Google Gemini is the better primary assistant for most multilingual Galaxy users. Samsung documents Gemini on the Galaxy S25 in 46 languages, and Gemini is stronger for open-ended questions, translation-style conversations, and tasks that combine Google and Samsung apps. Bixby remains the better specialist for changing Galaxy settings, navigating the phone, and running Samsung-specific quick commands. On a current Galaxy phone, the most reliable arrangement is usually to keep both: Gemini for language-flexible conversations and Bixby for device control.

What “multilingual commands” actually covers

Comparing language support is not as simple as counting languages in a settings menu. An assistant can support a language for typed prompts while offering no hands-free wake word in that language. Voice recognition, wake-up detection, conversational replies, app actions, and phone-control commands can each have separate limits.

  • Typed prompts: You write a request in the assistant’s app or overlay.
  • Live conversation: You speak back and forth without issuing every request as a separate command.
  • Wake-word voice: You start with “Hey Google” or Bixby’s voice wake-up feature.
  • Device commands: You change settings, open screens, or control hardware such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the flashlight.
  • App actions: You ask the assistant to create a calendar entry, note, reminder, alarm, or other item.

A language may work in one of these modes and fail in another. That distinction explains why a user can chat with Gemini in a language that does not work with “Hey Google.”

Quick comparison

Capability Google Gemini Samsung Bixby
Documented language reach Samsung said Gemini was available in 46 languages at the Galaxy S25 launch in 2025. Samsung expands language support by model, region, and software update; Latin American Spanish was announced as an added option for Galaxy-device interaction.
Typed multilingual prompts Google says typed prompts can use any supported Gemini language. Uses the languages offered by Bixby on the specific Galaxy configuration.
Gemini Live or conversational voice Google says Gemini Live can understand and reply in any supported language. Voice interaction is tied to Bixby’s available language packs and recognition settings.
“Hey Google” and Voice Match Not available for every Gemini language. Google specifically excludes Bulgarian, Croatian, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, and Ukrainian from these hands-free features. Bixby has its own voice-wake setting and language availability; Samsung does not make every language and region combination universal.
Galaxy settings and navigation Can perform some actions, but Google warns that familiar Google Assistant features are still unsupported. Designed for Galaxy controls; newer One UI announcements describe natural-language navigation without requiring exact setting names.
Google and Samsung app actions On Galaxy S25, Google said Gemini can use Google services plus Samsung Calendar, Notes, Reminder, and Clock, subject to device, country, and language availability. Strongest for Samsung apps and device workflows, including quick commands that combine multiple actions.
Open-ended questions Generally the stronger choice for explanations, follow-up questions, translation-like dialogue, and mixed-language conversation. Useful for direct commands, but its main advantage is device operation rather than broad conversational answers.

Gemini’s multilingual support: broad, but mode-dependent

What Samsung documented at the Galaxy S25 launch

Samsung Electronics said in its 2025 Galaxy S25 announcement that Gemini was available at launch in 46 languages. That is the clearest official headline figure for the Galaxy integration, but it is not a promise that every one of those languages works with every voice feature. Availability can change by country, compatible device, and software version.

Why chat can work when “Hey Google” does not

Google’s Gemini language guidance separates configured language from broader language understanding. The configured language controls “Hey Google” and microphone behavior. Typed prompts and Gemini Live can understand and answer in any supported language, while hands-free wake-up and Voice Match have a narrower list.

Google explicitly lists Bulgarian, Croatian, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, and Ukrainian as unavailable for “Hey Google” and Voice Match with Gemini. If you speak one of those languages, you may still be able to type requests or start Gemini Live manually, but saying the wake phrase should not be treated as a guaranteed path.

What this means for two-language households

If you regularly alternate between, for example, English and another supported language, Gemini is usually the more flexible conversational option. You can type in either language and use Gemini Live where Google documents support. Hands-free operation may still follow the configured language rather than automatically recognizing every language you use.

For a bilingual user, test the exact combination you need: wake phrase, spoken prompt, reply language, and requested action. A successful bilingual chat does not prove that a bilingual wake word or device command will work.

Bixby’s multilingual role on a Galaxy phone

Its advantage is control, not a universal language count

Bixby is integrated into Samsung’s device layer. Samsung support documentation describes language customization, voice wake-up, quick commands that combine actions, an on-device mode, and feedback tools intended to improve recognition accuracy. These features make Bixby particularly useful when the result you want is a changed setting or a specific Galaxy screen.

Samsung’s One UI 8.5 announcement says Bixby can control and navigate Galaxy devices using natural language without requiring the exact setting name or a memorized command. Samsung Mobile eXperience COO Won-Joon Choi described the goal this way: “Since we introduced our first AI phone in 2024, we’ve been committed to making them easier to use so more people can benefit from AI — that’s why we decided to integrate a device agent directly into the experience.”

Language expansion is conditional

Samsung’s Latin American Spanish announcement illustrates the qualification that matters: the language was offered for interacting with Galaxy devices, but rollout depended on selected Galaxy models and software updates. The same pattern can apply to other Bixby languages. Check the language picker on the actual phone rather than assuming that a language announced for one model is present on every Galaxy device.

Samsung also cited more than 200 million Bixby users and nearly 400 million devices in that 2022 announcement. Those are historical figures from 2022, not a current user-count estimate and not evidence of command accuracy in any particular language.

Which assistant is better for changing phone settings?

Bixby is the safer first choice for Galaxy settings and device navigation. Its purpose is tightly connected to Samsung’s settings and hardware controls. It is the better fit when you want to turn a function on or off, open a particular settings page, adjust a phone option, or run a sequence of Galaxy actions.

Quick Commands are especially useful for repeated routines. A single phrase can combine actions, such as opening a work-related app, changing a device mode, and adjusting another setting. The exact actions available depend on the phone’s software and installed apps.

Gemini can carry out some device and app actions, but Google says Gemini is still learning and that some familiar Google Assistant features are not supported. If Gemini answers with instructions instead of changing the setting, switch to Bixby for that operation.

Can Gemini work with Samsung apps?

Yes, on supported Galaxy configurations. Google’s January 22, 2025 announcement said Gemini could use Google services and, on Galaxy S25, Samsung Calendar, Notes, Reminder, and Clock. Samsung also described Gemini actions such as adding information to Samsung Calendar.

These integrations are not universal guarantees. Google states that availability depends on compatible devices, countries, and languages. An action may therefore appear on one Galaxy model or account and be absent on another. When an action fails, verify that the relevant Samsung app is installed, updated, signed in, and available in your region.

Use Gemini when a request crosses ecosystems—for example, turning a conversation into a calendar entry, note, reminder, or clock action. Use Bixby when the request is primarily a phone-control routine.

Open-ended questions, translation, and conversation

Gemini for explanations and mixed-language dialogue

Gemini is the better match for questions that require context, follow-up, or reformulation. You can ask for an explanation in one language, request a shorter version in another, and continue the conversation without converting every turn into a rigid command. This is also where Gemini Live is useful when your language is supported for Live but not for hands-free wake-up.

A limitation: Interpreter mode is separate

Google states that Interpreter mode requires switching to Google Assistant. Do not assume that a Gemini conversation automatically supplies every legacy Assistant feature. If you need Interpreter mode specifically, follow the switch-to-Google-Assistant path shown on your phone.

Bixby for concise operational requests

Bixby can understand natural-language device requests, but its strongest results are operational: open, turn on, turn off, change, call, remind, or run this routine. It is not the better default for a long explanation or an exploratory multilingual conversation.

How to choose by language and task

Your situation Start with Reason
You ask questions in two languages and want follow-up dialogue. Gemini Typed prompts and Gemini Live have the broadest documented conversational behavior.
Your language is not listed for Gemini “Hey Google” or Voice Match. Gemini manually, or Gemini Live Google documents broader support for typed prompts and Live than for hands-free wake-up.
You need to change a Galaxy setting or open a device-control screen. Bixby Its integration is focused on Samsung settings and navigation.
You want one request to create or update a Samsung and Google workflow. Gemini first On supported Galaxy S25 setups, Gemini can connect Google services with Samsung Calendar, Notes, Reminder, and Clock.
You want a repeatable multi-action Galaxy routine. Bixby Quick Commands Quick Commands are designed to combine actions under one phrase.
You need Interpreter mode. Google Assistant Google says Interpreter mode requires switching away from Gemini.

Set up a practical two-assistant workflow

1. Confirm the phone and software

  1. Identify the Galaxy model, country or region, Android version, and One UI version.
  2. Install pending system and assistant updates from the phone’s software-update screen and app store.
  3. Confirm that Gemini, Bixby, Google Assistant, and the Samsung apps you want to control are installed and signed in.

2. Configure Gemini for your conversation language

  1. Open Gemini’s settings and choose the language you want associated with microphone and “Hey Google” behavior.
  2. Test a typed prompt in each language you use.
  3. Start Gemini Live manually and test spoken questions in those languages.
  4. Test a real app action, such as creating a calendar entry or note, rather than assuming that conversational support includes actions.

3. Configure Bixby for device control

  1. Open Bixby settings and select a language offered on your phone.
  2. Enable voice wake-up if your language and region support it, then complete the voice-registration process.
  3. Create a Quick Command for a routine you perform repeatedly.
  4. Use Bixby’s feedback option when recognition fails so the service can record the correction.
  5. Check whether the task works in on-device mode if privacy, connectivity, or response speed is important.

4. Assign each assistant a clear job

Use Gemini for multilingual questions, summaries, translation-like exchanges, and cross-app requests. Use Bixby for settings, device navigation, and Samsung routines. Keeping the roles distinct reduces the chance that an assistant gives instructions when you expected it to perform an action.

Regional, device, and software limits to check

  • Model: A feature announced for Galaxy S25 may not be present on an older Galaxy phone.
  • Country: Google and Samsung can release languages and app actions by market.
  • Language mode: Typed, Live, microphone, wake word, and Voice Match support can differ.
  • Software version: One UI and app updates can add or remove controls.
  • Account and app state: Cross-app actions may require the right account, installed app, permissions, and current sign-in.
  • Connectivity: Cloud-based conversational features may behave differently from Bixby’s documented on-device mode.

These checks matter more than a headline language count. Before recommending one assistant to someone else, reproduce the specific language-and-task combination on that person’s phone.

Troubleshooting multilingual command failures

The assistant understands typed text but not speech

Check whether the language is supported for microphone use and wake-up, not merely for typed prompts. Set the configured language explicitly, retrain voice recognition where offered, and try starting the assistant manually instead of using the wake phrase.

“Hey Google” does not respond in your language

Compare your language with Google’s hands-free exclusions. If it is one of the listed languages, use typed prompts or start Gemini Live manually. This is a feature limitation, not proof that Gemini cannot understand the language in conversation.

Gemini answers but does not change a setting

Try the same request with Bixby, which is designed for Galaxy controls. Also verify that the requested action is supported on your model and software version.

A Samsung app action is missing

Confirm that the phone is a compatible model, the country and language are eligible, the Samsung app is updated and signed in, and the required permissions are granted. Google’s stated availability conditions cover all of these dimensions, so success on another phone is not a guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bixby repeatedly misrecognizes a command

Use the language selected in Bixby settings, speak the command in the form used by the installed software, and submit recognition feedback. For a frequent multi-step task, create a Quick Command instead of relying on a long improvised sentence.

Is there an official accuracy winner?

No official controlled head-to-head benchmark establishes multilingual command accuracy between Bixby and Gemini. There are no defensible win rates, latency figures, accent scores, or universal language rankings to report. The practical distinction is based on documented capabilities: Gemini has broader conversational and cross-app reach, while Bixby has deeper Galaxy-device control.

Verdict

Choose Gemini as the primary assistant if your priority is switching between languages, asking follow-up questions, translating or rephrasing information, and connecting Google services with supported Samsung apps. Choose Bixby first for Galaxy settings, device navigation, and Samsung-specific routines.

The best answer for most multilingual Galaxy owners is not to uninstall one assistant. Keep Gemini available for language-rich conversation and Bixby available for commands that must change the phone. Recheck language, country, model, and software support after major updates, because those conditions determine which assistant can perform the exact command you speak.
