing the phone’s processor, storage, battery, and applications. It can remain permanently connected to a monitor and wired network, while your phone remains available for calls, navigation, authentication, or personal use.
Display and accessories are shared requirements
Both routes can use the same HDMI monitor, keyboard, and mouse. You do not need to buy a new display if you already have a suitable one. The difference is the computer attached to it: a Galaxy device running DeX or a standalone Windows box.
Connection, power, and reliability trade-offs
Cable versus wireless
A wired DeX connection generally gives you a predictable path to the display and avoids wireless congestion. Wireless DeX removes a cable and can be convenient in a living room, but Samsung advises close device placement to limit stuttering and lag. A mini PC is normally installed with a direct cable to the display, so its reliability is less dependent on wireless display conditions.
Power behavior
DeX puts sustained desktop-style demand on a device designed primarily as a phone or tablet. Samsung notes that power supplied by a PC USB port may be lower than the Galaxy device’s consumption under demanding workloads; the battery can therefore decline while connected. Use a suitable charger or powered hub for a permanent desk.

Heat and sustained workloads
The official material does not provide comparable thermal or performance measurements for DeX and mini PCs. Do not assume that a phone’s peak mobile performance translates into identical sustained desktop performance, or that every mini PC handles heavy workloads well. Judge by the applications you need and the specifications of the particular mini PC.
Common mistakes and fixes
Buying an adapter before checking the Galaxy model
Symptom: the monitor shows no DeX prompt or only charges the phone. Fix: verify that the exact model supports wired display output and that the adapter or cable is compatible. USB-C shape alone is not enough.
Assuming all DeX modes share one compatibility list
Symptom: wireless DeX works, but DeX for PC does not, or a phone connects to a TV but not to a Windows computer. Fix: check the separate lists for wired display, wireless DeX, and DeX for PC, including the phone’s Android and One UI versions.
Expecting Android apps to behave like Windows software
Symptom: missing menus, poor window resizing, unavailable plug-ins, or awkward keyboard shortcuts. Fix: test the app in DeX before moving your workflow. If a required feature exists only in the Windows edition, use a mini PC.
Running DeX from an underpowered USB port
Symptom: the Galaxy battery falls during a session even though a cable is attached. Fix: use a suitable charger or powered hub rather than relying on low-output PC USB power.
Using wireless DeX too far from the display
Symptom: cursor lag, stutter, or intermittent disconnections. Fix: move the devices closer, reduce competing wireless traffic, or use a wired display connection.
Choosing a mini PC from an outdated baseline
Symptom: slow multitasking, insufficient storage, or an unsuitable Windows installation. Fix: evaluate the current model’s processor, memory, storage, ports, Windows support, and warranty instead of relying on Microsoft’s 2021 category examples.

A practical decision checklist
Answer these questions before choosing:
- Do any essential applications require Windows desktop software?
- Do you already own a Galaxy phone or tablet that Samsung lists as compatible for your intended DeX connection?
- Will you connect to a monitor by cable, to a compatible wireless display, or to a Windows PC?
- Have you checked the exact Android and One UI versions, especially if the device is on Android 15 and One UI 7 or later?
- Do your most important Android apps support keyboard, mouse, file handling, printing, and resizable windows?
- Do you have the display, cable or adapter, keyboard, mouse, and charging equipment required for DeX?
- Must the computer remain usable when your phone is away, busy, or out of battery?
- Would a dedicated Windows machine simplify shared use, backups, and a permanent desk?
If the first or seventh question is yes, the mini PC is usually the safer choice. If the second, third, and fifth questions are yes and your work is Android-centered, DeX may provide everything you need without another computer.
Verdict
A Windows mini PC is generally better for everyday desktop use because it is a complete Windows computer, runs Windows desktop applications, and does not depend on a Galaxy device’s battery or app compatibility. Samsung DeX is a capable alternative when you already own a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet and your work fits Android apps that operate well in a desktop window.
Make the decision from the exact software and connection you need, not from the promise of a phone-sized PC. Verify Samsung’s current model lists before buying DeX accessories, and evaluate the current specifications of any mini PC rather than using the dated 2021 Microsoft form-factor examples as a purchasing target.
