The Samsung camera setting most likely to help is not a universal image-quality upgrade: Camera Assistant’s Minimum shutter speed and Maximum ISO controls can make a dark-looking preview brighter when set to None. Samsung says those controls limit shutter speed and ISO to reduce blur and noise, so disabling them changes a trade-off rather than guaranteeing better photos. The exact menus and options depend on your Galaxy model, software, and region.
What setting can make a Samsung camera preview brighter?
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance points to Camera Assistant’s Advanced Photo mode controls when the camera preview looks too dark. If you want a brighter preview, set Minimum shutter speed and Maximum ISO to None. Samsung describes these controls as limiting shutter speed and ISO to reduce blur and noise; removing those limits may make the preview brighter but does not promise a sharper or better final image in every scene. Samsung’s camera troubleshooting guidance gives the adjustment for that specific symptom.
Where to find the controls
- Open the Camera app.
- Tap Quick controls (the four-squares icon), then tap Settings.
- Open Camera Assistant, then Advanced Photo mode controls.
- Set Minimum shutter speed and Maximum ISO to None if the preview is too dark and a brighter preview is what you want.
Samsung says Camera Assistant is available only in countries that support Good Lock. If you do not see these options, availability or menu labels may differ for your device, software version, or region; the setting may not be supported on your phone.
Should you turn these controls off?
| Choice | What it does | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the constraints enabled | Limits shutter speed and ISO to help reduce blur and noise, according to Samsung. | You prefer those safeguards and the preview is not too dark. | The preview may remain darker than you want in some conditions. |
| Set both controls to None | Removes those limits, which Samsung recommends when seeking a brighter preview. | The preview looks too dark and brightness is your priority. | This changes the blur-and-noise trade-off; Samsung does not claim it improves every finished photo. |
Judge the result in the scene you actually shoot. A brighter preview alone is not proof that detail, focus, or motion handling improved.

Check the scene and lens before changing camera settings
A setting is only one possible explanation for a disappointing photo. Samsung lists lighting direction and amount, movement by the camera or subject, shooting distance, and lens smudges among the causes to check. Clean the camera lens gently with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Samsung warns that a camera protector or lens cover can cause focus problems or distort light.
Close subjects and zoom can need different fixes
For a nearby subject, Samsung says Focus enhancer can switch to the ultra-wide camera to reduce blur around the subject. On Galaxy Ultra models, the telephoto camera is designed for distant subjects, so a close object may be out of focus at high zoom. If only close-ups are soft, check focus distance and camera selection before changing the exposure-related controls.

For low light, choose between Night mode and Pro mode
Samsung UK describes Night mode as adjusting exposure and white balance for low light. Hold the phone steady while taking the picture; Samsung says a tripod can help if one is available. This automatic mode is a different approach from changing Camera Assistant’s limits.

Pro mode is the manual alternative. Samsung says it lets you control ISO, shutter speed, exposure, filters, focus, and white balance. Use it when you want to adjust those variables yourself; it is not the same as simply making the preview brighter. Availability and exact behavior can vary by device. See Samsung UK’s camera modes guidance for its descriptions of Night and Pro modes.

Why advice for another Galaxy may not match your phone
Camera options are not uniform across the Galaxy range. Samsung Ireland’s Camera Assistant guide for the Galaxy S24 Ultra discusses features including Auto HDR, Picture softening, Auto lens switching, Adaptive Pixel, Quick tap shutter, and Prioritise Focus Over Speed. Samsung says the last option waits for focus before triggering the shutter, which can delay capture. That model-specific list is not evidence that every Galaxy has the same controls.
Samsung’s One UI 6 announcement discussed camera-related software in the context of that release, including Enhance-X, document scanning, and high-resolution quick settings. Those historical release notes do not establish that each feature is present or current on every Galaxy phone. Samsung’s One UI 6 announcement is useful for that release context, not as a universal compatibility list.

A practical order for troubleshooting a disappointing photo
- Check light, its direction, subject movement, and the distance between the camera and subject.
- Wipe the lens with a soft, dry microfiber cloth and remove any camera cover or protector that may be affecting focus or light.
- If the preview itself is too dark and you want it brighter, try setting Camera Assistant’s Minimum shutter speed and Maximum ISO to None, if your device offers the controls.
- For low-light scenes, try Night mode and keep the phone steady; use Pro mode if you want manual exposure and focus controls.
- For a close-up, try Focus enhancer if available; avoid using an Ultra model’s telephoto camera at high zoom for a nearby subject.
