Yes, but only on a phone that supports the right display features. The strongest Samsung DeX alternatives today are Motorola Smart Connect and Android’s desktop windowing on supported devices. Both can put phone apps into separate windows on a larger screen, but neither is a universal Android capability. Before buying a cable, dock or monitor, verify your exact phone model, whether it supports wired USB-C video output or wireless display, and whether you need a monitor-only desktop or phone-to-PC integration.
What counts as a DeX alternative?
A DeX-style setup is more than mirroring a phone screen. The phone remains the computer, while an external monitor or television shows a desktop-like interface with multiple app windows, a pointer and keyboard input. You can use the phone’s processor, storage and mobile apps without carrying a separate laptop.
Android manufacturers implement this in different ways. One phone may support a wired USB-C-to-HDMI connection but not wireless display. Another may support Miracast but have no PC integration. A third may offer desktop windowing only on particular software versions. The feature therefore belongs to the individual handset and its software, not to Android phones as a whole.
The three relevant choices are:
- Motorola Smart Connect: Motorola’s mobile desktop experience, with multiple windows on an external display plus optional TV, video-chat, gaming, mirroring and PC functions.
- Android desktop windowing: Google’s system-level multi-window desktop experience on supported devices. Availability and behavior vary by device and manufacturer.
- Samsung DeX: Still the baseline for compatible Galaxy phones and tablets. External-display DeX and DeX for PC are different workflows, with different compatibility rules.
Official documentation does not establish a reliable across-brand speed or quality ranking. Choose by support for your exact phone, connection type, apps and intended workflow rather than by a claimed universal performance advantage.

Motorola Smart Connect: the closest drop-in alternative
What it provides
Smart Connect can present a Motorola phone’s apps in multiple movable and resizable windows on a connected monitor or TV. Motorola also documents modes for viewing video, making video calls, playing games, mirroring the phone and connecting to a PC. That makes it the most clearly packaged DeX-style alternative in the available documentation.
Windowed apps are useful for work such as writing in one window while referencing a browser in another. The phone supplies the applications and processing; the external screen supplies workspace. A Bluetooth mouse can control the pointer. If you do not have one, Motorola says the phone can act as a trackpad or an air mouse, although that is less convenient for long sessions.
Compatibility is model-by-model
Do not assume every Edge, Razr, Moto G or ThinkPhone model supports Smart Connect in the same way. Motorola’s compatibility chart separates three capabilities:
| Capability | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Wired display | USB-C video output on the exact handset | Required for a USB-C cable, HDMI adapter or many docks |
| Wireless display | Miracast support on the exact handset and receiving display | Allows a cable-free connection but depends on compatible wireless hardware |
| PC connection | Smart Connect PC support for the exact handset and software | Determines whether the phone can integrate with a computer rather than only a monitor |
The chart also warns that product availability varies by region. Check the current entry for your full model number and market immediately before purchasing accessories or changing phones.
Wired Smart Connect setup
- Open Motorola’s current Smart Connect compatibility chart and confirm that your exact phone supports wired display. A phone having a USB-C socket is not enough.
- Use a video-enabled USB 3.1 USB-C cable, or connect a USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter to the phone and the monitor or television. Motorola notes that some dock-enabled displays can connect directly over USB-C.
- Select the display’s matching HDMI or USB-C input.
- Accept the Smart Connect prompt on the phone and choose the mobile desktop or external-display mode rather than simple mirroring, if the phone offers both.
- Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for a laptop-like setup. Without a mouse, use the phone as a trackpad or air mouse.
Motorola describes HDMI as a wired option with reduced latency and smoother performance compared with its wireless connection guidance. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparative test, so treat it as a connection characteristic rather than a measured benchmark.

- Compatibility: Supports USB-C, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections. Compatible with Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
Wireless Smart Connect setup
- Confirm that the phone’s Smart Connect chart entry includes wireless display and that the television or monitor supports the required Miracast receiving function.
- Turn on the display’s wireless-screen or Miracast mode.
- Open Smart Connect on the phone, select the wireless display and approve pairing.
- Choose the desktop experience if available. If the phone offers only mirroring for that connection, apps will remain in the phone’s screen arrangement rather than a full desktop workspace.
Wireless connections avoid a cable but can add delay and depend on the receiver, distance and radio environment. A monitor that accepts Chromecast or another casting standard is not automatically a Miracast receiver; verify the display specification.
Smart Connect limitations
- Some mobile apps are not compatible with an external display.
- Desktop behavior depends on the phone’s model and software build, not just the Smart Connect name.
- PC functions and external-display functions are separate columns in Motorola’s chart; support for one does not imply support for the other.
- A hub, portable monitor or Bluetooth keyboard cannot create video output when the phone itself lacks it.
Android desktop windowing on supported phones
How Google’s desktop windowing works
Google describes desktop windowing as a mode in which multiple apps open in separate windows that can be resized and organized. With a supported connected display, this can provide the basic behavior people seek from DeX: overlapping windows, a larger work area and simultaneous use of several apps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGoogle explicitly says desktop windowing is not available on every device and that the experience can vary. Manufacturers decide which phones receive the capability and how it is exposed in their software. The same Android release can therefore behave differently on two brands, or on two models from one brand.
What to check before relying on it
- Look for a manufacturer statement that your exact model supports desktop windowing, not merely “multi-window” on the phone screen.
- Confirm how the phone connects to an external display: wired USB-C video, wireless display, or both.
- Check the phone’s Android and manufacturer-interface version. Feature availability can change with updates.
- Test the applications you need. A window may open but still have phone-oriented controls or a fixed layout.
Desktop windowing is best treated as a platform feature with uneven rollout, not as a guaranteed DeX replacement on any Android phone.
App resizing and compatibility
Desktop modes cannot force every Android app to become a desktop program. Samsung’s developer FAQ notes that apps that do not comply with Android multi-window standards can remain fixed-size rather than resizable. Other devices may letterbox, center or otherwise constrain such apps. Before adopting a phone as your primary computer, test the browser, office, messaging, remote-access and media apps you actually use.

Samsung DeX remains an option, but separate the workflows
DeX on an external display
On compatible Galaxy devices, Samsung documents DeX through a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, a compatible dock such as a DeX Pad or Station, and wireless display connections on supported screens. This is the conventional DeX scenario: the phone drives a monitor or television and presents a desktop interface.
Adapter support is conditional. The phone, cable or adapter, display input and software must all support the required video path. A generic USB-C accessory does not guarantee DeX or video output.
DeX for PC is different
DeX for PC places a DeX environment inside a Windows or compatible computer connection rather than directly taking over an external monitor. Samsung’s support documentation states that DeX for PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later and directs affected users toward Link to Windows. That restriction does not mean external-display DeX has disappeared; Samsung documents those cable, adapter and wireless-display workflows separately.
When comparing alternatives, ask whether you need a monitor-only desktop or phone integration with a PC. A phone can support one and not the other.
Choosing between the alternatives
| Decision factor | Motorola Smart Connect | Android desktop windowing | Samsung DeX |
|---|---|---|---|
| External-display desktop | Available on compatible Motorola models | Available only on supported devices | Available on compatible Galaxy devices |
| Wired connection | Requires a model with USB-C video output | Depends on manufacturer and model | Uses supported USB-C-to-HDMI adapters or docks |
| Wireless display | Model-specific Miracast support | Device and manufacturer-specific | Wireless DeX on compatible displays |
| PC integration | Separate model-specific Smart Connect support | Not established as a universal feature | DeX for PC has a current Android 15/One UI 7 limitation |
| Window behavior | Multiple windows where Smart Connect supports the desktop mode | Resizable, organized app windows where enabled | Desktop windows, with non-compliant apps potentially fixed-size |
Choose Smart Connect when
You already own a compatible Motorola phone, want a clearly labeled mobile desktop mode and can verify wired, wireless or PC support in Motorola’s chart. It is also a practical choice when you want the same feature family to cover an external monitor, television, video chat and gaming.

Choose Android desktop windowing when
Your current phone explicitly supports Google’s desktop windowing and your priority is a flexible multi-window workspace rather than a particular manufacturer’s ecosystem. Confirm the display connection and app behavior first because availability and implementation vary.
Stay with DeX when
You already have a compatible Galaxy device and your workflow depends on DeX-specific behavior, accessories or Samsung’s documented external-display support. Check the separate DeX for PC rule if your plan involves a computer rather than a monitor.
Accessories and connection requirements
The non-negotiable requirement: phone-side video output
A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter works only when the phone supports video output over USB-C. Motorola explicitly warns that not all phones do. The same principle applies to USB-C hubs and docks: they can route a signal the phone provides, but they cannot add a missing display controller.
Useful optional equipment
- USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable: For phones with wired video output and displays with HDMI input.
- USB-C hub: Useful when the phone supports video over USB-C and you also need USB accessories, charging or another connector. Verify that the hub supports the phone’s display mode.
- Portable monitor: Convenient for travel, but it still requires a compatible wired or wireless signal from the phone.
- Bluetooth keyboard and mouse: Recommended for sustained writing, spreadsheets and window management.
- Dock: Helpful for a permanent desk, provided the dock, phone and display support the same video standard.
No particular accessory model is universally compatible. Match the accessory to the handset’s documented wired or wireless capability and the monitor’s input or receiver standard.

- Write down the exact phone model and software version. “Moto G” or “Galaxy” is too broad; regional variants can differ.
- Check the manufacturer support page. For Motorola, inspect the Smart Connect chart’s wired display, wireless display and PC columns. For Samsung, distinguish external-display DeX from DeX for PC. For other brands, look for an explicit desktop-windowing and external-display statement.
- Choose wired or wireless deliberately. Wired is the safer path for latency and predictable connections, but only if USB-C video output is supported. Wireless is simpler physically but requires a compatible receiver and may be less responsive.
- Verify the monitor or television. Confirm HDMI or USB-C input for a cable, or Miracast support for a wireless connection. Set the correct input before troubleshooting the phone.
- Connect power if needed. Desktop use can drain a phone quickly. A hub or dock must support charging while carrying video if you want both at once.
- Pair input devices. A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse make windowed work practical; otherwise use the phone’s trackpad or air-mouse mode where available.
- Test essential apps. Open each application, resize it, move it between windows and check sign-in, audio, camera, file access and keyboard shortcuts.
- Update only after checking support notes. An operating-system update can add, change or remove PC-integration behavior. Samsung’s Android 15 with One UI 7 DeX-for-PC restriction illustrates why version details matter.
Troubleshooting common failures
The display says “no signal”
- Recheck that the phone model supports wired video output; USB-C alone proves nothing.
- Confirm the monitor is on the HDMI or USB-C input used by the adapter.
- Try a video-rated USB-C cable or adapter rather than a charge-only cable.
- Remove the hub temporarily and test a direct phone-to-display connection.
- Restart the phone and display, then reconnect after unlocking the phone.
Wireless pairing fails
- Put the display in its Miracast or wireless-screen receiving mode.
- Confirm that the phone’s compatibility entry includes wireless display; casting support under another standard is not equivalent.
- Move the phone closer to the display and disconnect other wireless-screen sessions.
- Test wired output if supported to determine whether the problem is the receiver rather than the phone.
The desktop appears, but an app is tiny or cannot be resized
The app may not comply with Android multi-window requirements. Try the app’s tablet or desktop layout if it offers one, use a browser version, or choose a different application. A desktop mode cannot guarantee that every mobile app becomes resizable.

PC integration is missing
Check the manufacturer’s PC-support column or documentation separately from external-display support. On Samsung devices running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later, DeX for PC is not supported; Samsung points users to Link to Windows instead. On Motorola phones, Smart Connect PC support is also model-specific.
Privacy, power and practical limits
A phone-as-desktop setup concentrates your files, accounts and notifications on one device. Lock the phone when leaving the desk, use a trusted display and avoid unknown USB accessories in public spaces. If the display is shared, remember that notifications and recently used apps can appear on the larger screen.
Long sessions can produce heat and battery drain, especially with video calls, games or high-brightness displays. A connection that carries video while charging is preferable for desk use, but the phone, hub and charger must all support that combination. Performance also depends on the app, display resolution, wireless conditions and thermal behavior; the official sources do not provide a cross-brand benchmark.
Bottom line: verify the handset before buying anything
For a non-Samsung Android phone, Motorola Smart Connect is the most fully documented DeX-style alternative when your exact Motorola model supports the required display mode. Android desktop windowing is promising for supported devices but less predictable because Google and manufacturers vary its availability and behavior. Samsung DeX remains a strong option on compatible Galaxy hardware, provided you distinguish external-display DeX from the separately limited DeX for PC workflow.
The safest purchase sequence is simple: identify the exact phone and software version, confirm wired USB-C video or wireless-display support in the manufacturer’s documentation, then select the adapter, monitor and input devices that match. Accessories cannot compensate for a phone that lacks the underlying display capability.
