Use Camera Assistant to change how Samsung’s normal Camera app behaves. Use Expert RAW when you want manual exposure and focus controls, specialist modes, and editable DNG files. They are complementary: Camera Assistant tunes everyday JPEG or HEIF shooting, while Expert RAW is a deliberate capture-and-edit workflow. If your Galaxy supports both, installing both gives you the broadest choice without replacing the stock camera.
What each app actually does
Camera Assistant changes the stock Camera app
Samsung describes Camera Assistant as an app that adds advanced settings while preserving the core Galaxy camera experience. It does not create a separate RAW camera. Instead, it changes the behavior, processing, controls, and available options inside Samsung’s regular Camera app.
That makes it the right tool when your complaint is about how the phone shoots automatically. You can alter autofocus behavior, shutter gestures, lens switching, HDR, image softening, preview behavior, and selected video options. The resulting files remain the normal outputs of the Camera app, such as JPEG or HEIF where supported, rather than automatically becoming DNG files.
Expert RAW is a manual capture and editing workflow
Expert RAW is a separate Samsung camera application for photographers who want to make exposure and focus decisions themselves and preserve more data for later editing. Samsung’s official support description says it provides greater control over the capture and editing of photos.
#1 Best Overall
- MULTIPLE TASKS WITH ONE ASK: Streamline your day with an assistant that gets you. Ask it to Google search for a pet-friendly vegan restaurant nearby and text it to your friend— your Galaxy S25+ handles multiple tasks with a single ask.¹
- START THE DAY SMARTER: Stay one step ahead with a phone that gives you the info you need before you even know you need it with Now Brief.²
- REDUCE THE NOISE. REVEAL THE MAGIC: AI Camera with Audio Eraser lets you capture vibrant videos in low light and minimize unwanted noises so you can relive your favorite moments with fewer distractions.³
- BRING OUT THE BEST IN EVERY FACE: Capture every portrait with clarity and confidence on the Galaxy S25+ Series. The advanced portrait features adjust skin tones and preserve natural textures, giving every shot a polished, professional look.
- MORE POWER TO YOU: Reimagine what’s possible with the Galaxy S25+, featuring our most powerful processor yet. Effortlessly translate your calls, slow down a video, or edit your photos without skipping a beat.
The app can record a DNG (RAW) file together with a JPEG, and it exposes manual ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, and focus controls. It also includes specialist functions such as Virtual Aperture, ND Filter, Multiple Exposure, and astrophotography with a Sky Guide on supported devices. Samsung’s Galaxy Store listing additionally describes expanded dynamic range, low-light processing, and Astro Portrait, while warning that availability differs by model and software version.
Why they are not substitutes
Camera Assistant answers, “How should the everyday camera operate?” Expert RAW answers, “How should I capture and preserve this particular photograph?” Camera Assistant can make the native camera faster, less processed, or easier to control, but it does not turn every automatic shot into a full RAW workflow. Expert RAW gives you manual and specialist capture, but it is not a replacement for every convenience setting in the standard Camera app.
Camera Assistant and Expert RAW side by side
| Decision axis | Camera Assistant | Expert RAW |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Customize the native Camera app’s behavior | Capture manual, editable RAW/DNG photographs |
| Typical file workflow | Normal Camera app outputs and modes | DNG plus JPEG, followed by RAW editing |
| Controls | Processing, shutter, focus, HDR, lens, video, and preview options | ISO, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, focus, and specialist modes |
| Best audience | Everyday shooters who want the stock camera tuned to their preferences | Enthusiasts and photographers who edit deliberately |
| Main limitation | Settings and features vary by Galaxy model and One UI version | Features vary by device, and RAW files require a compatible editor |
What Camera Assistant can change
The exact switches shown depend on the Galaxy model. Samsung’s Galaxy Store feature list includes the following groups of controls.
Focus, shutter, and lens behavior
- Autofocus speed and sensitivity: Adjust how aggressively the camera responds to a subject.
- Prioritize focus over speed: Favor a confirmed focus lock instead of taking a frame immediately. This can help when a sharp subject matters more than the fastest possible shutter response.
- Touch AF/AE in Pro video: On supported devices, touch the viewfinder to set focus and exposure points while recording Pro video.
- Focus peaking: Add an edge highlight that helps you judge manual focus in supported modes.
- Automatic lens switching: Change when the phone moves between its available lenses.
- Zoom shortcuts: Add or adjust quick access to supported zoom levels.
- Swipe or quick-tap shutter behavior: Change what a swipe or quick tap around the shutter control does, where the option is offered.
Image processing and resolution
- Photo softening: Reduce or change the processing that can make fine detail look overly smooth.
- Auto HDR: Control whether the native camera automatically applies high-dynamic-range processing.
- Distortion correction: Apply supported correction to lens-related geometric distortion.
- 24 MP and other resolution controls: Select additional resolutions on models that expose them.
- Mirror view: Change whether saved images follow the preview’s mirrored orientation.
Video, preview, and recording options
- Video recording in Photo mode: Add a supported video recording behavior without switching through the normal mode list.
- HDR10+: Enable supported HDR10+ video capture.
- Video softening: Adjust processing applied to video.
- Dim screen while recording: Reduce the display’s brightness during a recording session.
- 8K recording when mirroring: On compatible combinations of phone and display behavior, retain 8K recording while using screen mirroring.
- Preview timeout: Change how long a captured image remains visible in the preview.
- Indicator customization: Adjust supported on-screen indicators.
Modes, timers, and accessories
- Timer multi-photo options: Capture multiple frames when using the timer.
- Pro-mode presets: Save or use supported presets for Pro shooting.
- Additional modes: Expose extra camera modes where the model supports them.
- External-accessory controls: Use certain supported controls for connected accessories.
These options are model-dependent rather than a guaranteed checklist. A switch documented for one Galaxy may be absent on another, even when both phones run a similar One UI version.
What Expert RAW adds
Manual exposure and focus
Expert RAW lets you set ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, and focus instead of leaving every decision to automatic processing. Manual control is useful when the camera’s meter is being fooled by a bright window, a dark stage, a backlit subject, or a scene where you want a specific motion effect.
Exposure compensation can intentionally make a frame lighter or darker than the automatic result. Manual focus can keep the focus plane fixed for a night-sky sequence, a close subject, or a series of multiple exposures. Manual white balance helps keep a consistent color when several images will be combined or edited together.

DNG and JPEG capture
Expert RAW can save a DNG (RAW) and a JPEG at the same time. The DNG retains substantially more editing latitude than a finished compressed image, while the JPEG provides a ready-to-share version. Samsung Members lists the output as 16-bit Linear DNG (RAW) and JPEG in its 2026 capability documentation.
A DNG is not automatically a better-looking photograph. It is a less-final file that gives a compatible editor more room to recover highlights and shadows, adjust white balance, and refine contrast, color, and noise reduction. The final result still depends on exposure, subject movement, lens choice, the phone model, and the editor’s processing.
Specialist capture modes
- Astrophotography: Use supported long-duration workflows for stars and night-sky subjects.
- Sky Guide: On supported devices, identify or plan celestial subjects while setting up an astrophotography shot.
- Astro Portrait: Combine supported portrait and night-sky features on compatible models.
- ND Filter: Simulate or apply an ND-style workflow for controlled long-exposure effects where the device supports it.
- Multiple Exposure: Combine exposures creatively in-camera.
- Virtual Aperture: Adjust the app’s supported aperture simulation or depth effect.
Samsung also describes multi-frame HDR and improved low-light processing in Expert RAW. Those are capability descriptions, not a universal promise that Expert RAW will outperform the standard Camera app on every Galaxy, lens, or scene.
Which app should you use?
| Your priority | Choose first | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You mostly share JPEG or HEIF photos | Camera Assistant | Tune shutter behavior, focus, HDR, softening, lens switching, and other everyday settings without adding a RAW editing step. |
| You want faster or more reliable focus behavior | Camera Assistant | Use autofocus speed, sensitivity, focus priority, and focus-peaking options that your model exposes. |
| You want manual ISO, shutter, white balance, exposure, or focus | Expert RAW | Those controls are part of Expert RAW’s capture workflow. |
| You plan to edit seriously | Expert RAW | Save DNG plus JPEG and finish the DNG in a compatible RAW editor. |
| You photograph stars or plan long exposures | Expert RAW | Astrophotography, Sky Guide, ND Filter, and related specialist modes are designed for deliberate capture. |
| You dislike excessive processing in automatic photos | Camera Assistant | Photo softening, HDR, resolution, and lens-switching controls can change the stock camera’s rendering and behavior. |
| You want the broadest set of options | Both | Use Camera Assistant for daily shooting and Expert RAW only when the scene benefits from manual capture or a DNG. |
Compatibility: check the exact Galaxy and One UI version
Support is not uniform. Samsung changes the available switches by model, camera hardware, and software version, so the name of an app in the store does not guarantee that every feature will appear on your phone.
Camera Assistant support tiers
The current Galaxy Store listing accessed on 18 October 2026 places supported devices in several One UI tiers. The following examples are not an exhaustive model list:

| Older S20–S23, Note20, Fold, and Flip models | One UI 5.1 |
| Newer S26, Flip8, and Fold8 devices | One UI 9.0 tier |
Because Samsung can add or remove an option by device, check the Camera Assistant listing and the app’s own settings on your specific phone rather than assuming that a feature available on an S-series flagship is present on an A-series or foldable.

Expert RAW support
Samsung Members’ February 2026 support information lists Expert RAW for the Galaxy S22 through S26 series, Galaxy S20 Ultra and S21 Ultra, Galaxy S25 Edge, multiple Z Fold and Z Flip generations, Fold Special Edition, and TriFold. Samsung explicitly qualifies that list: individual features vary by device and software version.
For example, a phone can support the Expert RAW app but omit a particular astrophotography, Sky Guide, Astro Portrait, ND Filter, or Virtual Aperture function. Treat the app’s presence as a starting point, not proof that every mode is available.
How to install and open each app
Install and open Expert RAW
- Open the Samsung Camera app.
- Tap More and look for Expert RAW.
- If Expert RAW is not listed, Samsung says to download it free from the Galaxy Store.
- Open Expert RAW, grant any requested camera and storage permissions, and review the available controls for your model.
- Before an important shoot, confirm whether the app is saving DNG and JPEG, and check the available lens and specialist-mode buttons.
Install and open Camera Assistant
- Install Camera Assistant from the Galaxy Store or through Good Lock on a supported Galaxy.
- Open the Camera app and enter its settings.
- Select Camera Assistant from the supported camera-settings area.
- Change one setting at a time, then test it in the mode you actually use. A switch that affects Photo mode may not affect Pro video or another camera mode.
- Revisit the panel after a One UI update. Samsung can rename, move, add, or remove controls as the app and firmware change.
App names, icons, and menu positions can change after software updates. If a menu is missing, update the phone and app, verify the model’s support tier, and check the Galaxy Store listing again.
Practical workflows
Everyday family, travel, and food photos
Start with the normal Camera app and Camera Assistant. If moving subjects are missed, try focus speed or sensitivity changes and compare the result with the focus-priority option. If faces or food look unnaturally smooth, test photo softening. If the phone changes lenses at an inconvenient moment, review automatic lens switching and zoom shortcuts.
Keep the normal output for this workflow. It is faster to review and share, and it avoids filling storage with DNG files that you do not intend to edit.
Fast-moving subjects
Camera Assistant is the more direct first step when the problem is response time. Test shutter gestures, autofocus speed, and the trade-off between focus priority and immediate capture. Focus priority can reduce frames taken before focus is confirmed, while a speed-oriented setting can capture a fleeting moment at the risk of a soft frame.

Use the same lighting, subject distance, and lens while comparing settings. Changing several switches at once makes it difficult to identify which behavior helped.
High-contrast scenes
For a quick, ready-to-share frame, adjust Auto HDR or other processing controls in Camera Assistant. For a scene you intend to edit, Expert RAW gives you a DNG and manual exposure control. Protect important highlights while shooting, then make the final shadow, contrast, and color decisions in a compatible editor.
Night sky and long-exposure work
Use Expert RAW first. Select the supported astrophotography or ND-style mode, stabilize the phone, and set focus deliberately rather than relying on a moving autofocus target. Use Sky Guide when it is available on your model. Review a test frame before committing to a longer sequence, because a mode shown in the app may still be limited by the phone’s lens, firmware, or environmental conditions.
Multiple exposures and creative combinations
Expert RAW’s Multiple Exposure mode is intended for planned combinations. Keep the phone fixed, decide which element should dominate the final frame, and make each exposure consistent. Save the JPEG for a quick reference and retain the DNG when you want to refine the blend later.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Files, storage, and editing implications
Expert RAW’s simultaneous DNG and JPEG option gives you two versions of a photograph: a processed file that is easy to share and a larger, more flexible source for editing. Samsung’s cited pages do not publish a universal file-size figure, so the storage cost depends on your Galaxy model, resolution, scene, and capture settings. Expect a RAW workflow to consume more space than keeping only a compressed JPEG.

Plan a transfer and backup method before a long shoot. Copy DNG files to a computer or cloud service that preserves the original files, and avoid deleting the JPEG until you have checked that the DNG opens correctly in your chosen editor. A RAW-capable application is required; a basic gallery or messaging app may display only the embedded preview or the separate JPEG.

Use DNG when you have a reason to edit exposure, white balance, highlight recovery, shadow detail, color, or noise reduction. For routine snapshots that will not be edited, the normal Camera app output is usually the simpler workflow.
Common pitfalls and fixes
“The feature I read about is missing”
First check the exact Galaxy model and One UI version. Samsung publishes support by device, and Camera Assistant and Expert RAW both vary by hardware and firmware. Update the app and phone, then reopen the relevant settings. If the control is still absent, it may not be supported on that model.
“Expert RAW looks worse straight out of the phone”
A DNG is designed for editing and may look flatter or less finished than a processed JPEG. Compare the JPEG saved alongside it, then open the DNG in a compatible editor. Do not judge RAW capability solely by the unedited preview.
Recommended Free Tools
“RAW did not guarantee a sharper or cleaner image”
RAW preserves editing latitude; it does not remove camera shake, subject movement, missed focus, lens limitations, or noise. Stabilize the phone, choose an appropriate shutter speed, and confirm focus before blaming the file format.
“The phone is filling up quickly”
Saving DNG and JPEG doubles the number of files and normally uses more storage than JPEG alone. Turn off the RAW workflow for ordinary shooting, transfer completed projects, and keep only the file types you actually need.
“Changing Camera Assistant did not affect Expert RAW”
Camera Assistant is primarily a configuration layer for the native Camera app. Its switches may not carry over to Expert RAW, which has its own controls and specialist modes. Test a setting in the app and mode where you plan to use it.
“The camera behaves differently after an update”
Updates can change labels, menu positions, defaults, and model-specific availability. Recheck Camera Assistant settings and Expert RAW’s capture options after updating, especially before a planned event or night shoot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA simple decision checklist
- Choose Camera Assistant if you want the normal Camera app to focus differently, react faster, soften images less, switch lenses differently, or expose extra video and preview controls.
- Choose Expert RAW if you will set ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, or focus manually, or if you need DNG files for editing.
- Choose Expert RAW for supported astrophotography, Sky Guide, Astro Portrait, ND Filter, Multiple Exposure, or Virtual Aperture work.
- Install both when your Galaxy supports them: leave Camera Assistant configured for daily shooting and open Expert RAW only for scenes that justify manual capture and larger files.
- Before relying on a feature, verify your exact model, One UI version, and the controls actually shown in the app.
Bottom line
Camera Assistant is the better choice for tuning Samsung’s everyday camera; Expert RAW is the better choice for manual capture and editable DNG files. They solve different problems, so a supported Galaxy can benefit from both rather than treating one as an upgrade or replacement for the other.
