Yes—Samsung Galaxy phones can stop actively charging at 100%. In Samsung’s Basic battery-protection mode, charging pauses when the battery reaches 100% and resumes when it falls to 95%. The status indicator may still show 100% while the phone is powered by the charger. A separate Battery protection limit can intentionally stop charging at 80%, 85%, 90%, 95%, or another model-specific threshold.
Those behaviors are software controls, not automatically a failed battery or charger. The exact modes, limits, menu labels, and availability depend on your Galaxy model, region, and One UI version.
What “stops charging at 100%” actually means
A Galaxy phone does not need to pull maximum current continuously after the battery reaches full. The charging controller reduces or stops battery charging, then supplies the phone’s operating power from the adapter when appropriate. Samsung documents this behavior in Basic mode: the battery reaches 100%, charging pauses, and charging resumes at 95% if the level drops while the phone remains connected.
As a result, seeing 100% for an extended period while plugged in is normal. The number on screen is a state-of-charge estimate; it is not proof that current is flowing into the battery at the same rate as it did at 20%.

Samsung says its protection feature exists because Keeping your battery at a full 100% charge for a long time can reduce its lifespan.
The support material does not quantify the reduction or promise a specific number of extra cycles, so treat the feature as a battery-care option rather than a guaranteed lifespan calculation.
See Samsung’s explanation of the feature in Galaxy Battery protection feature in One UI 6.1.
Battery protection modes and their thresholds
Samsung’s One UI 6.1 guidance describes three modes. They balance runtime against the amount of time the battery remains at a very high state of charge.
| Mode | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Charges to 100%, pauses there, and resumes at 95% when the level falls. | People who need the maximum daily runtime and want the phone to manage charging automatically. |
| Adaptive | Uses the Maximum limit while you are sleeping, then switches to Basic before the expected wake-up time so the phone can reach 100% near morning. | People who usually charge overnight but want a full battery when they start the day. |
| Maximum | Stops charging at 80% in the One UI 6.1 documentation. | People who can accept less runtime in exchange for avoiding a full charge during long periods on a charger. |
Adaptive charging depends on the phone identifying a sleep or charging pattern; it is not a promise that every model will switch at the same clock time. Samsung also changes the available choices in newer software.

Why your phone may stop at 80%, 85%, 90%, or 95%
If charging consistently stops below 100%, check Battery protection before replacing a cable, adapter, or battery. A selected maximum limit deliberately prevents a full charge. Samsung’s US troubleshooting page specifically addresses Galaxy devices that are “not charging past 80% or 85%” and directs users to inspect this setting.
Threshold choices are not universal. Samsung Canada’s One UI 7 guidance describes selectable Maximum limits of 80%, 85%, 90%, and 95%. A Samsung Colombia page updated June 11, 2026, says One UI 8 or later can offer a Maximum range from 80% through 95%. These are regional support descriptions, not a guarantee that every Galaxy sold elsewhere has every step.
| Software guidance | Documented choices | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| One UI 6.1 | Basic, Adaptive, or Maximum at 80% | Samsung’s Singapore support description, updated April 11, 2024. |
| One UI 7 | Maximum at 80%, 85%, 90%, or 95% | Samsung Canada support guidance; availability depends on device and region. |
| One UI 8 or later | Maximum selectable from 80% through 95% | Samsung Colombia guidance updated June 11, 2026; not necessarily available on every model. |
The percentage shown in a setting is a control threshold, not a measurement of battery health. A phone stopping at 85% does not by itself indicate that the battery can hold only 85% of its original capacity.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Open Battery protection.
- Review the selected mode and maximum percentage.
- Choose Basic if that is the available mode that permits charging to 100%, or turn Battery protection off when your software presents an on/off control.
- Reconnect the charger and check whether the percentage rises beyond the previous limit.
Labels can differ by model, carrier software, language, and One UI release. If you do not see the same path, search Settings for Battery protection and consult the manual or local Samsung support page for your exact model. Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions are available at Samsung Galaxy device battery is not charging past 80% or 85%.
Changing the limit does not instantly add energy. The phone must resume its normal charging process, and charging speed can taper as the battery approaches full.
What to check when charging stops unexpectedly
The percentage is exactly 80%, 85%, 90%, or 95%
An exact, repeatable ceiling strongly suggests a Battery protection setting. Open the menu above and inspect both the mode and the selected limit. If the limit is intentional, no repair is needed.

The percentage fluctuates around the threshold
That can be the expected restart behavior rather than a fault. Basic mode is designed to resume after the level falls to 95%, so a phone left connected may move between a full reading and a slightly lower reading.
The phone stops at an irregular percentage
First inspect Battery protection. If no limit is enabled, check whether the connector is fully seated, the port is free of visible debris, and the adapter and cable are rated for the phone. Try a known-good Samsung-compatible charger and cable, then restart the phone. Stop using the setup if the phone, plug, or cable becomes unusually hot, smells burnt, or shows physical damage; seek Samsung service rather than forcing the connection.
The setting is missing or behaves differently
Samsung states that behavior varies by device and software version. Install available system updates, search Settings for the feature name, and use the support documentation for the phone’s sales region. Do not assume that a One UI 7 or One UI 8 option documented in one country exists on a different regional variant.
Choosing the right charging behavior
There is no single universally correct threshold. Decide from your daily routine:

- Choose Basic when you regularly need every possible percentage before the next opportunity to charge.
- Choose Adaptive when the phone normally stays connected overnight and your model supports sleep-aware charging.
- Choose a Maximum limit when you spend long periods near a charger and can complete the day with less than a full battery.
- Use a higher selectable limit, such as 90% or 95%, when 80% is too restrictive but you still want a cap below full, if your software provides those choices.
Samsung’s published pages explain the intended battery-care rationale but do not provide a quantified longevity improvement for any particular threshold. Therefore, compare the practical runtime you lose against the unmeasured potential benefit instead of treating 80% as a mandatory health rule.
What the charging percentage does—and does not—tell you
The displayed percentage is an estimate generated by the phone’s battery-management system. A protection cap changes the highest permitted charging level; it does not recalibrate the battery’s capacity or mean that the battery has degraded to that number.
Likewise, a pause at 100% is not evidence that the phone is permanently disconnected from the charger. The controller can stop battery charging, power the device from the adapter, and resume charging only after the level falls to Samsung’s restart point.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Samsung’s guidance supports the existence of these controls and thresholds, but it does not establish a universal charging time, a universal restart percentage for every mode, or a guaranteed service-life extension across all Galaxy models. Keep those limits in mind when comparing advice written for another One UI release or country.
Samsung’s regional guidance and the safest way to interpret it
Version labels matter because Battery protection has evolved. The Singapore page documents One UI 6.1’s three-mode design; Canada documents additional selectable Maximum percentages from One UI 7; and Colombia describes a broader 80–95% range for One UI 8 or later. Those pages are useful references, but your phone’s own menu is authoritative for what you can select.
For the Colombia explanation and its June 11, 2026 update date, see Samsung Colombia’s battery-protection support page. Samsung Canada’s threshold guidance is at Battery protection TIPS.
If a support page names a mode or percentage that is absent from your phone, that is normally a software, model, or regional difference—not proof that the phone is malfunctioning. Use the available control that matches your charging routine and verify the exact One UI version under your device’s software information.
