Salt and Soil is a forthcoming single-player frontier family strategy sim in which you guide one household and its homestead rather than an anonymous city. The documented Jamestown Chronicle playtest is a 30-turn scenario beginning in 1607, asking you to balance limited labor, food, materials, construction, trade and family decisions. Start by protecting the household’s immediate needs, then expand only when labor and supplies support it.
The game is currently listed on Steam as coming soon, with access through a playtest route rather than a normal purchase. Availability, requirements and the playtest build can change, so check the live Steam listing before you begin.
What you are managing in Salt and Soil
Salt and Soil follows a single frontier family through changing conditions. Your settlement is the family’s home, workplace, store of supplies and political foothold; growth is valuable only when it keeps the household fed, equipped and able to respond to events. The official overview describes a campaign shaped by food, wood, metal, money, tools, goods, livestock, housing, buildings and labor, with changing markets, migration, neighboring settlements and threats affecting the plan. That makes the opening problem different from a conventional city-builder. You are not trying to maximize population or lay out a perfect grid. You are deciding which needs deserve scarce hands and materials now, which can wait, and how today’s choices leave the family positioned for the next year and the next generation.

The documented first scenario
The official playtest announcement calls the scenario Jamestown Chronicle: a 30-turn story about one frontier family near Jamestown, starting in 1607. Its stated tasks include managing limited labor, securing food and materials, building, trading and making family decisions. It is an early playtest, not a promise that every future release will use the same map, turn count or starting conditions. The announcement is published in the official Steam community hub.
Access, platform and requirements
Steam currently labels Salt and Soil as a single-player PC game that is coming soon rather than generally available for purchase. The listing provides the current playtest access route when one is open. Confirm the live page immediately before playing because an access test can close, change build or move to a different branch.

No physical edition, special peripheral or printed guide is identified in the official materials. The game is described as a digital Steam title, so the relevant preparation is access to the current build and a system that meets the live requirements.

Before you start a campaign
- Verify the build. Open the official Steam page, check whether the playtest is accepting participants and note any branch or update instructions.
- Read the scenario brief. If Jamestown Chronicle is available, remember that it is a finite 30-turn test beginning in 1607, not necessarily the complete campaign structure of the eventual release.
- Inventory the household. Identify the labor available to the family and the food, wood, metal, money, tools, goods and livestock shown by the current build. Public pages do not publish a universal starting inventory, so use the values on your own campaign screen.
- Separate survival from expansion. Mark the food and materials needed to keep the household operating before you reserve anything for optional construction or trade.
- Identify the next decision point. Decide what information would make you change course: a shortage, a market opportunity, a migration event, a threat or a family issue. This prevents you from treating the opening plan as permanent.
The public descriptions do not provide a verified click-by-click tutorial, exact starting inventory or authoritative first building. The routine above is a cautious way to read the systems that are documented, not a hidden developer script.
A safe opening routine for your first settlement
Use the following priorities as a flexible framework. They are strategic deductions from the published constraints, not tested instructions or a guaranteed winning build order.
1. Count labor before assigning work
Labor is explicitly limited in the playtest. Every gathering, production, building or trading task competes for the same household capacity. Before committing an action, ask which other job will be delayed and whether that delay creates a food or safety problem. A plan that consumes every available worker can look efficient while leaving no capacity to respond to an unexpected event.
Keep a small margin whenever the interface allows it. The exact size of a useful reserve depends on the current scenario and is not published; the principle is to avoid making the household unable to react when conditions change.

2. Secure food and essential materials
The playtest announcement identifies food and materials as core tasks, while the store description emphasizes stretching scarce supplies. Treat food as a near-term obligation and materials as the input that lets you repair, build or produce later. If an expansion consumes the stock needed for the next basic task, postpone the expansion.
Read the campaign’s demand and supply information rather than assuming one resource is always most important. A household with food but no tools, wood or metal may still be unable to turn that food into a stable settlement. Conversely, accumulating materials while neglecting food creates a different failure. The game’s systems are presented as a set of linked constraints, not a single-resource race.
3. Price construction against the whole plan
Construction is a documented activity, but the official pages do not state exact costs or name a universally correct first building. Compare a proposed structure’s resource and labor requirements with the food, tools and other work you must still complete. Build when the structure addresses a current bottleneck or creates capacity you can actually staff; wait when it merely consumes a reserve.
Do not copy an opening order from another game or assume that the first available building is automatically optimal. The playtest is expected to change, and the same choice can have different value after a market, migration or family event.
4. Use trade to solve a specific shortage
The official descriptions include trade with neighboring people and changing markets. Approach a trade as a response to a concrete need or opportunity: obtain something the household cannot produce in time, convert a surplus before it loses value, or preserve labor that would otherwise be tied up in a difficult task.
No public source establishes a universally best item to buy or sell, a fixed exchange rate or a risk-free trading partner. Judge the offer shown by your current market, the resources you must retain and the consequences of reducing your reserve. A profitable exchange on paper can be poor if it leaves the family unable to feed itself or complete a safety-critical task.
5. Re-plan whenever the situation changes
Salt and Soil describes shifting resources and markets, migration, settlement changes, neighbors and threats. After each major event, recheck labor, food, materials, money and the family’s immediate exposure before continuing the old queue. Canceling or delaying a plan can be the correct decision when the conditions that justified it no longer exist.

How to think about the settlement’s main constraints

This table is a decision aid, not a list of hidden formulas. Exact production rates, upkeep values and construction prices have not been published on the official pages, so use the numbers displayed in your build.

The annual cycle and Family Council
The announced campaign loop combines production, construction, trade, resource management and labor decisions during the year. At year’s end, a Family Council considers what actually happened. The official store description says the council can draw on hunger or surplus, debt or growth, births, deaths, marriages, quarrels, alliances and threats; its decisions can influence family memory and inheritance. That makes the council part of the strategy rather than a detached story screen.
Plan for the year you are creating
At the beginning of a cycle, choose a manageable priority: stabilize food, gather a material, complete a necessary structure or exploit a favorable exchange. Keep the objective narrow enough that a setback does not invalidate every other task. As the year unfolds, record which choices improved the household and which created pressure. This mental record helps you interpret the council’s dilemma in context.
Read the council as a continuity decision
A council choice can affect how the family remembers the year and what it passes forward. Consider both the immediate benefit and the precedent it sets for the homestead. A decision that protects the household today may limit growth; a riskier option may create opportunity but expose the family to a future shortage or conflict. The game does not publish a universal correct answer because the council is informed by your campaign’s particular events.
Do not confuse generated prose with generated history
The Steam listing discloses that some Annual Family Council narrative text and structured choice outcomes use generative AI constrained by campaign state and the game’s setting, then validated before presentation. This disclosure applies to the council presentation and outcomes described there; it is not evidence that every system, event or historical detail is generated by AI.

The 30-turn specification gives the playtest a finite horizon. It does not publish official early-, middle- or late-game phases, so use the following pacing lens rather than treating it as a scripted walkthrough.

These are planning categories for a short test, not claims about hidden turn triggers, guaranteed events or an optimal score. The developer characterizes the build as an early playtest, so balance and available actions may change.

Responding to neighbors, traders and threats
The official store description names Indigenous nations, neighboring settlements, traders, migrants and bandit camps among the groups and pressures a household may encounter. It says players can trade, cooperate, negotiate or face conflict, with possible effects on safety, resources, reputation and the family’s future. Treat these as distinct relationships rather than reducing every outside group to a generic obstacle.
When cooperation or negotiation is available
Compare the immediate resource value with the longer-term relationship. A deal that saves labor or prevents a shortage may be worth more than a short-lived gain from taking every available exchange. Keep enough supplies to withstand a reversal; the official material does not promise that any relationship remains permanently safe.
When conflict or bandit activity appears
Re-evaluate exposure before pursuing construction or trade. Protect food, tools and the labor needed to recover from disruption. Because the public pages do not specify combat rules, unit statistics or fixed threat probabilities, do not assume a particular defensive building, force size or timing will always work.
When migrants or settlement changes alter demand
Use the new situation to reassess markets and labor. Additional people may change opportunities and obligations rather than simply providing free workers. A growing settlement can create demand for goods while also increasing the consequences of a supply shortfall.

Spending every resource immediately
Symptom: a building or trade leaves no food, material or labor margin. Recovery: stop optional work, restore the most urgent supply and postpone projects that do not address the current problem.

Assigning all labor at once
Symptom: an event arrives and the household has no available capacity. Recovery: release lower-priority assignments and preserve a flexible worker allocation when the interface permits it.
Treating a market price as permanent
Symptom: a trade that looked favorable becomes harmful after conditions shift. Recovery: reassess the new offer and keep enough stock to meet household needs before trading again.
Building because a structure is available
Symptom: construction consumes inputs needed for food, tools or another essential task. Recovery: return to the bottleneck analysis; build only when the structure’s benefit justifies its complete labor and material cost.
Ignoring the Family Council until the end
Symptom: the council presents a choice whose context you no longer remember. Recovery: note major shortages, gains, relationships and family events during the year so you can weigh continuity and inheritance effects deliberately.
Assuming the playtest is a finished tutorial
Symptom: a menu, balance value or outcome differs from a guide written for another build. Recovery: trust the current interface and official update information, and treat unexpected behavior as possible playtest roughness rather than proof that your system is misconfigured.
What is not yet established publicly
Official pages reviewed for Salt and Soil do not publish exact starting inventories, construction costs, production rates, button-by-button instructions, a verified first-year build order or a universal best trade. They also do not establish that the 30-turn Jamestown Chronicle will be the only scenario in the full release. Any guide claiming precise opening numbers or a guaranteed winning sequence is going beyond the currently documented information.
Use the live game to read the values that matter in your particular build, and adjust your plan when an update changes them. The developer’s overview is available at delosx.com, while access and system details are maintained on the Steam store page and playtest announcements in the community hub.
