Samsung DeX problems usually come from one of three things: the Galaxy model does not support the connection method, the display signal path is incomplete, or the phone and display are using different software or display modes. Identify whether you are using a wired HDMI connection, wireless DeX to a TV or monitor, or DeX for PC before changing settings. Then verify that your exact model supports that route; Galaxy S, Z and A branding alone does not guarantee support for every DeX mode.
Samsung’s current consumer guidance also says DeX for PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later. For those devices, Samsung suggests Link to Windows instead. Compatibility varies by model, software version and region, so check Samsung’s current model-specific compatibility page before buying an adapter or assuming the hardware has failed.
Start with the connection mode and your exact model
DeX behaves differently depending on where you want the desktop interface to appear. A USB-C-to-HDMI connection sends video through a physical cable. Wireless DeX uses a compatible Miracast display. DeX for PC uses Samsung’s computer software and a USB connection. A fix for one route cannot make an unsupported route work.

This route requires a Galaxy phone or tablet with wired DeX support, a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, an HDMI input on the display, and a display that accepts the resulting signal. Samsung documents a standard USB-C-to-HDMI adapter as a way to start DeX. Some devices instead require a DeX cable or a compatible multiport adapter.

Wireless DeX to a TV or Smart Monitor
The display must support Miracast, and the Galaxy model must support wireless DeX. Samsung identifies 2018-and-later Samsung TVs and Smart Monitors as compatible wireless options, while also listing model-specific exclusions. Other Miracast-capable displays may work, but compatibility is not universal.
DeX for PC
DeX for PC has its own device and software requirements. Samsung’s current guidance excludes models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later and directs those users to Link to Windows. A phone that supports wired DeX to a monitor may therefore still be unable to run DeX for PC.
Verify before troubleshooting
- Open Settings > About phone (or About tablet) and record the exact model number.
- Note the Android and One UI versions under the software information screen.
- Use Samsung’s current compatibility guidance for that model and the specific route you want: wired, wireless or PC.
- Check the display type and, for a PC connection, the computer operating system and DeX software version.
If the model is not listed for the chosen mode, replacing cables, docks or software will not add the missing feature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix a wired TV or monitor that shows no DeX screen
Work through the complete signal path rather than testing only the phone. A loose connector, a damaged adapter or an incorrect input can all look like a DeX failure.
- Confirm wired support. Check the exact Galaxy model against Samsung’s current wired-DeX list. Do this before purchasing another accessory.
- Power the display and select the active HDMI input. Use the TV or monitor’s Input or Source control and choose the HDMI port where the adapter is connected. Automatic input switching is not guaranteed.
- Reseat both ends. Unplug the USB-C connector from the Galaxy device and the HDMI connector from the display. Reinsert each firmly. Remove protective cases that prevent the USB-C plug from seating fully.
- Inspect the cable and adapter. Look for bent plugs, cracked housings or frayed cable sections. If another compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable is available, test it. A replacement only helps when the original accessory is the problem; it cannot overcome unsupported hardware.
- Unlock the Galaxy device. Some setups do not begin the desktop session until the phone or tablet is unlocked and the connection prompt is accepted.
- Start DeX manually if necessary. Open Quick Settings and tap DeX. If the tile is not visible, edit the Quick Settings panel and add it, then try again while the HDMI connection is active.
- Check for a display prompt. Some TVs and monitors ask whether to accept the new source or switch inputs. Approve the prompt and wait several seconds for the desktop to load.
- Test another display. Connect the same Galaxy device and adapter to a second compatible monitor or TV. If the second display works, the first display’s input, firmware or signal compatibility is the likely cause.
When a DeX Pad or Station is involved
Place the phone or tablet squarely in the dock and verify that the USB-C connector is aligned. Samsung notes that some phones and tablets do not physically fit older DeX Pad or Station designs. In that case, use a compatible DeX cable or direct USB-C-to-HDMI connection instead of forcing the device into the dock.

What a blank screen means
A completely blank display before DeX appears usually points to compatibility, input selection or the physical signal path. If the display briefly detects a source and then loses it, test a different adapter and HDMI input, then try another monitor. Keep the working and non-working combinations separate so you can identify whether the failure follows the Galaxy device, the accessory or the display.
Stop the external display from mirroring the Galaxy screen
Mirroring and DeX are separate display modes. Mirroring copies the phone or tablet interface; DeX presents a desktop-style interface on the external screen while the Galaxy device can remain available as a separate control surface.

- Install any pending software update on the Galaxy device.
- Confirm that the USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter is compatible and fully connected.
- Open Quick Settings > Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX.
- Under Connected display, choose Extend rather than a mirror or duplicate option.
- Disconnect and reconnect the cable if the mode does not change, then reopen the same Connected display menu.
- Try another compatible monitor or TV to separate a display-compatibility issue from a phone setting.
Samsung Support gives the same isolation advice in its article “External display mirrors Galaxy screen instead of launching DeX”: “If the issue persists, try connecting your device to a different monitor or TV to rule out hardware compatibility.”
Fix wireless DeX connection failures
Wireless DeX needs two compatible devices and a stable wireless link. The display must support Miracast, the Galaxy model must support wireless DeX, and the display must be ready to accept a wireless projection request.
Check wireless requirements
- Confirm Miracast support in the TV or monitor specifications or input menu.
- Verify that the exact Galaxy model supports wireless DeX; wired support does not automatically imply wireless support.
- For Samsung displays, 2018-and-later TVs and Smart Monitors are the families Samsung identifies for wireless use, subject to model exclusions.
- Keep the Galaxy device reasonably close to the display while pairing and during testing.
Reconnect from the Galaxy device
- Turn on the TV or monitor and open its screen-sharing, wireless display or Miracast receiver mode.
- On the Galaxy device, open Quick Settings and tap DeX.
- Select the target display when it appears.
- Accept the connection request on the TV or monitor.
- If the display does not appear, exit wireless display mode on the TV, toggle Wi-Fi on the Galaxy device, and run the scan again.
Samsung’s regional troubleshooting guidance advises checking that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, reconnecting, and installing available software or firmware updates. Follow that guidance for your model and region; some Miracast implementations use a direct wireless link, so the display’s own instructions take precedence if they specify a different network arrangement.

- The Anker Advantage: Join the 80 million+ powered by our leading technology.
- Vivid Video: The HDMI adapter lets you connect to any TV or display with an HDMI port to stream video in up to 4K resolution.
- Plug and Play: Instantly turn your laptop’s USB-C port into an HDMI port, with no installation necessary. This product does not support charging or Power Delivery (PD).

- Compatibility: Supports USB-C DP Alt mode, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections.
Reduce wireless instability
Keep the phone or tablet near the display and remove unnecessary distance or obstructions during setup. If the image stutters, disconnect other screen-sharing sessions, restart both devices, and retry after updates finish. Test a wired connection if available; a stable wired result indicates that the Galaxy and display can render DeX and narrows the problem to wireless compatibility or radio conditions.

Fix DeX for PC problems
Start by checking whether DeX for PC is still supported for the exact Galaxy model and software build. Samsung says models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later are not supported for DeX for PC and recommends Link to Windows instead. No amount of reinstalling the desktop application will restore that unsupported combination.
For a supported phone and PC
- Update Samsung DeX on the computer from the supported distribution channel.
- Install the latest available system update on the Galaxy device.
- Restart both the Galaxy device and the PC before reconnecting.
- Use a known-good USB cable that supports data, not only charging.
- Connect directly to a PC USB port. If the direct connection fails, try another port or a compatible USB hub.
- Unlock the Galaxy device and approve any USB or DeX permission prompt.
- Close other phone-management or screen-sharing software that may have claimed the USB connection, then launch DeX again.
Samsung advises using a USB hub for some Snapdragon and Windows-on-ARM connection problems. A hub can change how the PC negotiates USB, so test both direct and hub connections rather than assuming one is always better.
When a work or public PC blocks DeX
Security software, device-control policies or restricted USB access can prevent DeX from starting even when the phone and application are compatible. Samsung says users may need to contact the PC administrator. Do not attempt to bypass an organization’s security controls; use an approved computer or a monitor connection instead.
When to use Link to Windows
Use Link to Windows when the Galaxy model is on Android 15 with One UI 7 or later and therefore outside DeX for PC support, or when organizational policy prevents installing or running DeX. Link to Windows is an alternative workflow, not a setting that converts an unsupported DeX-for-PC installation into a supported one.

Choose the right connection method
| Connection | What must be compatible | Advantages | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB-C to HDMI | Galaxy model with wired DeX, compatible adapter or cable, HDMI display | Direct signal path; no wireless display requirement | Requires a cable and an available HDMI input |
| USB-C multiport adapter with HDMI | Galaxy model with wired DeX, compatible multiport adapter, HDMI display | Can provide HDMI plus other ports for peripherals | Every additional adapter or port adds another possible connection fault |
| Wireless DeX | Galaxy model with wireless DeX, Miracast-capable TV or monitor | No video cable between device and display | Depends on display support, pairing and wireless conditions |
| DeX Pad or Station | Galaxy model supported by the dock and physically compatible with its connector | Docked setup can keep accessories connected | Older docks have device-fit and compatibility caveats |
| DeX for PC | Supported Galaxy model and software, compatible PC and USB data connection | Runs the DeX desktop in a computer workflow | Not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later |
Choose the direct HDMI route when the priority is a predictable wired display and your model supports it. Choose wireless only when the TV or monitor explicitly supports the required wireless display technology. A multiport adapter makes sense when you need peripherals or storage at the same time, while a dock is appropriate only when the device physically fits and appears on the dock’s compatibility list.
Buying an adapter without creating a new problem
Confirm model support first, then buy a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable for the direct wired path. Samsung also lists multiport adapters with HDMI in its troubleshooting guidance, but each adapter still needs to support video output from the specific Galaxy device.
- Check that the accessory carries video over USB-C, not charging and data only.
- Match the connector types to the display: HDMI on the display side and USB-C on the Galaxy side.
- Prefer the shortest practical cable path while diagnosing a blank screen.
- Keep the adapter’s packaging and return option until the exact phone, display and input combination works.
- Do not treat a DeX Pad or Station as a universal upgrade; physical fit and model support vary.
No particular third-party listing is guaranteed by these steps. The defensible purchase is an accessory whose specifications and compatibility information match the Galaxy model and connection route you have already confirmed.
Use the test result to isolate the failing component
Change one variable at a time. This prevents a new cable, a different HDMI input and a software reset from obscuring the cause.

- Same phone, same adapter, different display works: investigate the original TV or monitor’s input, firmware or compatibility.
- Different adapter fixes the same display: the original adapter or cable is the likely failure point.
- Phone works wired but not wirelessly: focus on Miracast support, wireless-DeX eligibility and pairing conditions.
- Phone works on a monitor but not a PC: check DeX-for-PC eligibility and computer-side software or policy rather than the phone’s HDMI hardware.
- No display works with a confirmed supported model and known-good accessories: install updates, restart the Galaxy device, and contact Samsung Support with the model number, software version, adapter type and display model.
Prevent recurring DeX failures
- Keep the Galaxy software and TV, monitor or PC software current.
- Label the HDMI input and adapter that have been verified to work so they are not confused with charging-only cables.
- Disconnect DeX cleanly before removing a dock or adapter when possible.
- Store USB-C and HDMI connectors without bending the cable sharply.
- Record the exact model and One UI version before changing accessories; compatibility lists can change with software generations and regional support.
