If you want a complete 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos system with a subwoofer and rear speakers, the Hisense AX5125H is the clearest lower-cost alternative to Samsung’s HW-Q800D. It is not automatically cheaper in every country, and the prices commonly quoted for it are dated UK snapshots, so verify your local delivered price, stock, exact model suffix and return policy before treating it as a saving.
The choice is less about the channel number printed on the box than about what is included, which audio formats and connections your television supports, and whether you value stronger bass control, dialogue clarity or the simplest setup. This guide explains the differences without treating review observations as personal testing.
What you get from the Samsung HW-Q800D
Samsung identifies the HW-Q800D as a 2024 Q-series soundbar with a 5.1.2-channel layout and Wireless Dolby Atmos. The “5.1.2” description indicates five main surround channels, one subwoofer channel and two height channels, but it does not by itself tell you whether rear speakers are included. The HW-Q800D is sold as a bar-and-subwoofer system; confirm the contents of the package for your market before comparing it with a package that includes dedicated rear speakers.
Samsung’s model-support material includes manuals and firmware support. The support page lists a firmware file modified in September 2026, which shows that software support is still being published for the model. Exact inputs, wireless features and regional specifications can vary, so use the Samsung specification page for the country where you will buy the unit rather than assuming that a listing from another region is identical.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
RTINGS describes the HW-Q800D as the successor to the Q800C, with incremental updates rather than a major redesign. Its review highlights universal Chromecast support, Bluetooth 5.2, a dedicated subwoofer, detailed dialogue and an Active Voice Amplifier feature. Those are useful reference points when deciding what you would give up by choosing a cheaper package.
The strongest lower-cost candidate: Hisense AX5125H
What Hi-Fi? describes the Hisense AX5125H as a complete 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos system that includes dedicated rear speakers and a subwoofer. That physical package is its central advantage over a bar-only purchase: you receive speakers intended to create surround and height effects rather than having to add optional rear units later.
The same comparison page reported UK prices of £194 at Amazon, £199 at Very, and £229 at Currys and Richer Sounds when it was accessed. These are retail snapshots, not a current worldwide price. Promotions, VAT, delivery charges, regional model names and availability can change the result. A fair comparison with the HW-Q800D uses prices from the same country, on the same day, for products that are in stock and returnable.

What Hi-Fi? lists HDMI eARC, an HDMI input, optical audio and Bluetooth on the AX5125H. It supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The page does not list streaming or voice-control functions, so do not assume that it behaves like a Wi-Fi soundbar or a smart speaker. If you need built-in streaming, Chromecast, voice commands or app-based multiroom features, check the exact specification before ordering.

In its review findings, What Hi-Fi? reports impressive scale and spaciousness for the money and a straightforward setup. It also notes occasional excess from the subwoofer, some voice muffling and lighter bass effects that are less dynamic. Those are the publication’s observations, not measurements from an independent test performed for this article.
How the two packages differ
| Category | Samsung HW-Q800D | Hisense AX5125H | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channel configuration | 5.1.2 channels; Samsung model from 2024 | 5.1.2 system, described as a complete Dolby Atmos package | Whether the quoted package includes rear speakers as well as the subwoofer |
| Rear speakers | Confirm the contents for your market | Dedicated rear speakers are included according to What Hi-Fi? | Speaker count, stands or wall-mount hardware, and wireless receiver requirements |
| Subwoofer | Dedicated subwoofer | Included subwoofer | Placement space, power connection and return terms |
| Immersive formats | Wireless Dolby Atmos; check the regional specification for other formats | Dolby Atmos and DTS:X | Whether your TV and source device pass the format through eARC or another supported path |
| Connections and wireless functions | Regional details vary; RTINGS notes Chromecast support and Bluetooth 5.2 | HDMI eARC, HDMI input, optical and Bluetooth; no streaming or voice control listed by What Hi-Fi? | Number of HDMI inputs, eARC availability, Bluetooth version and Wi-Fi features |
| Reported strengths | Detailed dialogue; Active Voice Amplifier; dedicated bass channel | Scale, spaciousness and straightforward setup for the price | Whether the review priorities match your room and listening habits |
| Reported limitations | Incremental update over Q800C rather than a major redesign | Subwoofer can be excessive; some voice muffling; lighter bass effects less dynamic | Return policy and the ability to adjust bass or dialogue modes |
The table shows why a cheaper system can still be a meaningful alternative. Both use the 5.1.2 label, but the Hisense package’s included rear speakers and DTS:X support may matter more to a buyer who wants a complete surround system than a feature such as built-in streaming. Conversely, Samsung’s documented Chromecast support, Bluetooth 5.2 and dialogue-focused processing may justify a higher price for a household that uses those functions every day.
UK price snapshots and what “for less” really means
The only itemized prices available for the AX5125H are UK listings captured by What Hi-Fi?: £194 at Amazon, £199 at Very, and £229 at Currys and Richer Sounds. The Sony Bravia Theatre System 6 was listed at a launch price of £549, $800 or AU$1199, and What Hi-Fi? said it was commonly around £499 in the UK at the time of its comparison. Those figures are historical reference points, not promises of today’s price.

|---|---|---|
| Hisense AX5125H | £194 Amazon; £199 Very; £229 Currys and Richer Sounds | UK retail snapshots taken when the page was accessed; recheck stock, delivery and model variant |
| Sony Bravia Theatre System 6 | Launch: £549 / $800 / AU$1199; around £499 in the UK at the comparison date | Launch and time-specific comparison prices; not evidence of a current deal |
| Samsung HW-Q800D | Not stated in the supplied price evidence | Use a current local listing for the same region and package before calculating savings |
Do not convert the UK figures into a universal claim that the Hisense is cheaper. Exchange rates, local taxes, bundles and clearance stock can reverse the ranking. “For less” should mean a lower delivered price in your market for a package with comparable speakers and warranty coverage, not merely a lower launch price or a short-lived listing.

Choose by physical package before counting channels
Confirm the rear-speaker bundle
A 5.1.2 label describes a channel arrangement, not the contents of every retail box. Look for explicit wording that says rear speakers are included. If the listing calls them optional, you must add their cost and account for their power supplies, wireless modules and placement.
Check the subwoofer arrangement
Both systems use a dedicated subwoofer, but room placement and adjustment determine whether bass sounds controlled or overwhelming. Leave enough clearance for ventilation and a reliable power connection. If you are sensitive to heavy bass, favor a model with usable level controls and a retailer return policy.
Measure the room and seating
Rear speakers need positions behind or beside the main seating area, while upward-firing height effects depend on ceiling and room geometry. Measure the distance to the television, the width of the seating area and the available wall or shelf space before ordering. A complete package cannot create convincing surround if the rear units must sit directly beside the bar or be blocked by furniture.
Atmos, DTS:X and the connection path
Dolby Atmos is only delivered when the source, television and soundbar all support a compatible signal path. The AX5125H lists HDMI eARC, HDMI input, optical and Bluetooth, as well as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Optical connections generally do not provide the same lossless high-bandwidth path as eARC, so check the television’s audio-output options and the source device’s settings.

Use eARC when your TV supports it
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI eARC port to the television’s HDMI port labeled eARC or ARC.
- In the TV sound menu, select the HDMI-CEC/eARC audio output option and enable passthrough or bitstream where those labels are available.
- Set the streaming box, game console or disc player to output a supported Dolby or DTS bitstream rather than forcing stereo PCM, unless your equipment requires PCM.
- Play a known Atmos or DTS:X title and check the soundbar’s on-screen or front-panel indication, if provided.
Menu names differ by television and region, so use the manuals for the specific models. If your television has ARC but not eARC, verify which formats it can pass; the soundbar’s Atmos capability alone cannot overcome a limitation in the TV or source.
When HDMI input is useful
An HDMI input on the Hisense can provide a direct connection for a source device when the television’s passthrough is limited. Count the inputs on every device in your system before deciding whether one soundbar input is sufficient. If you connect several consoles or players, an external HDMI switch or a television with enough compatible inputs may be necessary.
Optical and Bluetooth are fallback connections
Optical can be useful for an older television that lacks ARC, but confirm the formats it can carry. Bluetooth is convenient for music and television sets that support it, yet it is not a substitute for a wired Atmos connection. The absence of listed streaming or voice-control functions on the AX5125H means you should plan to stream from a separate TV, media player or phone.

Hisense: scale and value
What Hi-Fi? considers the AX5125H spacious and large-sounding for its price and describes setup as straightforward. Those qualities make it attractive when your priority is getting a full surround package without paying for premium ecosystem features.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Hisense: bass and dialogue caveats
The same review reports that the subwoofer can sometimes be excessive, that voices may be muffled and that lighter bass effects are less dynamic. Use the subwoofer-level control, move the subwoofer away from a corner if the room exaggerates low frequencies, and select a dialogue or voice mode if the model provides one. If speech remains unclear at normal volume, use the return window rather than assuming a different cable will fix a speaker-tuning issue.
Samsung: dialogue and feature emphasis
RTINGS highlights detailed dialogue and Samsung’s Active Voice Amplifier on the HW-Q800D. It also notes Chromecast support and Bluetooth 5.2. These features are more relevant than small specification differences if you regularly cast audio, use Bluetooth accessories or watch dialogue-heavy programming.
Do not treat channel counts as a sound-quality score
Two products can both be labeled 5.1.2 and still sound different because of driver design, room calibration, processing, speaker placement and bass integration. Compare the complete package and the functions you will actually use instead of assuming that a higher number or a newer year guarantees a better experience.
Setup checklist for a complete 5.1.2 system
- Inventory the box before installation: soundbar, subwoofer, rear speakers, power cords, remote, cables and any wireless receiver or wall hardware.
- Place the soundbar centered under or in front of the TV, keeping its upward-firing and front-facing areas unobstructed.
- Position the subwoofer on the floor near the front of the room, then test a second position if bass is boomy or weak.
- Place the rear speakers to the sides or slightly behind the main seats at a similar height, with clear power access.
- Connect HDMI eARC first when available. Use the HDMI input or optical only when that path better suits your television and source layout.
- Update firmware through the manufacturer’s documented process before judging performance. Samsung’s support page provides model manuals and firmware support for the HW-Q800D.
- Run the soundbar’s calibration or speaker-level procedure if your model offers one, then adjust rear level, center/dialogue level and subwoofer level for your room.
- Test three sources: a dialogue-heavy program, an Atmos movie or series, and ordinary stereo music. This reveals different weaknesses than a single demonstration clip.
Common problems and practical fixes
No Atmos indicator
- Confirm that the title or game actually contains an Atmos track.
- Check that the streaming app, source device and TV are set to bitstream or passthrough rather than stereo output.
- Reseat the HDMI cable and verify that both ends use the labeled eARC/ARC ports.
- Try the soundbar’s HDMI input if the television is not passing the signal correctly.
- Update firmware and consult the model manual for regional format limitations.
Rear speakers are silent
- Check each rear speaker’s power connection and wireless-pairing indicator.
- Confirm that the sound mode is not forcing two-channel stereo.
- Raise the rear level temporarily while testing a surround soundtrack.
- Move wireless equipment or large metal obstructions if pairing repeatedly drops.
Voices sound muffled
- Enable the available voice or dialogue enhancement mode.
- Lower the subwoofer level if low-frequency energy is masking speech.
- Ensure the soundbar is not blocked by the TV stand or a decorative grille.
- Compare the TV’s passthrough and PCM settings; a format-conversion problem can change the balance.
- If the issue persists with several sources, use the retailer’s return or exchange process.
Bass is boomy
- Move the subwoofer away from a corner or wall junction.
- Reduce its level and replay a familiar soundtrack.
- Check that a night, bass-boost or movie mode has not been selected unintentionally.
When the Sony Bravia Theatre System 6 belongs in the comparison
What Hi-Fi? presents Sony’s Bravia Theatre System 6 as another complete Dolby Atmos package and describes it as more powerful and refined than the Hisense, while calling the Hisense compelling for buyers focused on low cost. Its reported launch pricing—£549, $800 or AU$1199—puts it in a different value bracket, even though the page said it was commonly around £499 in the UK at the time.
That makes Sony a comparison option rather than a direct “for less” replacement. Consider it when performance refinement is more important than the lowest purchase price, and compare current local pricing with the same care used for the other models.
A decision framework
Choose the Hisense AX5125H when
- You want a complete package with rear speakers and a subwoofer included.
- Your priority is a lower entry price and a large, spacious presentation.
- You need HDMI eARC, an HDMI input, optical and Bluetooth, plus Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
- You do not require built-in streaming or voice-control features.
Choose the Samsung HW-Q800D when
- You value Samsung’s documented 2024 Q-series platform, Wireless Dolby Atmos and ongoing model support.
- Chromecast support, Bluetooth 5.2, detailed dialogue or Active Voice Amplifier are important to your routine.
- You prefer Samsung’s feature set enough to justify the current local price difference.
- You have confirmed the exact regional package and whether rear speakers are included or optional.
Consider Sony’s system when
- You are willing to spend considerably more than the reported Hisense UK snapshots.
- You prioritize the more powerful and refined performance described by What Hi-Fi?
- You have checked the current price in your country rather than relying on launch pricing.
Buying checklist before you pay
- Record the exact model name and regional suffix from the retailer’s listing.
- Compare delivered prices in one currency and include tax, shipping and required accessories.
- Confirm that rear speakers and the subwoofer are in the box.
- Check HDMI eARC, HDMI input, optical and Bluetooth requirements against your TV and source devices.
- Verify Atmos and DTS:X support for the exact model and connection path.
- Read the warranty, return period and dead-on-arrival procedure.
- Check current stock; a low historical price is irrelevant if the unit is unavailable or refurbished without clear disclosure.
- Measure the bar, subwoofer and rear-speaker locations before ordering.
Verdict
The Hisense AX5125H is the most credible lower-cost alternative in this comparison because it is described as a complete 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos package with dedicated rear speakers and a subwoofer, while retaining HDMI eARC, an HDMI input, optical, Bluetooth, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Its reported compromises are bass that can occasionally run heavy, some voice muffling and less dynamic lighter bass effects.
The Samsung HW-Q800D remains the better fit when its dialogue processing, Active Voice Amplifier, Chromecast support, Bluetooth 5.2 and Wireless Dolby Atmos matter more than the lowest price. Since the available Hisense prices are UK snapshots and no Samsung price is established here, calculate the saving only after checking current, local listings for equivalent packages.
