Samsung Bespoke AI and LG ThinQ are both connected-appliance ecosystems, not single products. Samsung’s advantage is the wider SmartThings home platform, with cross-device routines and an AI Energy Mode on compatible appliances. LG’s advantage is the ThinQ app’s appliance-focused controls, downloadable cycles, usage reports and proactive diagnostics. Neither is demonstrably cheaper to run in every household: electricity cost depends on the exact model, capacity, energy rating, usage pattern and local tariff.
This comparison explains what each platform actually does, where features are limited by model or country, and how to calculate a defensible running-cost result before you buy.
Samsung Bespoke AI vs LG ThinQ: the short verdict
Choose Samsung Bespoke AI when you want appliances to participate in a broader connected-home setup. Compatible refrigerators, washers and other products can be controlled in Samsung SmartThings, combined into routines and monitored through SmartThings Energy. Samsung also advertises AI Energy Mode for selected refrigerators.
Choose LG ThinQ when your priority is a single, appliance-centred app with remote controls, cycle downloads, status notifications, usage reports and maintenance support. ThinQ can also provide voice control through compatible assistants.

What Samsung Bespoke AI and SmartThings do
One control layer for compatible Samsung appliances
Samsung’s Bespoke AI appliances use the SmartThings app for remote management, routines and diagnostics when the appliance is compatible, connected to Wi-Fi and registered to a Samsung account. SmartThings can combine appliance actions with other supported devices, so a routine can coordinate more than one product instead of treating each appliance as an isolated gadget.
Samsung describes Home Appliance Remote Management as continuous monitoring that can support predictive diagnostics and remote issue resolution. The service is not a promise that every fault can be fixed remotely; the available diagnostics and actions depend on the appliance model, software and local service support.

Samsung says AI Energy Mode optimizes a compatible refrigerator’s compressor speed and defrost cycles and can cut energy use by up to 10% under Samsung’s stated comparison conditions. That is a conditional manufacturer claim, not a guaranteed reduction in your electricity bill. A refrigerator’s actual consumption is affected by ambient temperature, door openings, temperature settings, food load, installation clearances and the local electricity price.
Check the exact refrigerator specification to confirm that AI Energy Mode is included. “Bespoke AI” is a family name covering multiple models and regions; the presence of the Bespoke or AI branding alone does not establish that a particular energy feature is available.
SmartThings Energy and demand response
SmartThings Energy displays household energy information and can support eligible demand-response programs. Samsung describes Flex Connect as a way for eligible users to adjust consumption during periods of high demand. Eligibility depends on location, utility arrangements and compatible equipment, so it should be treated as an optional service rather than a universal appliance function.
Samsung’s UK description says SmartThings Energy can show monthly appliance usage and expected electricity fees and can automatically apply energy-saving options when a user sets a target. Samsung also warns that displayed usage and cost may differ from actual usage and cost. Some target-setting environments may require a smart meter. The dashboard is therefore useful for spotting trends, but it is not a replacement for a utility bill or a calibrated whole-home meter.

What LG ThinQ does
Remote operation and status in one app
LG describes ThinQ as one app for compatible refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, washers and other appliances. Depending on the product, you can check status, start or monitor a cycle remotely, receive notifications and use voice control through a compatible assistant. Remote starting may be restricted by safety rules or a physical control on the appliance; the app cannot override every local lockout.
Downloadable cycles and cooking support
ThinQ can provide downloadable cycles for supported washers and other appliances. An oven may receive cooking instructions through the app, while a washer can gain a cycle that was not installed as a default option. Downloadable content is model-specific, and an app catalogue can differ by country, language and software version.
Usage reports, care reminders and Smart Diagnosis
LG’s ThinQ platform lists usage reports, water-filter reminders, proactive maintenance alerts and Smart Diagnosis on selected products. These tools can help you identify a clogged filter, an overdue maintenance task or a symptom worth reporting to service. They do not guarantee that a diagnosis is complete: a technician may still need to inspect the appliance, and the available tests depend on the model.

Ecosystem breadth
SmartThings is designed as a broader home-automation layer. If you already use compatible sensors, switches or other SmartThings devices, an appliance can become part of routines such as an “away” scene or an energy-saving schedule. This breadth adds flexibility but also adds setup dependencies: the routine only works when every participating device, account permission and network connection is available.
ThinQ is more concentrated on LG appliances. That narrower scope can be easier to understand if you mainly want appliance status, cycle control and maintenance information, but it offers less reason to standardize a mixed-brand smart home around the app itself.
App controls and notifications
| Capability | SmartThings on compatible Samsung appliances | ThinQ on compatible LG appliances |
|---|---|---|
| Remote monitoring | Yes, subject to model, Wi-Fi and account support | Yes, subject to model, region and app version |
| Remote operation | Available on supported appliances and functions | Available on supported appliances and functions, with safety restrictions |
| Routines or automation | SmartThings routines can coordinate supported home devices | Primarily appliance-focused controls; broader automation depends on compatible integrations |
| Downloadable cycles | Not established as a universal Bespoke AI feature; verify the model | Listed for selected products |
| Usage reports | SmartThings Energy provides usage and estimated-cost views where supported | Usage reports are available on selected products |
| Voice control | Depends on SmartThings-compatible voice integrations | Available through compatible voice assistants on supported products |
| Diagnostics | Home Appliance Remote Management and model-specific diagnostics | Smart Diagnosis and proactive maintenance alerts on selected products |
Energy transparency
SmartThings Energy puts more emphasis on household energy management, including estimated fees, target setting and demand-response participation where available. ThinQ’s emphasis is appliance operation and care; energy reporting exists for selected products but is not a guaranteed feature across every washer, refrigerator or dishwasher.
Neither dashboard should be read as a meter reading unless the product and installation provide that measurement. Samsung explicitly describes its displayed costs as estimates that may differ from actual costs. For LG, first confirm that usage reporting is supported by the exact model and region, then compare the report with your utility data.
Diagnostics and maintenance
Samsung’s Home Appliance Remote Management is intended to monitor a connected appliance and support predictive diagnostics or remote resolution. LG’s Smart Diagnosis is intended to help identify problems, while ThinQ care features can issue reminders and alerts. Both approaches can reduce the information you need to provide when contacting support, but neither removes the need for cleaning, filter replacement, safe installation or professional repair.
Do Samsung AI appliances really save electricity?
Samsung’s published statement is that AI Energy Mode can reduce a compatible refrigerator’s energy use by up to 10% under its comparison conditions. The phrase “up to” describes a maximum observed under Samsung’s method, not an expected result for every home. It also refers to energy use, not directly to the amount on your bill.
Your bill impact is calculated from energy saved and your tariff. For example, if a refrigerator used 400 kilowatt-hours per year and a feature genuinely reduced that use by 10%, the saving would be 40 kilowatt-hours. At an illustrative tariff of £0.30 per kilowatt-hour, that would equal £12 per year. Those figures are examples of the calculation only; they are not a measurement of any particular Samsung model.
Do not assume that an AI label guarantees lower consumption than every LG refrigerator. A larger refrigerator with a different energy rating, installation condition or usage pattern can consume more or less than a smaller model from either brand. Compare the official energy label and annual consumption for matched capacities.

How to compare running costs fairly
1. Match the appliances
Compare like with like: refrigerator against refrigerator, washer against washer, or washer-dryer against washer-dryer. Match capacity, configuration and relevant programme type. Comparing a large American-style refrigerator with a compact bottom-freezer model will produce a misleading ecosystem verdict.

- BEVERAGE CENTER: Quick access to refreshingly cool, filtered water two ways. Choose from an internal dispenser or a built-in pitcher that automatically refills, with the option to infuse with a flavor.
- DUAL ICE MAKER WITH ICE BITES: Enjoy your favorite beverage with your choice of ice. Select from cubed ice or Ice Bites that chill your drink faster.
- FLEXZONE DRAWER: The FlexZone Drawer is customizable with 5 different temperature settings. From french door refrigerator to soft freeze, this middle drawer can store everything from fruit and vegetables to your favorite meat & seafood.
- MODERN DESIGN: Flat panel door design with easy-to-open recessed handles blends into your cabinetry to give you a modern built-in-look.
- WiFi CONNECTIVITY: Wi-Fi connectivity on your fridge isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s essential for safety and energy conservation. You’ll get immediate notifications if the temperature drops due to a power outage or if you accidentally leave the door open.
2. Record the official consumption figure
Use the exact model number’s energy label or manufacturer specification for your market. Note whether the figure is annual consumption, consumption per 100 cycles, consumption per cycle or another test value. Keep the unit unchanged until the calculation stage.
3. State usage assumptions
- For refrigerators, record ambient-temperature assumptions, temperature settings and whether the figure is an annual test value.
- For washers and dishwashers, state cycles per week, programme, temperature, load size and drying option.
- For connected products, include expected standby time and whether remote features remain enabled.
- For washer-dryers, separate washing and drying assumptions because drying can dominate total consumption.
4. Apply the local tariff
For an annual figure, use:
Annual energy cost = annual consumption in kWh × electricity price per kWh.
For a per-cycle figure, multiply by expected cycles per year first. Add any standing-charge or time-of-use effects only when they are genuinely attributable to the appliance; do not allocate a whole household standing charge to one product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Add ownership costs
Total cost of ownership includes purchase price, delivery and installation, electricity, water where relevant, filters and other consumables, warranty or service costs, and the period you expect to keep the appliance. A connected model can cost more upfront while saving time through diagnostics, but convenience has value only if you use the features and the service remains supported.
6. Validate app estimates
Use SmartThings Energy or ThinQ reports to identify changes in behaviour and unusual consumption. Compare several billing periods with your utility statement. A dashboard estimate can be affected by incomplete model data, tariff settings, network outages or a mismatch between assumed and actual cycles.
No independent, like-for-like Samsung-versus-LG running-cost study is established by the cited official material. The defensible conclusion is therefore model-specific, not a percentage winner for one ecosystem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setup checklist for SmartThings
- Confirm that the appliance model supports SmartThings, the required Wi-Fi band and your country’s service.
- Install the current SmartThings app, create or sign in to a Samsung account and enable the permissions the app requests.
- Put the appliance into network-pairing mode using the model’s manual, then add it in SmartThings.
- Complete firmware updates before testing routines or energy features.
- Name the appliance clearly and assign it to the correct room so notifications and routines are understandable.
- Open SmartThings Energy and verify that the appliance appears. Enter tariff information only if the app requests it, and treat the resulting fee as an estimate.
- Test a notification, remote status check and any routine while you are at home. Do not depend on remote control for a safety-critical action.
Setup checklist for LG ThinQ
- Verify ThinQ support, regional availability and the required Wi-Fi specification for the exact LG model.
- Install the current ThinQ app, create or sign in to an LG account and accept the pairing prompts.
- Enable the appliance’s Wi-Fi or ThinQ mode according to its manual, then add it from the app.
- Install firmware updates and check whether the app offers downloadable cycles or cooking content for your model.
- Set notification preferences for cycle completion, maintenance and diagnostic alerts.
- Run Smart Diagnosis or open the care section once so you know where to find it before a fault occurs.
- Confirm that remote-start safety requirements are met; some products require a physical button press or a closed door before remote operation is permitted.
Common problems and fixes
The appliance will not pair
- Check that the phone and appliance are on the required Wi-Fi network and that the router is not isolating smart-home devices.
- Move the appliance or router temporarily to improve signal strength, then retry pairing.
- Update the app and appliance firmware, restart both, and repeat the model-specific pairing sequence.
- Confirm that the model is sold in your country and that the account region matches the appliance region.
Remote control or routines stop working
- Check whether the appliance is offline, in a safety lockout or waiting for a physical confirmation.
- Review account permissions and routine conditions; a changed room name, schedule or device state can prevent a routine from firing.
- Use the appliance locally until connectivity is restored. Do not repeatedly start a cycle remotely if you cannot verify the door, load or water supply.
The energy cost looks wrong
- Check the tariff, currency, billing period and whether the app has complete data for the appliance.
- Compare the dashboard with the utility meter over multiple periods rather than one day.
- Remember that Samsung labels displayed usage and fees as estimates, and LG reporting is model-specific.
A diagnostic alert appears
- Read the model’s on-screen instructions and perform only the safe checks it requests, such as cleaning a filter or confirming a water supply.
- Record the error code, appliance model and symptom before contacting service.
- Do not remove panels or bypass electrical, door or temperature safety controls.
Privacy, reliability and long-term support
Connected appliances add accounts, cloud services, Wi-Fi credentials and usage data to a product that would otherwise work locally. Use a unique account password, enable multi-factor authentication when offered, keep the app and appliance firmware current, and place smart appliances on a separated guest or IoT network if your router supports one.
Plan for local operation if the internet or a cloud service is unavailable. Washing, cooling and cooking functions should remain usable through the appliance controls, but remote notifications, routines, usage dashboards and diagnostics may not work during an outage. Before buying, check how long the manufacturer commits to app and firmware support for the exact model; a connected feature has less value if support ends during the appliance’s service life.
Which ecosystem should you buy?
Choose Samsung Bespoke AI and SmartThings if:
- You already use SmartThings and want appliance routines with other compatible home devices.
- Energy targets, estimated fees or demand-response participation are important to you and available in your region.
- You are comparing refrigerators where the compatible AI Energy Mode claim is relevant, and you understand that “up to 10%” is conditional.
- You prefer a broader home platform over an appliance-only app.
Choose LG ThinQ if:
- You want downloadable cycles, appliance status and maintenance reminders in one focused app.
- Usage reports and Smart Diagnosis are available on the specific LG models you are considering.
- You use compatible voice assistants and want voice access to supported appliance functions.
- Your household is primarily buying LG appliances and does not need a cross-brand home-automation layer.
Choose by the appliance, not the logo, if:
- The models have different capacities, energy labels or drying systems.
- A feature you need is listed only for selected models or a different country.
- The connected service is useful but the underlying appliance has weaker noise, repairability, warranty or performance characteristics.
For a final decision, write down the exact model numbers, verify every required app feature, calculate annual energy cost with your tariff, and include consumables and service assumptions. That process produces a result you can defend; declaring SmartThings or ThinQ universally cheaper cannot.
