Choose Samsung The Frame when you need a full-size television that can become wall art between shows. Choose a dedicated digital art or photo frame when displaying images is the main job and television features would be unnecessary cost and complexity. The right choice depends on what the screen must do, how large it needs to be, how you will supply artwork, and whether you accept a recurring catalog fee.
Samsung’s Art Store gives The Frame an on-demand catalog, while Art Mode can also display selected free works and your own images. Dedicated frames are a separate category with different sizes, software, finishes and subscription rules; no single standalone model is established here, so evaluate the exact model sold in your region rather than assuming every “digital canvas” works the same way.
Quick answer: television first or art first?
| If your priority is… | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One large screen for television and art | Samsung The Frame | Art Mode turns a supported TV into an artwork display when you are not watching television. |
| A curated art catalog with optional subscription | Samsung The Frame | The US Art Store subscription is listed at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year for on-demand access to more than 5,000 works. Select free works are also available. |
| Your own photos as the main content | Either category | Samsung supports transfer through SmartThings or USB; dedicated frames vary by app, cloud service, USB support and account requirements. |
| A display whose only purpose is art or photos | Dedicated digital frame | You avoid paying for TV hardware and can choose a product designed around image rotation, portrait orientation or a smaller footprint. |
| Another TV-plus-art platform to compare | Hisense CanvasTV, where sold | Hisense Australia lists Art Mode, a Hi-Matte display, VIDAA Smart TV, more than 1,000 artworks after free VIDAA account sign-in and personal-photo upload through the VIDAA app. |
Do not treat the categories as direct substitutes at every size. The Frame is a television product with an art function; a dedicated frame is an image product. Compare the complete workflow—installation, content, controls and ongoing fees—not only the picture on the wall.

The TV becomes an artwork display when idle
Art Mode is Samsung’s operating mode for showing artwork while The Frame is not being used as a television. Samsung says Art Mode is available on The Frame TVs and on the OLED S95H, with support varying by model year and region. Art Mode availability and Art Store availability are not identical: a television may support one without offering every catalog feature. Confirm both for the exact model number in your country before purchase.

A motion sensor can wake or dim the display according to room activity, and Samsung describes brightness and color tone that respond to ambient conditions. Those are manufacturer-described functions, not an independent glare or image-quality test. Placement, nearby windows and lighting still determine how convincing an artwork looks in your room.
The Art Store is optional, not the entire Art Mode experience
For US customers, Samsung lists the Art Store at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year. The subscription provides on-demand access to more than 5,000 works, according to Samsung’s US Art Store information accessed October 13, 2026. Samsung also says select artwork is free and that personal photos can be shown without paying for the premium catalog.
Samsung Newsroom US said in its 2026 announcement that the catalog contained more than 5,000 works from over 800 artists. It also described Art Store Streams as 30 curated artworks refreshed each month—more than 350 pieces across a year. These are Samsung’s stated catalog counts, not an independently audited inventory; the available selection can change by country, model generation and account terms.

Screen sizes for a television-sized installation
Samsung’s 2026 announcement lists The Frame range from 55 inches to a 98-inch model. The large sizes can fill a wall like a conventional television, which is useful when the screen must be visible from a sofa or serve as the household’s primary TV. A dedicated frame may be a better physical fit for a hallway, bedroom or small wall, but its practical size and aspect ratio depend entirely on the model.
| The Frame size | Announced US 2026 launch price | How to interpret the figure |
|---|---|---|
| 55-inch | $1,199.99 | Samsung Newsroom US announcement price; not a current sale quote. |
| 65-inch | $1,499.99 | Samsung Newsroom US announcement price; not a current sale quote. |
| 98-inch | $4,499.99 | Listed top-end price in the same announcement; availability and regional pricing require local verification. |
The announcement also describes interchangeable bezel options and identifies Deco TV Frames as a compatible-bezel partner. Treat a bezel as a separate accessory: verify the exact television size, model generation, finish and whether the bezel is sold separately before budgeting for it.
What the price does and does not include
The launch figures cover the announced television pricing, not a guarantee of today’s retail price, delivery, installation, a decorative bezel or an Art Store subscription. Sale pricing can differ, and prices outside the United States should not be converted from these figures as if they were local offers. For a realistic budget, separate the TV, mounting or installation, optional bezel and any recurring catalog fee.

Artwork and personal photos on The Frame
Using Samsung’s catalog
The paid catalog is useful if you want to change the look of a room without finding, formatting and transferring images yourself. You can browse the works available to your account and select pieces for Art Mode. Because catalog rights and availability can change, check the current terms shown on the television or Samsung account in your region rather than assuming that a work listed elsewhere will be offered to you.

Showing your own images without the premium subscription
Samsung documents two routes for personal images: transfer through the SmartThings app or load them by USB. The company also describes artistic effects and slideshow presentation. This means a family-photo rotation, travel images or your own digital artwork can be the main display without paying for the full catalog.
- Prepare the files. Use high-resolution images with a crop that suits the television’s landscape orientation. Keep an original copy; artistic effects and resizing can change the display version.
- Choose a transfer method. In SmartThings, add the compatible television and use its Art Mode or photo-upload controls. With USB, copy the images to a compatible drive, connect it to the television and follow the on-screen import path.
- Set the presentation. Select a single image, slideshow or an available artistic effect. Adjust the display period or motion behavior if the model exposes those controls.
- Check the result in the room. Look at the image in both daylight and evening light. A crop that looked correct on a phone may cut off faces or important edges on a wall-mounted screen.
Menu names can vary by model year and software version. If SmartThings does not show an Art Mode control, confirm that the television supports Art Mode, that the app and television are signed into compatible accounts and that the model is sold with the feature in your region.
Dedicated digital art frames: what you gain and what you must verify
A dedicated digital art or photo frame is designed around displaying images rather than replacing a television. It can be the cleaner choice when the screen will rarely show broadcast or streaming video, or when you need a smaller display for a particular wall. However, “digital art frame” is a category, not a single specification. The exact model determines nearly every buying decision.
Size, orientation and placement
- Measure the wall and the viewing distance before shopping. A frame intended for a bedside table is not a substitute for a 65-inch living-room display.
- Check whether the product supports portrait, landscape or automatic rotation. A portrait-first workflow can matter more than diagonal size for photography.
- Confirm mounting hardware, cable routing and whether the unit can sit flush to the wall. A visible power cable can undermine the framed-art effect.
- Look for a stated matte or anti-glare finish if the wall faces a window. Do not infer glare performance from marketing photos.
Display technology and finish
Ask for the panel type, resolution, brightness behavior and surface finish. A matte coating may reduce reflections but can alter perceived contrast; a glossy panel may look more saturated while reflecting lamps and windows. No independent head-to-head measurement establishes that a generic dedicated frame is better or worse than The Frame for color, glare, energy use or longevity.

How images reach the frame
Read the exact upload workflow before buying. Possibilities include a phone app, cloud library, USB storage, a web dashboard or a combination. Check whether the frame requires an account, whether family members can contribute, how many images it stores locally and what happens if the vendor’s cloud service changes. A frame that accepts only a proprietary cloud path may be less convenient for an offline photo archive than one with USB import.

(Note: There is no time limit for uploading videos via SD card/USB, but the Frameo app only allows uploading 15-second videos)
Art libraries and recurring fees
Some dedicated frames include a built-in library, while others expect you to supply every image. Verify the number of included works, the rights to use them, update frequency, regional restrictions and whether a subscription is required. The terms of a dedicated frame’s library cannot be assumed to match Samsung’s $4.99 monthly or $49.99 annual US Art Store pricing.
| Question to ask about a dedicated frame | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|
| Is a catalog included, and how large is it? | Determines whether the frame is ready to use or depends on your own collection. |
| Is a subscription required? | Changes the long-term cost even if the hardware is cheaper. |
| Can you upload by app and USB? | Gives you a fallback if an account, phone or cloud service is unavailable. |
| Does it support your preferred orientation and crop? | Prevents portraits, panoramas or square images from being awkwardly cropped. |
| What are the local warranty and replacement options? | A wall-mounted display is difficult to treat as disposable if support is limited. |
| What are the exact regional model number and price? | Features and services often differ by country; category names are not enough. |
No specific standalone frame model was verified for this comparison, so there is no responsible model-level price or specification table to substitute for those checks.
Hisense CanvasTV as a like-for-like TV alternative
Hisense CanvasTV is relevant if you want the television-plus-art combination but prefer to compare another manufacturer’s platform. The cited product information is from Hisense Australia and must be read as Australia-specific. It lists Art Mode, a Hi-Matte display, VIDAA Smart TV, a motion detector for Art Mode, access to more than 1,000 artworks after a free VIDAA account sign-in and personal-photo upload through the VIDAA app.
Hisense Australia’s model numbers and quoted prices should not be carried into the United States or another market without checking local listings. The available evidence here does not establish US pricing, regional catalog terms or a direct picture-quality advantage over The Frame. Treat CanvasTV as a platform to investigate locally, not as proof that one brand handles reflections, color or value better.
| Feature | Samsung The Frame | Hisense CanvasTV (Australia information) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Television with Art Mode | VIDAA Smart TV with Art Mode |
| Art access | US Art Store: over 5,000 works with a paid plan; select free works also available | More than 1,000 works after free VIDAA account sign-in, according to Hisense Australia |
| Personal photos | SmartThings or USB transfer; slideshow and artistic effects described by Samsung | Upload through the VIDAA app, according to Hisense Australia |
| Ambient/display claims | Ambient-responsive brightness and color tone; motion sensor described by Samsung | Hi-Matte display and motion detector described by Hisense Australia |
| Regional pricing in the cited material | US 2026 announcement prices listed above | Australian pricing and model numbers; do not assume availability elsewhere |
Cost comparison over time
The most visible price is the hardware purchase, but an art display also has content and accessory costs. Samsung’s US subscription is recurring; the annual option costs $49.99, compared with $4.99 for each monthly billing period. That is a catalog-access charge, not a requirement for using every Art Mode function.
- Samsung hardware: use the announced 55-inch, 65-inch or 98-inch US launch figures only as reference points, then check the current local price.
- Catalog: budget $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year in the United States if you want the premium Art Store access; select free art and personal photos do not require that payment.
- Customization: add the cost of a compatible bezel if you want a furniture-like frame appearance. Confirm model and size compatibility.
- Dedicated frame: calculate the device price plus any app, cloud-storage or art-library fee shown for the exact model. A reliable category-level total is not established without selecting a model.
- Installation: include mounting, cable management and professional installation when the screen is large or difficult to lift safely.
For a fair comparison, use a time horizon such as three years and add hardware, subscription, accessories and installation for each candidate. Do not compare Samsung’s launch announcement price with an unknown dedicated-frame sale price or with Australian pricing from another market.

Which option fits common home situations?
You are replacing an aging living-room TV
Start with The Frame or another art-capable TV. You get one large screen for streaming and television, then use Art Mode when the room is not in viewing use. The decision turns on whether the visual effect and Samsung’s content workflow justify the TV price and any optional catalog fee.
You already own a good TV
A dedicated frame can make more sense because you are not paying for a second television. Check whether the wall has enough light control, whether the frame can be powered cleanly and whether its upload process is convenient for the people who will actually manage the images.
You primarily display family photos
Compare the friction of adding and removing photos. Samsung’s SmartThings and USB routes are documented options, while a dedicated frame may offer automatic cloud albums or may require a proprietary app. Choose the system that gives the household a simple backup path and clear control over who can upload.
You want museum-style art with minimal maintenance
Samsung’s catalog and Art Store Streams can provide a rotating selection without curating every image yourself. A dedicated frame can work equally well only if its included library, licensing and update schedule meet your expectations; verify those terms rather than relying on the product category name.
You live outside the United States
Check the local model number, Art Mode support, Art Store availability, subscription currency and catalog before ordering. Samsung states that features vary by model year and region. The Hisense details cited here are Australian, so they do not establish what is sold or supported in another country.

- Define the job. Write down whether the screen must replace a TV, supplement one or display only art and photos.
- Measure the wall and viewing distance. Eliminate sizes that will look too small, dominate the room or require unsafe installation.
- Verify the exact regional model. Confirm Art Mode, Art Store access, motion behavior, app support and included accessories on the manufacturer’s page for your country.
- Price the complete system. Add hardware, mounting, bezel, installation and any recurring art or cloud fee.
- Test the content path before discarding originals. Confirm that your photos transfer, crop and display as expected through the intended app or USB method.
- Inspect the room’s lighting. Identify windows and lamps that could create reflections; seek a stated matte or anti-glare specification when that matters.
- Plan account ownership. Use an account the household can access, document the login and understand what happens to purchased or uploaded content if the service changes.
- Recheck return and support terms. Large wall-mounted displays are costly to ship, and regional service coverage can differ.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Samsung TV has the same art features
Samsung says Art Mode is available on The Frame TVs and OLED S95H, with availability varying by model year and region. Verify the feature list for the exact television; do not infer it from a similarly named model.

Budgeting for the subscription as if it were mandatory
The US premium Art Store plan is optional. Select free artwork and personal-photo display are available without paying for the full catalog, according to Samsung’s FAQ and support information.
Comparing an announced price with a current price
The $1,199.99, $1,499.99 and $4,499.99 figures are announced US 2026 launch prices. They are not promises of today’s sale price, and they say nothing about another country’s taxes, bundles or availability.
Assuming matte means reflection-free
Samsung and Hisense describe their respective ambient or matte features, but those claims are not independent laboratory results. Visit the display in similar lighting or buy from a retailer with a practical return policy if reflections are critical.

Choosing a dedicated frame without checking the app
An attractive panel is not enough if uploads are slow, require a paid cloud account or cannot handle your preferred image orientation. Confirm the workflow with the people who will maintain the collection.
Bottom-line decision
Buy Samsung The Frame when your home needs a television-sized screen and you value switching between normal TV viewing and curated or personal artwork. Its Art Store is a paid US option at $4.99 monthly or $49.99 annually, but Art Mode, select free works and your own photos provide ways to use the display without that subscription.
Choose a dedicated digital art frame when art and photos—not television—are the primary purpose. Select by verified size, finish, upload method, library terms, subscription, warranty and local availability. If you want a second TV-plus-art platform, investigate Hisense CanvasTV in the market where you live, remembering that the cited features and pricing information are specific to Australia.
