Short answer: choose a 5.1.2 soundbar when you want the extra side-firing surround channels, have a room where those channels can work, and accept the model’s price and placement requirements. Choose a 3.1.2 soundbar when you want a simpler system with a center channel, wireless subwoofer and two height channels, while giving up the side-firing channels listed on the comparable model.
Samsung’s HW-Q800D is a concrete 5.1.2 example, while the HW-Q700D is a 3.1.2 example. Both list Dolby Atmos support, so Atmos is not exclusive to the higher channel count. The meaningful differences are the speaker layout, included equipment, room fit, source compatibility and local price.
Decision at a glance
- Pick the 5.1.2 layout if a wider surround field is a priority and your room gives side-firing speakers clear paths toward the side walls.
- Pick the 3.1.2 layout if you mainly want a dedicated center channel, a wireless subwoofer and overhead effects from up-firing channels in a less complex package.
- Do not choose by the number alone. Channel notation describes the intended layout; it does not guarantee the same audible result in every room.
- Check the box contents. Both cited Samsung examples include a wireless subwoofer, but neither specification lists rear speakers as included.
- Confirm the signal path. Dolby Atmos playback depends on compatible content, source hardware, television support and, for wireless Atmos, Samsung’s Wi-Fi, TV-model and regional requirements.
What 5.1.2 and 3.1.2 mean
The three-part label describes channels in this order: the first number is the main speaker channels, the second is the subwoofer or low-frequency-effects channel, and the final number is the height-channel count. A 5.1.2 system therefore has five main channels, one subwoofer channel and two height channels. A 3.1.2 system has three main channels, one subwoofer channel and two height channels.
In the Samsung examples, the distinction is visible in the published speaker layout. The Q800D is listed as 5.1.2 with 11 speakers, including side-firing and up-firing speakers. The Q700D is listed as 3.1.2 with nine speakers, including a center speaker and up-firing speakers; its specification does not list side-firing speakers.

The notation does not say how far apart the speakers are, how much power they receive, how well your walls reflect sound, or whether your television and source device can deliver an Atmos signal. Treat it as a layout clue, then inspect the complete specification and installation conditions.
Samsung HW-Q800D 5.1.2 vs. HW-Q700D 3.1.2
| Buying factor | Samsung HW-Q800D 5.1.2 | Samsung HW-Q700D 3.1.2 |
|---|---|---|
| Published channel and speaker count | 5.1.2; 11 speakers | 3.1.2; 9 speakers |
| Speaker directions listed by Samsung | Side-firing and up-firing speakers | Up-firing speakers; side-firing speakers are not listed |
| Subwoofer | Wireless subwoofer included | Wireless subwoofer included |
| Rear speakers | Not included; Samsung identifies the SWA-9500S rear kit as separately sold in cited regional materials | Not included in the cited specifications |
| Dolby Atmos | Supported formats listed; compatible Atmos content is required for Atmos playback | Supported formats listed |
| Best-matching priority | More listed surround channels and side-firing speakers | Simpler layout that retains center, subwoofer and height channels |
This table compares Samsung’s published specifications, not a controlled listening test. The Q800D’s additional speakers can be useful for a wider surround presentation, but room geometry and placement determine how much of that design you actually hear.
What the 5.1.2 model adds
Side-firing channels
Side-firing speakers send sound laterally rather than only toward the listener or ceiling. In a room with usable side walls, that extra direction can help create a broader sense of effects around the seating position. If one side of the room is open to another space, heavily absorbent, or blocked by furniture, the reflected contribution can be less predictable. That is why the 5.1.2 label should be treated as an opportunity for more surround information, not a promise that every room will sound dramatically wider.
Two additional main speakers in the published layout
The Q800D’s 11-speaker specification and 5.1.2 label indicate a more elaborate main-channel arrangement than the Q700D’s nine-speaker, 3.1.2 design. The practical value is greatest for buyers who watch films, series or games with frequent directional effects and can position the bar so those channels are not obstructed.
It does not include rear speakers by default
A 5.1.2 label does not mean a box contains a complete set of wireless speakers behind the sofa. Samsung’s cited Q800D materials identify the SWA-9500S wireless rear-speaker kit as a separate purchase. Verify that the kit is compatible with the exact local Q800D SKU before budgeting for it. The Q700D specification likewise does not list rear speakers as included.

What the 3.1.2 model retains
A dedicated center channel
The Q700D specification lists a center speaker. A center channel is the part of the layout intended to anchor dialogue and other front-center information, so this is not a two-channel bar that omits the middle of the soundstage.
Two height channels
The Q700D retains two up-firing channels. Samsung describes its feature as “Stunning overhead audio with 2 up-firing channels.” That means a 3.1.2 model can reproduce height-channel information from compatible content; 5.1.2 is not required simply to access Dolby Atmos height effects.

Both the Q700D and Q800D specifications list a wireless subwoofer. The subwoofer is part of each cited package, so moving from 5.1.2 to 3.1.2 does not mean giving up the separate low-frequency unit.
Dolby Atmos: content and compatibility come first
Samsung lists Dolby Atmos formats for both models. To hear an Atmos mix, however, the program must contain compatible Atmos content and the signal must survive the route from the app or playback device to the soundbar. A channel label cannot create Atmos metadata that is absent from the source.
Verify the content
Look for an Atmos designation in the streaming service, disc, game or media file you intend to use. A conventional 5.1 soundtrack can still play through either soundbar, but it is not the same as receiving an Atmos object-based mix.

Check every device in the chain
Write down the exact television model, streaming box or game console, app and connection method before buying. Then confirm in the manuals that the television can pass the format from the source to the soundbar. If you use a television app, the TV itself is the source; if you use an external player, both the player and the TV’s pass-through behavior matter.

Understand wireless Atmos limits
Samsung’s regional materials state that wireless Dolby Atmos depends on Wi-Fi and works only with specified Samsung television model years and regional compatibility conditions. Do not assume that a Samsung television from another year or market will support the same feature. Check the exact soundbar SKU, TV model, region and software requirements before making wireless playback a deciding factor.
Use the connection recommended for your equipment
- Confirm that the source is outputting a Dolby Atmos-compatible signal.
- Follow the soundbar and television manuals for the supported wired or wireless route. If your equipment offers HDMI ARC or eARC, use the port and setting specified for Atmos by those manuals.
- Set the source device to pass the original or bitstream audio format when that option is available; avoid a stereo-only output mode.
- Play a title that is explicitly marked Atmos and check the soundbar’s information display or app for the incoming format.
- If Atmos does not appear, test the same title from another known-compatible source before concluding that the speaker layout is the problem.
Room and placement factors that can outweigh the label
Soundbar height and obstructions
Place the bar centered beneath or immediately in front of the television, with its front and top surfaces unobstructed. A cabinet lip, television stand or soundbar cover can block direct output and the up-firing path. Use the mounting position recommended in the manual for your exact model rather than assuming every Q-series bar has identical clearances.
Ceiling and side-wall conditions
Up-firing height channels rely on sound reaching the ceiling and returning to the listening area. A very irregular, absorbent or unusually open ceiling can make height effects less consistent. Side-firing channels also depend on the room’s side boundaries. Measure the space around the planned seating position and note whether one side opens into a hallway or another room.
Seating position
Both layouts are designed for listeners in front of the bar. If the main seat is far to one side, very close to a wall, or well behind the bar’s recommended listening zone, the balance between direct and reflected sound can change. A 5.1.2 design gives you more directional sources, but it cannot correct an unsuitable seating position.

Subwoofer location
The wireless subwoofer can be placed separately from the bar, which gives you flexibility to avoid placing it inside a closed cabinet. Keep it on a stable surface with ventilation and follow Samsung’s pairing and placement instructions. Moving the subwoofer a short distance and retesting can help when a particular corner makes bass sound uneven, but there is no universal best location for every room.
Choose the HW-Q800D-style 5.1.2 layout when
- You specifically want side-firing channels in addition to the two height channels.
- Your seating is reasonably centered and the room has side walls that can support reflected surround sound.
- You are comfortable checking a larger speaker layout and making sure the bar’s top and sides remain clear.
- You may later want Samsung’s compatible wireless rear-speaker option and are willing to buy it separately if your local SKU supports it.
- The local price difference is acceptable after comparing the complete packages, not just the channel labels.
These conditions describe a fit for the layout, not a guaranteed sonic ranking. The Q800D can still be the wrong purchase if its side-firing speakers are blocked or your television cannot pass the formats you plan to use.
Choose the HW-Q700D-style 3.1.2 layout when
- Your priority is a straightforward front soundstage with a center channel, wireless subwoofer and two height channels.
- You have limited side clearance, an open-plan room, or furniture that would obstruct side-firing speakers.
- You want Atmos-capable hardware without paying for the Q800D’s additional listed surround speakers.
- You prefer a simpler installation and do not plan to add rear speakers.
- Your television, source devices and local pricing make the Q700D the better-supported or better-value option.
A 3.1.2 purchase is not an admission that Atmos is unavailable. Samsung lists Atmos formats for the Q700D, and its two up-firing channels are specifically part of the design.

Check the exact regional box contents
Model names can be reused across markets with different suffixes and bundles. Before ordering, open the regional product page or retailer specification for the exact SKU and verify the soundbar, subwoofer, remote, power cables, wall-mount hardware and any included adapters. The cited Q800D and Q700D pages establish the wireless subwoofer inclusion, but accessories can vary by market.

Do not generalize from the Samsung range
Samsung’s soundbar category includes several channel counts and feature sets. A feature shown on one Q-series or S-series page should not be assumed to exist on every model. Compare the exact model number, speaker directions, included components and supported formats for the unit you are actually buying.
Installation checklist
- Record the SKU. Photograph the model label and retain the regional product page so you can verify accessories and software support later.
- Plan the position. Center the bar with the TV, leave the top and side-firing areas open, and avoid enclosing it in a cabinet unless Samsung’s instructions explicitly allow that placement.
- Place the subwoofer. Start near the front of the room, keep ventilation clear, pair it using the supplied procedure and move it only after confirming the basic connection.
- Connect the source. Use the wired or wireless route supported by your television and soundbar manuals. Select the TV input and audio-output mode that preserves the source format.
- Confirm speaker operation. Run Samsung’s built-in test or setup routine if your model provides one, then check that the subwoofer and every listed channel responds.
- Test with known content. Use a title marked Dolby Atmos and compare it with ordinary 5.1 content so you know which signal the system is receiving.
- Fine-tune only after the basics work. Adjust listening mode, level and distance settings conservatively; changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify a connection problem.
Troubleshooting common buying and setup mistakes
The soundbar plays audio, but Atmos is not shown
- Confirm that the title is actually labeled Dolby Atmos in the service or player.
- Check whether the source device is converting output to stereo or ordinary surround.
- Verify that the television connection and audio settings pass the format to the bar.
- If you are using wireless Atmos, recheck Wi-Fi, television model year, regional support and the exact soundbar SKU.
Surround effects seem narrow on a 5.1.2 model
- Make sure the bar’s side-firing surfaces are not against a wall, inside a cabinet or blocked by the television stand.
- Check whether the main seat is centered and within the placement guidance.
- Consider the room’s open side, wall materials and furniture before concluding that the hardware is defective.
- Use the same Atmos or multichannel scene when comparing positions; different mixes can create different impressions.
The height effect is weak on either model
- Remove objects above the soundbar that could obstruct the up-firing path.
- Check the ceiling shape and surface around the listening area.
- Confirm that the source is sending a format with height information rather than a stereo track.
- Do not expect a 3.1.2 or 5.1.2 label to compensate for an unsuitable room.
The subwoofer will not connect
- Follow the model-specific pairing sequence and make sure both units have power.
- Place the subwoofer within the range recommended by Samsung and away from avoidable sources of interference.
- Reset and pair again only after checking that the soundbar itself is receiving audio.
Price, availability and model-year checks
No current universal price is published for either model. Soundbar prices, bundles and stock vary by country, retailer and promotion, so compare the Q800D and Q700D in your market on the day you buy. Include the cost of any separately sold rear kit and required cables or mounts.
Both product pages are regional Samsung listings, and model suffixes differ by market. Confirm that the listing’s suffix matches your television region, warranty and desired wireless features. A lower price on an imported SKU may come with different firmware support, accessories or wireless-Atmos compatibility.
A practical buying checklist
- Have you decided whether side-firing channels are useful in your room?
- Does the exact model list a wireless subwoofer, and is it included in the box?
- Are rear speakers included, or would the compatible kit be an additional purchase?
- Does your TV and source device support the Dolby Atmos path you intend to use?
- If you want wireless Atmos, have you checked Wi-Fi, TV model-year and regional requirements?
- Can you place the soundbar with its top and side-firing areas unobstructed?
- Have you compared complete local prices rather than channel labels alone?
- Are you buying the exact regional SKU whose accessories and warranty you can verify?
Bottom line
The 5.1.2 design is the better match for a buyer who values the Q800D’s additional listed side-firing and main-channel speakers and can provide the room and budget they require. The 3.1.2 design is the more focused choice when a center channel, wireless subwoofer and two height channels meet your needs without the extra side-firing layout. Since both examples list Dolby Atmos, make the final decision from the complete speaker specification, source compatibility, placement and local package contents—not from the channel number by itself.
