You can noticeably improve Samsung Galaxy A23 photos without replacing the phone: clean the lens, use the main camera at a sensible distance, tap the subject to focus, add light, and keep the phone steady. Select the camera that matches the scene instead of enlarging every subject with digital zoom. Those steps address the causes Samsung identifies most often when Galaxy images look blurry, dark, or softer than expected: settings, shooting distance, focus and environmental conditions.
The A23 family has capable hardware but clear limits. Samsung lists a 50 MP main camera, 5 MP ultra-wide, 2 MP macro and 2 MP depth camera in its A23 5G materials. The exact menus and specifications can differ between LTE and 5G phones and between regions, so use the labels shown on your own device.
Know what the Galaxy A23 camera can—and cannot—do
Choosing realistic settings starts with understanding the four rear cameras. Samsung’s US A23 5G guidance identifies these roles:
| Camera | Listed resolution | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main | 50 MP | Everyday photos, people, food and scenes in which you can stand at a normal distance | It is the general-purpose camera, not a dedicated optical telephoto lens. |
| Ultra-wide | 5 MP | Landscapes, architecture and groups that need more of the scene | The lower-resolution sensor can show less fine detail than the main camera. |
| Macro | 2 MP | Very close details such as textures, small objects or flowers | It needs close working distance and careful focus; it is not a zoom camera. |
| Depth | 2 MP | Helping Portrait mode separate a subject from its background | It is a depth sensor, not a telephoto camera for magnifying distant subjects. |
Samsung’s US 5G specification sheet lists apertures of F1.8 for the main camera, F2.2 for the ultra-wide and F2.4 for the macro and depth cameras. A Samsung Korea specification page for the SM-A235N LTE model lists autofocus, optical image stabilization (OIS), an 8 MP front camera and up to 10x digital zoom. Those figures are model- and region-specific; they should not be treated as a universal specification for every A23 sold worldwide.

OIS can help the A23 produce smoother video and retain finer detail in low light, according to Samsung’s product description. It reduces the effect of small hand movements, but it cannot freeze a moving person, eliminate every blur, or turn a dark scene into daylight.
Start with a two-minute preparation
- Clean the lens covers. Use a soft, clean microfiber cloth. Fingerprints create haze, flare and apparent softness, especially around lights.
- Check the scene before opening Camera. Move nearer to the subject when possible, remove an obstruction between the phone and the subject, and look for a brighter angle. Samsung identifies shooting distance and environmental conditions as common causes of poor results.
- Hold the phone with two hands. Keep elbows close to your body and press the shutter gently. If the phone is moving while the shutter is open, OIS cannot guarantee a sharp frame.
- Use the rear main camera for the first attempt. It normally provides the most useful detail for ordinary framing. Switch lenses only when the scene demands a wider view or a close-up.
- Tap the important subject on the preview. This tells autofocus and exposure where your priority is. Wait for the preview to settle before pressing the shutter.
These checks are more valuable than searching for a single “best” setting. Samsung’s support guidance says that camera settings, distance and environmental factors can all make a Galaxy photo or video appear blurry, dark or lower in quality than expected.
Choose the right camera for the shot
Everyday subjects: stay on the main camera
Use the main rear camera for people, pets, meals, documents and general travel photographs. Frame the subject at the distance you actually want instead of cropping aggressively later. If the subject is small in the preview, take a few steps closer before considering zoom. A closer original frame preserves more real detail than a heavily enlarged crop.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Groups and landscapes: switch to Ultra-wide
Choose the ultra-wide control when a group, building or landscape will not fit with the main camera. Samsung describes the A23 ultra-wide as providing a wider view; one Gulf-region product page specifies a 123-degree field of view for that listed variant. Because field of view can vary by model and market, rely on the framing shown in your Camera preview. Keep faces near the center when possible: wide lenses can make people or objects near the edges look stretched.

Small nearby subjects: try Macro
Select Macro for a subject close to the phone, then move the handset slowly until the detail looks crisp. Macro has only 2 MP in Samsung’s listed configurations, so strong light and a steady hand matter. If the subject is not sharp, change the phone’s distance by a small amount rather than repeatedly tapping the shutter from the same position.
Distant subjects: avoid treating digital zoom as optical detail
The A23 specifications identify digital zoom, not a dedicated telephoto lens. Digital zoom enlarges or crops the image; it does not add optical information. Use the lowest zoom level that gives acceptable framing, keep the phone steady, and prefer moving closer when that is safe and practical. Samsung Korea lists up to 10x digital zoom for the SM-A235N LTE model, but that regional specification is not a promise that every A23 variant produces useful detail at 10x.
A repeatable workflow for clearer photos
- Open Camera and select the intended rear lens. Begin with the main camera unless you specifically need a wider or closer view.
- Compose before zooming. Place the subject where you want it in the frame. Try physically changing your position first.
- Tap to focus. Tap the subject’s face, eyes or the key object. Watch the preview for a moment to confirm that focus has settled.
- Improve the light. Turn the subject toward a window or other broad light source. Avoid placing a bright window directly behind a person unless you want a silhouette.
- Stabilize the phone. Use both hands, brace against a solid surface or pause your breathing for the shutter press. For a static scene, a compatible tripod and the self-timer can remove much of the shake caused by pressing the shutter.
- Take several frames when the subject moves. A second or third capture can be sharper than the first because people blink and hands shift. Keep the same composition while you repeat the shot.
- Review at full size. Open the Gallery image and zoom in on the eyes or the detail that mattered. A picture can look sharp in the thumbnail while being soft at 100 percent.
A tripod is an optional stability aid, not a camera upgrade. It is most useful for self-timer portraits, night scenes with stationary subjects and carefully composed landscapes. It cannot compensate for a moving subject or a lens that is dirty or damaged.

How to get better results in difficult light
Indoor rooms
Move the subject toward a window or brighter lamp rather than relying on a dark corner. Ask a person to pause briefly while you tap focus and capture. Keep overhead lights from shining directly into the lens, and check the preview for blown-out windows or deep shadows before taking the final frame.

Night and low light
Hold the phone especially still and use a support for static scenes. OIS may help with small hand movements, as Samsung describes, but movement from people, cars or leaves can still create blur. Take a short sequence and choose the sharpest frame. If the phone’s Camera app shows a dedicated low-light or night option, follow the controls displayed on that model; Samsung’s published material does not establish identical modes or icons on every A23 variant.
Backlit subjects
Change your position so the main light falls on the subject, or tap the subject before shooting so the camera prioritizes it. If the background is much brighter than the person, no camera setting can preserve perfect detail in both areas; changing the angle or adding light to the subject is the more reliable fix.
Portrait mode and background effects
Portrait mode uses software and the A23’s depth information to render separation between a person and the background. Open Camera, choose Portrait, position the subject at the distance suggested by the on-screen preview, adjust the effect strength if that control appears, and capture. Keep hair, glasses and other fine edges inside the frame; software separation can be less convincing around complicated outlines.

Samsung’s A23 5G guide documents additional editing after capture. In Gallery, open the portrait thumbnail, choose More options, then select Add portrait effect. The guide lists Blur, Spin, Zoom and Color Point. The names and availability can change with the phone’s model or software version, so use the options that your Gallery displays. Save a copy before applying an effect if you may want the unedited image later.

Why Samsung A23 photos look blurry—and what to check
The whole frame is soft
- Wipe the lens and remove any film, case edge or accessory covering it.
- Tap the subject and hold the phone still during capture.
- Move closer instead of using heavy digital zoom.
- Repeat in brighter light. A dark scene requires a longer exposure and makes hand movement more visible.
Only a close subject is blurry
The camera may be too close for the lens you selected. Back up slightly, try Macro for a genuinely near subject, and tap the exact detail you want sharp. Samsung’s support article discusses focus behavior at close range and a Focus enhancer feature on some Galaxy devices. Because the evidence does not establish the same feature or icon on every A23, follow the controls visible on your own Camera screen rather than searching for a guaranteed toggle.
The subject is sharp but the background is not
That can be intentional Portrait processing rather than a fault. Open the original in Gallery and compare it with the portrait-effect version. If edges look unnatural, reduce the effect strength when available or use the ordinary Photo mode.
Video looks shaky
OIS can help smooth handheld video on models that include it, but walking, panning quickly or filming in very low light can still produce movement. Brace the phone, pan slowly and use a tripod for a fixed shot. Review a short test clip before recording an important event.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsComposition changes that improve perceived quality
- Leave breathing room. Do not crop hands, feet or important objects against the frame edge.
- Keep horizons level. A straight horizon makes a landscape look more deliberate, even when resolution is unchanged.
- Use the background deliberately. Move a person away from a cluttered wall or bright object that competes with the subject.
- Watch the edges with Ultra-wide. Place faces and straight architectural lines nearer the center to reduce stretching.
- Check reflections. Clean glass, windows and shiny tables can introduce glare that looks like a lens defect.
When the problem may be hardware
If every lens remains hazy after cleaning, the preview shows persistent focus hunting, or images contain a fixed spot in the same location, remove any case or lens protector and test again in good daylight. Restart the phone and check whether the Camera app behaves normally in both Photo and Video modes. A persistent fault after these basic checks may require a qualified repair or replacement service; confirm that the provider supports your exact LTE or 5G model and local warranty terms before handing over the phone.

Do not judge a hardware problem from one dark indoor image. First repeat the test with the main camera, a clean lens, a stationary subject, good light and no digital zoom. That controlled comparison separates ordinary shooting conditions from a likely fault.
A practical decision guide
| Your goal | Start with | Adjustment that usually helps |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp everyday photo | Main camera | Tap focus, move to a useful distance, add light and steady the phone. |
| Fit a large group or landscape | Ultra-wide | Keep faces away from the extreme edges and check the horizon. |
| Show tiny nearby detail | Macro | Change distance gradually, use bright light and hold still. |
| Separate a person from the background | Portrait | Use the on-screen distance guidance and moderate the effect strength. |
| Reach a distant subject | Main camera with modest zoom | Move closer when possible; expect reduced detail as digital magnification increases. |
| Static low-light scene or self-timer portrait | Main camera on a support | Use a tripod or solid surface and take multiple frames. |
What improvement is realistic?
Better technique can make A23 images cleaner, more consistently focused and easier to compose, but it cannot change the phone’s sensor size, lens resolution or digital-zoom limits. The main camera is the sensible default; the ultra-wide trades detail for coverage, Macro trades resolution for close focus, and Portrait trades a natural background for software-rendered separation. Samsung’s published specifications and support guidance provide those capabilities and troubleshooting principles, not an independent ranking of image quality between modes.
For the most reliable results, make the sequence habitual: clean lens, choose the correct camera, compose at a sensible distance, tap the subject, improve the light, steady the phone and review the full-size image. That process addresses the variables you can control while keeping expectations aligned with the A23’s regional hardware and software differences.
