They share historical settlement-management themes, but they operate at very different scales.

Salt and Soil’s availability is especially time-sensitive: its Steam page was listing a planned November 9, 2026 Early Access release and “not yet available” status on October 13, 2026. Check the live store page before purchasing.

One family is the strategic unit
Salt and Soil treats the household—not the entire town—as the center of play. You manage a frontier homestead, raise livestock, cultivate land, trade for what you cannot produce, and decide how limited labor and supplies are distributed. Family members have traits and relationships, so a decision that solves an immediate shortage can affect trust, responsibilities, or the eventual succession plan.

The game describes annual family councils in which major choices are made. Those decisions are not isolated mission objectives: they shape the household that later heirs inherit. The result is a strategy structure closer to maintaining a living family institution than to optimizing a city grid.
Generational continuity replaces a single victory sprint
The official description presents a campaign covering the frontier period through 1900. The store’s general description says 1609–1900, while the developer’s Early Access description says, “The full campaign from 1607 to 1900 is playable: homestead, family, succession between generations, trade, neighbours and historical events on a map of North America.” Treat those start dates as differing wording on the same listing, not as a settled single opening year.
Because the campaign is designed to pass from one generation to the next, success means leaving viable land, supplies, relationships, and a capable successor. A poor harvest or a divisive council decision can matter well beyond the turn on which it occurs. That makes Salt and Soil a strong choice if you enjoy planning for consequences that may not pay off immediately.
Turn-based, roguelite pacing
Turns give you time to inspect the homestead, weigh a trade, and consider family consequences before committing. The roguelite colony-simulation framing suggests that individual runs can develop differently rather than following a completely scripted family history. The appeal is deliberation and adaptation: each year asks what this particular household can afford to risk.
Generative-AI council text has a practical consequence
Salt and Soil’s Steam page discloses that generative AI creates some Annual Family Council text and structured outcomes. It also lists a broadband internet connection as required for the current version. The developer says offline play is planned for a future version, but that is not the current stated requirement. If you need a game that works without an internet connection, this condition alone may rule Salt and Soil out.

What Manor Lords is built around
A settlement that grows organically
Manor Lords makes the settlement itself your main project. You lay out roads and buildings without a conventional square grid, establish homes and workplaces, and expand a community as its population and needs change. The official site emphasizes organic town growth and buildings inspired by European examples from the 11th–15th centuries.
Steam uses late-14th-century Franconia as an inspiration, but the official site says the game is not set in one specific century. It is more accurate to call Manor Lords a medieval European-inspired simulation than a precise recreation of one dated place.

Production chains connect the economy
Manor Lords asks you to think in linked systems. Raw materials must be gathered, processed, transported, and converted into goods that support residents or enable further development. A new building is therefore not just a visual upgrade: it can create demand for labor, fuel, tools, storage, or transport capacity elsewhere in the settlement.
This creates a different kind of pressure from Salt and Soil. Instead of balancing a few household members and a family council, you diagnose bottlenecks across an economy. A shortage can originate far from the building where its effects become visible, so the satisfying solution is often to redesign the chain rather than simply gather more of one resource.
Regional expansion and real-time battles
Manor Lords extends beyond a single town. You can develop multiple regions and compete for territory, while real-time tactical battles make defense and expansion military decisions as well as economic ones. The town’s prosperity is exposed to the costs of war, so battlefield choices can affect the civilian settlement that supports your army.

If you want a strategy game in which road placement, resource throughput, territory, and troop positioning interact, Manor Lords offers the broader sandbox. It is also the more demanding option for players who prefer pausing, monitoring several systems, and making decisions while events continue to unfold.

Family decisions versus systems management
Salt and Soil concentrates information. You are usually asking, “What does this household need next, and who should carry that responsibility?” Relationships and succession make people legible as individuals, not merely as labor units.
Manor Lords distributes information across the settlement. You are asking, “Where is the bottleneck, which district should grow, and can the economy support the next expansion?” Residents, buildings, supply routes, and soldiers form a network whose behavior matters more than any single character.
Deliberate turns versus continuous simulation
Turn-based play in Salt and Soil supports careful comparison of alternatives. If you like reading an event, discussing it mentally, and committing to one path, its cadence should feel natural.
Manor Lords combines city-building and economic simulation with real-time battles. Its cadence suits players who enjoy watching a settlement evolve continuously, then switching attention to tactical positioning when conflict begins. The need to monitor several systems at once is part of the challenge.

Personal continuity versus spatial mastery
Salt and Soil’s long-term memory is genealogical. A later generation inherits the consequences of earlier choices, and the household’s identity develops through those transitions.
Manor Lords’ long-term memory is spatial and institutional. The location of roads, workshops, homes, storage, and defenses determines how efficiently the domain functions as it grows. You improve the settlement by understanding its layout and redesigning it when the old arrangement no longer works.
Which historical setting will suit you?
Salt and Soil: an American frontier frame
Salt and Soil uses a North American frontier setting spanning several centuries in its store descriptions. It is concerned with homesteading, neighbors, trade, family continuity, and historical events affecting a household. Its setting is a backdrop for a family-scale strategy story, not a promise of a complete history course.
Manor Lords: medieval European references, not a fixed date
Manor Lords draws on medieval central-European visual and architectural references. Steam highlights late-14th-century Franconia, while the official website points to buildings from the 11th through 15th centuries and explicitly avoids assigning the game to one exact century. That distinction matters if you are looking for a rigorously dated simulation: Manor Lords presents an informed design frame rather than a single-year reconstruction.
Early Access status and what it means for your purchase
Salt and Soil’s planned launch
On October 13, 2026, Steam listed Salt and Soil as coming to Early Access on November 9, 2026 and said it was not yet available. The page also says the campaign is playable from start to finish, while the developer describes the build as unfinished and targets version 1.0 for the first half of 2027. Those statements mean the intended campaign scope exists, but content, balance, polish, and stability can still change substantially.

Because the planned date was close to the listing date, confirm the live status on the official Salt and Soil page before assuming the Early Access build has launched.
Manor Lords’ established Early Access build
Manor Lords entered Steam Early Access on April 26, 2024. Steam says the major mechanics and described features are present, while additional content, balance work, polish, and bug fixes are planned. It is therefore further along in public availability than Salt and Soil was at the October 13 listing snapshot, but it remains a changing project rather than a finished release.
For either game, read the current store description, system requirements, and update notes before buying. An Early Access purchase is a decision to accept iteration, not a guarantee that every planned feature is already complete.

- You enjoy family traits, relationships, councils, and succession as strategic mechanics.
- You prefer turn-based decisions that let you think before committing.
- You like campaigns whose meaning comes from consequences carried across generations.
- You are comfortable with an Early Access project whose planned release and feature set may change.
- You can meet the current broadband requirement for its Annual Family Council system.
Choose Manor Lords if these statements sound like you
- You want to design a settlement and watch it grow into a larger domain.
- You enjoy tracing production chains and fixing economic bottlenecks.
- You prefer a gridless layout in which roads and building placement shape the town.
- You want regional expansion and real-time tactical battles in the same campaign.
- You are interested in a medieval European-inspired setting without requiring one exact historical date.
- You would rather enter a game already in Early Access than wait for a planned launch.
A practical decision process
- Pick your scale. Select Salt and Soil for a household and homestead; select Manor Lords for a town, regions, and armies.
- Pick your preferred pressure. Choose Salt and Soil for relationship and succession decisions. Choose Manor Lords for logistics, construction, trade, and military timing.
- Pick your time model. Choose turn-based planning if you want to evaluate each decision at your own pace. Choose Manor Lords if a continuous simulation and real-time battles are part of the appeal.
- Check the setting. Choose the American frontier frame of Salt and Soil or the medieval European references of Manor Lords.
- Check availability and hardware. Confirm Salt and Soil’s live Early Access status and broadband requirement. Confirm that your Windows 10 64-bit system meets the current Manor Lords listing before purchase.
- Set your Early Access expectations. Neither listing should be treated as a final, immutable product. Salt and Soil’s page describes an unfinished build aimed at version 1.0 in the first half of 2027; Manor Lords continues to receive content, balance, polish, and bug-fixing work.
Bottom-line recommendation
Salt and Soil is the better fit for a player who measures progress through a family’s survival, relationships, and succession across a long frontier campaign. Its distinctive appeal is the intimacy of decisions: a council choice, a trade, or a labor assignment can define the household that the next generation receives.
Manor Lords is the better fit for a player who wants to build and defend a living medieval-inspired domain. Its distinctive appeal is systems scale: settlement layout, production chains, regional growth, and real-time battles continually influence one another.
They are not competing versions of the same game. Salt and Soil asks you to steward a lineage; Manor Lords asks you to engineer and command a settlement. Choose the one whose unit of concern—family or domain—matches the kind of history you want to create.
