On a Samsung Chromebook with a backlit keyboard, press the top-row key marked with the keyboard-backlight brightness icon to brighten the keys. Use the matching decrease-brightness key if needed. The exact key can vary, and some Samsung Chromebooks have no keyboard backlight at all—so confirm your model supports the feature before troubleshooting.
Check whether your Samsung Chromebook has a backlit keyboard
Backlighting depends on the model, not just the Samsung or Chromebook name. Samsung lists the Galaxy Chromebook 2 as having a backlit keyboard, while the Galaxy Chromebook 2 360 specification says “Backlit Keyboard: None.” Check the full model name or model number against its specifications before looking for a control.

Turn on or adjust the keyboard light
- Find the backlight keys. Look across the Chromebook’s top row for the keyboard-backlight brightness icons. Google documents separate keys to decrease and increase keyboard-backlight brightness on supported Chromebooks.
- Press the increase-brightness key. Press it again if you want more light. Use the decrease-brightness key to dim the keyboard.
Use the icons printed on your own keyboard rather than assuming a particular key number or Fn combination. Google’s Chromebook keyboard guide describes the backlight controls but does not specify one universal Samsung Chromebook key.

If the keyboard light stays off
Check Battery Saver
When Battery Saver is active, ChromeOS turns off the keyboard backlight. Check whether Battery Saver is on and turn it off if you need the light. Google explains this behavior in its Battery Saver guidance.
Try Samsung’s sensor check on supported models
Some Samsung Chromebook models have an ambient light sensor. For supported models, Samsung recommends covering the sensor at the upper left of the keyboard with your hand, then checking the backlight while pressing keys. Samsung also suggests restarting the Chromebook to reset the brightness level. The diagnostic checks apply only to supported models; they are not proof that every Samsung Chromebook has a sensor or backlit keyboard. See Samsung’s Chromebook diagnostics instructions.

Continue with basic ChromeOS keyboard troubleshooting
If the model has a backlit keyboard and the brightness key still does not work, Google’s general troubleshooting order is to restart the Chromebook, test the keyboard in guest browsing, and then consider a hardware reset. A factory reset is a later option for problems tied to the owner account, not a first step for a dark keyboard. If the issue remains, contact Samsung for model-specific support. Follow Google’s keyboard troubleshooting steps and Samsung’s support resources.
Why Fn+F9 may not be the right shortcut
Samsung’s Fn+F9 backlight directions are for Samsung PCs and notebooks, not established Chromebook instructions. On a Chromebook, use the keyboard-backlight icons on the top row when the model supports the feature. Do not assume a Windows notebook shortcut applies to ChromeOS.
