Yes, one remote can operate two TVs—but whether you can control them separately depends on how the remote communicates and whether both TVs respond to the same commands. If two nearby TVs share the same infrared (IR) code, one button press may affect both. Check the exact TV and remote models before buying a replacement or trying to pair them.
Why one remote may control two TVs
Most standard TV remotes are meant to control one TV at a time. Sony Support says an exception can occur when TVs are from the same manufacturer and use the same IR frequency. In that case, both sets may respond to the same command rather than behaving as independently selectable devices. Sony Support explains the compatibility and shared-response issue.
IR remotes send commands toward a sensor on the TV. If both sensors receive a command they recognize, both TVs can react. Panasonic says its TV remote IR code cannot be changed and recommends placing multiple Panasonic TVs far enough apart. The exact behavior and available settings depend on the models involved. Panasonic’s guidance addresses its TVs specifically.
Can you control each TV separately?
Sometimes, but compatibility alone is not enough. For independent control, the remote needs a way to select which device receives commands, and the TVs must respond to distinguishable commands or a control method that pairs to the intended TV. If both TVs recognize the same IR commands, adding both to a remote does not necessarily stop one from responding when you operate the other.

For TVs with different manufacturers or different IR command sets, Sony recommends considering a universal remote with an additional function button, such as AUX or OPTION. Confirm that the remote supports both exact TV models and provides selectable device modes. Sony also identifies learning remotes as an option when the original remotes are available; copying commands does not, by itself, isolate TVs that share those commands.
Choose a solution for your setup
| What you observe | What to try | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Both TVs respond to the same remote | Move the TVs farther apart, or partially cover the IR sensor on the TV that should not respond if no applicable setting is available. | LG recommends separation or partial sensor coverage for this situation. Check the guidance for your models before covering a sensor. LG support guidance. |
| The TVs use different brands or IR command sets | Look for a universal remote that supports both models and has distinct device modes. | Do not assume that “universal” means it can isolate two TVs that respond to the same IR code. |
| You still have both original remotes | Consider a learning remote that can copy their IR commands, and assign commands to selectable device modes. | Test power, input, volume, and navigation separately; learning commands alone does not establish independent control. |
| The remote uses Bluetooth or radio frequency (RF) | Check the manuals for the exact TV and remote, including pairing instructions. | Bluetooth, RF, and IR are different control methods. Do not assume an IR universal remote replaces a paired Bluetooth or RF connection. |
What to check before buying a remote
- Exact compatibility: Verify support for both TV model numbers, not just their brands.
- Device slots and selection: Check how many devices the remote can store and how you switch between them.
- Command overlap: Ask whether the two TVs use distinguishable IR commands. If they share commands, device selection on the remote may not prevent both from responding.
- Learning support: If you plan to copy commands from original remotes, verify that the learned commands can be assigned to separate selectable modes.
- Required connection: Confirm whether each TV requires IR, Bluetooth, or RF pairing. A remote that supports one method may not support another.
For example, One For All describes its Evolve 2 (URC 7125) as a two-device remote with learning and a device-mode indicator. Its documented example is controlling a TV and a set-top box; that description does not establish independent control of two TVs that use the same IR code. See the manufacturer’s product details.

IR, Bluetooth, and RF are not interchangeable
A remote’s connection type affects what will work. One For All says its URC7935 Streamer remote transmits IR only; control of an RF streaming device through HDMI-CEC depends on the TV and streaming device and is not guaranteed. This applies to that remote and connected streaming devices—not to every TV remote. One For All’s explanation illustrates why you should check the specific equipment manuals rather than infer compatibility from the word “remote.”

How to diagnose your TVs
- Record both TV model numbers and the remote model. Find them on the equipment labels or in the device settings, then use the manufacturers’ manuals or support pages to check the control method and compatibility.
- Test whether both TVs respond to the same command. With both TVs on, try a simple command such as volume or input from the current remote. If both react, shared IR commands are a likely explanation, though model-specific guidance is needed to confirm.
- Check for an available setting or pairing procedure. Follow the manuals for each TV and remote. Do not assume that a Bluetooth or RF remote behaves like an IR remote.
- If both sets respond and no setting resolves it, change the IR path. Increase the distance between the TVs or partially shield the sensor on the TV that should ignore the command, following manufacturer guidance.
- For a replacement, verify operation before relying on it. Confirm compatibility and device selection, then test power, input, volume, and navigation on each TV. If both TVs still react to the same commands, the remote has not provided independent control.
