There are two ways to connect a Samsung device to Alexa: use Alexa built into a supported Samsung TV or monitor, or link compatible devices in SmartThings to the Alexa app. The right steps and available voice commands depend on your device, model, region, and the connection route.

Samsung Support (US) says Alexa is built into all Samsung Smart TVs starting in 2020 and all Samsung Smart Monitors starting in 2022. The setup Samsung describes requires a Samsung account and an internet connection. Check the instructions for your exact model: hands-free wake-up is not available on every TV. Samsung: Use Alexa with your Samsung TV or monitor

Set up Alexa on a supported Samsung TV or monitor

  1. Connect the TV or monitor to the internet and have your Amazon account details ready. Samsung also requires a Samsung account for the setup described in its support guidance.
  2. During first-time setup, select Alexa as the voice assistant. If setup is complete, open the Alexa app from the TV’s Home screen, or use the settings route below.
  3. On the TV, go to Settings > General > Voice > Voice assistant > Alexa > OK. Scan the on-screen QR code with your phone, sign in to Amazon, tap Allow, then follow the remaining prompts on the TV.
  4. To speak to Alexa, press and hold the microphone button on the remote. On models that support voice wake-up, you can enable it under Settings > General > Voice. Availability varies by model.

Samsung says you can review, hear, and delete voice recordings in Alexa privacy settings or in the Alexa phone app. Its setup guidance describes pressing and holding the remote microphone as an interaction method and notes an on-screen indicator; it does not say that the TV microphone is continuously transmitting. See Samsung’s TV and monitor Alexa instructions and Samsung’s voice-assistant setup steps.

Link SmartThings devices to Alexa

Use this route when you want an Alexa app or Alexa device to control a compatible TV, soundbar, or other SmartThings device. Samsung’s current instructions use the SmartThings app, not SmartThings Classic.

  4. Complete the prompts to sign in with your Samsung credentials, choose a SmartThings location if asked, and authorize the account connection.

What Alexa can control through SmartThings

Samsung lists lights, on/off switches, dimmer switches, thermostats, locks, and SmartThings routines as supported categories for SmartThings/Alexa control. Alexa can also check the status of motion and contact sensors. This is not a promise that every SmartThings device or command is supported.

For TV control through the SmartThings/Alexa connection, Samsung gives basic examples such as turning on the TV and changing channels. Do not assume this route supports every TV feature, menu, or navigation command. A TV with Alexa built in instead uses its on-TV Alexa setup, with model-dependent features.

Samsung UK says adding Alexa enables it for all locations within an account. Because account-region behavior may differ, rely on the location and authorization prompts shown in your own apps rather than assuming a particular location will be shared. Fix discovery or connection problems

  • The TV or soundbar does not appear in Alexa: Confirm it is registered in SmartThings, then check that you enabled the correct skill: SmartThings for a TV or Samsung Wireless Audio for a soundbar.
  • Linking stopped at authorization: Revisit the account-linking flow and complete any Samsung sign-in, location selection, or permission prompts.
  • Alexa discovers the wrong device or the name is hard to say: Give the device a short, clear name in SmartThings, avoiding special characters, then run discovery again.
  • Automatic discovery does not start: In the Alexa app, go to the Devices tab and use Add or Add Device, then select SmartThings if offered. You can also ask Alexa to discover devices.

These checks follow Samsung’s documented steps; app labels can change over time. For device-specific eligibility or controls, consult the support page for your model.

Unlink SmartThings from Alexa

Samsung documents two ways to remove the connection: in SmartThings, open Menu > Settings > Linked services > Amazon Alexa > Unlink, or disable the SmartThings skill in Alexa’s smart-home skill controls. Menu wording may vary between app versions. Samsung’s instructions are at Connect SmartThings to Alexa.
