Samsung Cloud sync and device backup do different jobs: sync keeps selected data aligned across devices using the same Samsung account, while a backup saves supported categories so you can restore them later. On a Galaxy device, look under Settings > Accounts and backup for both. The exact options depend on your device, software, carrier, and country.
Choose sync or backup for the job

Samsung describes sync as matching data across devices using the same Samsung account. That means it is not an archive: if you edit or delete a synced note on one device, that change can appear on the other devices using the account. See Samsung’s explanation of Samsung Cloud sync.
Turn on Samsung Cloud sync
- On your Galaxy device, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts.
- Tap your Samsung account, then choose Sync account.
- Enable only the categories you want to keep in sync. If you need to request an immediate update, open the relevant item and tap Sync now.
Menu names and available categories can vary by model, software version, carrier, and country. Check the options shown on your device rather than assuming every Galaxy has the same list. Samsung’s sync instructions also describe accessing Samsung Cloud from Accounts and backup.

When contacts or calendars do not sync
Check which account owns the data. Samsung says contacts and calendars associated with a Google account are not synchronized through Samsung Cloud. A Samsung Cloud sync setting cannot move that data into Samsung Cloud; use the account or service that contains it. See Samsung Canada’s Samsung Cloud guidance.

Create a device backup
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data.
- Select the categories you want included.
- Tap Back up now to start a backup. To set up automatic backup, use the options on the same screen.
Samsung Canada lists categories such as call and message history, device-saved contacts and calendar, clock, settings, home screen, apps, and voice recordings. The actual selection depends on your device and software. Samsung Canada also says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud, and recommends Wi-Fi because mobile-data charges may apply. See its backup instructions.
Automatic backup conditions
Samsung Canada says automatic backup requires the phone to be charging, its screen to be off, and a Wi-Fi connection. If a backup does not run, check those conditions and confirm that automatic backup is enabled in Samsung Cloud’s backup settings.

Restore a backup to a Galaxy device
- On the compatible Galaxy device, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Restore data.
- Choose the relevant device backup.
- Select the categories you want to restore and start the restore process.
This is the route Samsung provides for restoring data on a new Galaxy device or after a factory reset. You cannot use the Samsung Cloud web portal to download backup items individually; restoration requires a compatible device. Do not assume your Gallery library is included in a Samsung Cloud device backup. Samsung US says photos and videos in Gallery cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud. Samsung identifies Gallery sync with Microsoft OneDrive as a separate option, so check Gallery’s own sync settings if you want to sync those photos and videos. This is distinct from the Samsung Cloud backup categories. See Samsung’s explanation of device backups and Gallery.

Check Samsung Cloud from a browser
Sign in to the Samsung Cloud web portal with your Samsung account; Samsung may ask you to complete two-step verification. The portal can show summaries of synced apps and device backup listings, but it does not provide individual backup files for download. To recover backup data, restore it on a compatible Galaxy device. Samsung describes portal access in its US backup-access guidance.

Limits and account considerations
- Availability varies: Samsung says features and supported categories can depend on device model, software, country, and carrier. Use your device’s displayed settings as the check for what is available.
- Inactive accounts: Samsung’s US and Canada support pages state that stored data is deleted after more than 12 months without use and that advance notice is provided. Check the current terms for your region if you rely on older cloud data. See Samsung US and Samsung Canada.
- Data ownership matters: Samsung Cloud sync does not cover contacts and calendars associated with a Google account, according to Samsung Canada’s support guidance.
