Salt and Soil can be checked against separate Windows and macOS minimum specifications. On Windows, the published baseline is a 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 computer with an Intel Core i3-class processor, 4 GB of RAM, Intel UHD Graphics 620, 1 GB of free storage, broadband internet, and a DirectX-compatible sound card. On macOS, the baseline is macOS 10.15 Catalina, an Intel Core i5 or Apple M1/M2-or-better processor, 8 GB of RAM, Apple Silicon integrated graphics, 2 GB of free storage, broadband internet, and CoreAudio-compatible sound.
Those are minimums, not a smooth-play guarantee. The official Steam listing does not publish recommended specifications, a target frame rate, a target resolution, or independent hardware benchmarks. Use the instructions below to compare your own computer, then recheck the listing before installing because the game is still in development.
Official Salt and Soil minimum requirements
The Steam page lists different requirements for Windows and macOS. Compare your computer only with the section for its operating system; a Windows requirement should not be treated as a macOS requirement, and vice versa.

These specifications are publisher-listed minimums, not results from an independent test. The listing does not state which frame rate or resolution those minimum machines should achieve. It also does not provide a separate recommended tier, so there is no official higher specification to use as a performance target.

What each requirement means
Operating system
Windows users need a 64-bit installation of Windows 10 or Windows 11. A 32-bit edition does not match the published requirement, even if the computer has enough memory or a fast processor. The listing names macOS 10.15 Catalina for Apple computers. A Mac running an older release is below that stated baseline; a newer release still needs to meet the processor, memory, graphics, storage, internet, and sound conditions.
Processor
The Windows entry names an Intel Core i3 or an AMD equivalent, but it does not identify a specific generation or AMD model. Do not assume that every chip carrying an i3 label has identical capability: model generation, power limits, and the rest of the computer matter. On macOS, the stated baseline is an Intel Core i5 or Apple M1/M2 or better. The Apple wording covers the listed Apple Silicon families, while the separate graphics line identifies the integrated GPU used by those systems.
Memory
Windows requires 4 GB of installed RAM; macOS requires 8 GB. Installed memory is different from free disk space. A computer can have many gigabytes of storage available while still falling short on RAM. Check the installed amount reported by the operating system rather than estimating from the computer’s age or product name.

Graphics
The Windows listing specifically names Intel UHD Graphics 620. A processor name alone does not prove that the graphics requirement is met, because some computers use a different integrated GPU or a separate graphics card. On macOS, the listing specifies an Apple Silicon integrated GPU. The page does not name an equivalent discrete Mac GPU or publish a graphics-performance score, so it is not possible to turn the minimum into a list of tested graphics cards.
Storage
The listed installation allowance is 1 GB on Windows and 2 GB on macOS. Treat those figures as available-space requirements, not as the total capacity of the drive. Keep additional room for the operating system, updates, saves, and temporary files; the listing does not quantify that extra space.
Internet and sound
Both platforms require a broadband internet connection. No minimum download speed, latency, or offline mode is stated, so the word “broadband” is the limit of the published guidance. Windows calls for a DirectX-compatible sound card, while macOS calls for CoreAudio-compatible sound. These are platform audio frameworks rather than a recommendation to purchase a particular speaker, headset, or sound card.

How to check a Windows PC
Use the following checks to record the exact values on your computer. If a value is missing or ambiguous, write down the full model name and compare it with the Steam requirement instead of guessing from a short label.

- Confirm the Windows edition and architecture. Open Settings > System > About. Under Windows specifications, note the edition and version. Under Device specifications, find System type and verify that it says a 64-bit operating system. The requirement is Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit.
- Record the processor. In the same About page, read Processor and copy the complete model, including its generation or suffix. Compare that model with the published Intel Core i3 or AMD-equivalent baseline. The short name alone is not enough to establish graphics compatibility.
- Check installed RAM. Installed RAM appears in Settings > System > About. It must show at least 4 GB for the Windows minimum. Windows may report slightly less usable memory because the operating system or integrated graphics reserves part of it; the published figure refers to installed RAM.
- Identify the graphics device. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and record every adapter listed. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, choose Performance, and select GPU to see the active device. Compare the model with Intel UHD Graphics 620. If two adapters appear, note both rather than assuming the faster one is always selected.
- Measure free storage. Open File Explorer, select This PC, and read the free space on the drive where you plan to install the game. At least 1 GB must be available for the published Windows minimum. If the drive is nearly full, free more space before installation so updates and temporary files do not immediately consume the remaining capacity.
- Check connectivity and audio. Confirm that the computer can use your broadband connection and that Windows recognizes an audio output. The listing does not define a bandwidth number, and it does not require a special brand of peripheral; it specifies broadband internet and DirectX-compatible sound.
How to check a Mac
- Check the macOS release. Choose the Apple menu, open About This Mac, and read the macOS version. The stated minimum is macOS 10.15 Catalina. If the Mac cannot run Catalina, it does not meet the published operating-system baseline.
- Identify the processor family. In About This Mac, look for the processor description. Intel Macs need an Intel Core i5 or better according to the listing. Apple Silicon Macs should identify an M1, M2, or newer chip. If the screen displays only a generic description, open System Settings > General > About on newer macOS versions or use System Information for the full model.
- Verify memory. Read the Memory field in About This Mac or the About panel in System Settings. The macOS minimum is 8 GB. On Apple Silicon Macs, memory is unified, but the relevant comparison is still the installed amount reported by the system.
- Confirm graphics information. Open System Information and select Graphics/Displays. Apple Silicon systems use the integrated graphics identified by the chip family; the Steam listing does not specify a separate Mac graphics-card model. Intel Macs should be checked against the processor and the rest of the stated requirements together, because no independent benchmark is provided.
- Check available storage. Choose the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage (or About This Mac > Storage on older releases). The Mac requirement is 2 GB free. Leave practical headroom for updates and macOS temporary data even though the listing gives no additional allowance.
- Confirm internet and audio support. Verify that the Mac can connect through broadband internet and that an audio output is available through the system’s CoreAudio-compatible path. The published page does not specify a connection speed or require an external audio device.
Make a pass-or-fail comparison without overclaiming
Create a six-line checklist for your own machine: operating system, processor, RAM, graphics, free storage, and internet/audio support. Mark each line as meets, below, or uncertain. A computer should not be called compliant when one of the required fields is unknown.
- Meets: the reported value matches or exceeds the corresponding published minimum.
- Below: the operating system, memory, storage, or another named component is clearly under the listed value. Record the exact shortfall, such as “3 GB RAM installed; 4 GB required.”
- Uncertain: the component uses a different model name, an AMD processor with no stated equivalent, or a graphics device that cannot be matched confidently. Treat this as unresolved rather than silently assuming equivalence.
Passing every line means the computer matches the published minimum specification. It does not establish a frame rate, resolution, loading time, or overall smoothness because none of those outcomes is promised on the store page.

What to do if your computer is below a minimum
Identify the failing component first
Do not start with a generic hardware purchase. Write down whether the shortfall is the operating system, processor, RAM, graphics, storage, internet access, or audio support. The remedy depends on the computer: a desktop may allow a memory or storage change, while many laptops and Macs have components that cannot be upgraded after purchase.
Separate a storage problem from a hardware problem
Insufficient free space is the simplest item to diagnose, but deleting files does not fix inadequate RAM or graphics. Conversely, installing more memory does not create the 1 GB or 2 GB of disk space required by the relevant platform. Check the correct category before changing anything.
Be cautious with operating-system upgrades
Upgrading Windows or macOS can affect driver support, application compatibility, and available storage. Confirm that the specific computer supports the required operating-system release before attempting an upgrade. The requirements page does not provide a supported-device list or an upgrade procedure.

Do not infer a guaranteed result from a small requirement
A 4 GB Windows minimum or a 1 GB Windows storage allowance describes the publisher’s baseline, not a recommendation for a new purchase. There is no official recommended tier in the listing, so choosing hardware solely because it barely reaches one line gives no evidence about the experience you will receive.
Development status and changing requirements
Steam describes Salt and Soil: A Frontier Family Sim as a family settlement simulation and invites players to wishlist and follow its development. Because the game is in development, its requirements can change before release or during development updates. Check the official listing again immediately before buying or installing rather than relying indefinitely on a saved screenshot or an older specification table.
The developer also discloses that the game uses generative AI during gameplay for some Annual Family Council narrative text and structured choice outcomes based on the current campaign state. The disclosure says that generated council content is constrained by the historical setting, family data, localization rules, and gameplay schema, then validated before being shown. This explains a content system described on the store page; it does not add a separate hardware requirement to the published minimum list.
