If your Galaxy camera says “Camera Failed,” will not open, freezes, lags, or shows no preview, start by restarting the device. Then reset the Camera app, check for updates, and use Safe mode to see whether a downloaded app is interfering. A factory reset is a last software step because it erases device data; if the camera still fails, arrange a professional diagnosis.
Samsung’s support guidance is for U.S. devices, and menu names and available features can vary by Galaxy model, software version, and region. Follow the labels available on your device rather than assuming every Galaxy has the same path.
Start with low-risk checks
Try these steps in order. Restarting and resetting the Camera app are relatively low-impact; Safe mode helps isolate app conflicts. Save a factory reset for persistent problems, and do not attempt hardware replacement without a diagnosis.
1. Restart your Galaxy device
Restart the phone or tablet, then open Camera and check whether the preview appears. A restart can clear a temporary system or app error. The button combination and power-menu steps vary by model, so use the restart instructions for your specific Galaxy device.

2. Reset Camera settings or clear Camera data
If Camera opens, use its settings to restore the app’s settings to their defaults. If it will not open, Samsung’s support instructions describe this path: Settings > Apps > Camera > Storage > Clear data. The wording or location may differ on your device.
Clearing Camera data resets the app’s settings; Samsung says it does not delete saved photos or videos. It is not the same as wiping the device. More generally, clearing an app’s data can remove personal settings or data saved within that app, so distinguish Camera’s settings from your media files. Samsung: Camera will not open on Samsung Galaxy device; Samsung: Clear the app cache and data on your Galaxy phone or tablet.

3. Check for Camera and device updates
Check for an update to the Camera app and install any available device software update. An internet connection is required to check for updates. Updates are a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that a particular camera problem will be fixed. Samsung: Issues with Camera app on Samsung phone or tablet.

Find out whether another app is interfering
Test the camera in Safe mode
Safe mode disables downloaded apps and loads the device’s original software. Start Safe mode using the instructions for your Galaxy model, then open Camera and test it.

- If the camera works in Safe mode: A downloaded app may be interfering. Exit Safe mode, uninstall recently added apps one at a time, and retest Camera after each removal.
- If the camera still fails in Safe mode: Downloaded apps may not be the cause. Continue with diagnostics and, if needed, service evaluation.

Run a camera diagnostic
If Samsung Members is installed on your device, open the app, go to Support, choose Phone diagnostics, and select Camera. Paths and availability can vary. The test can help check camera function, but it is not a repair or a definitive hardware diagnosis. Samsung: Camera will not open on Samsung Galaxy device.

Use a factory reset only as a last software step
Samsung lists a factory data reset as a later option when the problem persists. It erases device data and settings. Before proceeding, back up anything you want to keep and make sure you have the credentials needed to sign back into your accounts.
After the reset, test Camera before reinstalling downloaded apps. If it works before apps are restored but fails after reinstalling one, that may help identify an app conflict. Samsung’s Camera troubleshooting guidance includes factory reset as an option for continuing issues.

When to seek service
If “Camera Failed,” “Cannot launch Camera,” a frozen camera, or a blank preview persists after these checks, stop treating it as a routine app issue. Samsung says the camera module or internal circuitry may need inspection and recommends professional service diagnosis. Do not buy or replace a camera module based only on a generic symptom; the correct part and repair depend on the exact device and a confirmed fault.
Samsung’s support page puts the escalation plainly: “Please visit a Samsung service center for professional diagnosis and repair.” Samsung: Camera will not open on Samsung Galaxy device.
