Salesforce and IBM are not interchangeable technology investments. Salesforce is a focused customer-relationship-management and enterprise-applications company whose recent growth case centers on Agentforce, Data 360 and its subscription platform. IBM combines software, consulting and infrastructure, with hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence as strategic themes. Salesforce currently offers the clearer reported growth profile in the available results; IBM offers broader business exposure and a much longer dividend-increase record. Neither stock can be called the better portfolio choice without a date-matched valuation, a current IBM quarter comparable with Salesforce’s latest quarter, and a decision about your own risk, income and diversification needs.
The short answer
Choose the business exposure first, then test the price. Salesforce generally suits an investor seeking concentrated exposure to enterprise applications, recurring subscription revenue and a higher-growth software narrative. IBM generally suits an investor who values a mix of software, consulting and infrastructure, wants exposure to hybrid-cloud and AI services, and places greater weight on established cash distributions and business diversification.
The evidence available for this comparison is not period-matched. Salesforce’s latest retrieved quarter is the quarter ended July 31, 2026 (Q2 FY27). IBM’s latest retrieved quarterly release covers the quarter ended March 31, 2026 (Q1 2026). IBM’s Q2 2026 results and a date-matched market-price and valuation set are not available here. That prevents a defensible claim that either stock is cheaper, safer or superior at the current quote.

What Salesforce’s business gives a portfolio
A concentrated enterprise-application franchise
Salesforce is centered on customer relationship management and related enterprise applications. Its platform is designed to connect sales, service, marketing, commerce, analytics and data workflows. That concentration can make the investment easier to understand: demand is tied largely to companies buying, expanding or consolidating business applications.
Concentration also creates exposure to the software budget cycle. If customers delay projects, reduce seats, standardize on fewer vendors or demand lower prices, a focused applications company can feel the change quickly. The same focus can work in Salesforce’s favor when customers prefer one platform, higher integration and fewer separate tools.
Recent scale and growth
Salesforce reported FY26 revenue of $41.5 billion, up 10% year over year, in results announced February 25, 2026. It also reported FY26 operating cash flow of $15.0 billion and free cash flow of $14.4 billion. These are company-reported figures for that fiscal year; they do not establish what the next year will produce.

Current remaining performance obligations (cRPO) were $33.5 billion, up 14% year over year. cRPO indicates contracted revenue expected over the coming period, so it can provide more forward visibility than a single quarter’s revenue, but it is not a guarantee of future growth or margin.
Guidance and acquisitions
Salesforce’s updated FY27 revenue outlook was $46.1 billion to $46.4 billion, representing 11% to 12% year-over-year growth. The company said slightly above three percentage points of that growth would come from Informatica. The outlook also incorporated expected contributions from the pending Contentful and Fin transactions at the time of the August release. Salesforce later reported that the Fin acquisition was completed on September 10, 2026.

Therefore, the 11% to 12% outlook should not be described as organic growth. Acquired revenue can increase reported sales while integration, retention, product overlap and purchase costs affect the quality of that growth. Investors should separate reported growth, constant-currency growth where provided, and management’s estimate of acquisition contribution.
AI as a product and execution question
Salesforce reported Agentforce annual recurring revenue above $1.5 billion in Q2 FY27. The company presents Agentforce, Data 360 and connected applications as growth engines. Chief executive Marc Benioff said in the FY26 results release: “Agentic AI is a tailwind for our business, and we’re well on our way to $63 billion in revenue in FY30.” That statement is management’s strategic view and long-range target, not a guaranteed outcome.

Agentforce ARR is a useful company-reported adoption indicator, but it does not by itself prove that AI products will create durable incremental revenue, preserve software margins or reduce customer churn. Definitions of new metrics can evolve as products mature. Check whether future disclosures show sustained renewal, expansion, gross-margin and cash-flow performance rather than relying on an ARR headline alone.
What IBM’s business gives a portfolio
A diversified technology model
IBM spans software, consulting and infrastructure. Its 2025 annual report describes a strategy organized around these businesses, with hybrid cloud and AI as central focus areas. Software can provide recurring revenue and intellectual-property leverage; consulting ties IBM to implementation and transformation budgets; infrastructure gives it exposure to mission-critical systems and specialized workloads.
This mix is broader than Salesforce’s application focus. Diversification can reduce dependence on one product category, but it also makes IBM’s results harder to interpret. Services growth, software retention, infrastructure cycles, currency movements and large client projects can move in different directions. A single consolidated growth rate may conceal strong performance in one segment and weakness in another.

IBM’s available outlook
IBM’s Q1 2026 results release, issued April 22, 2026, said management expected more than 5% full-year constant-currency revenue growth. That is a company outlook, not a realized full-year result and not a substitute for IBM’s Q2 2026 results. Constant-currency growth excludes the effect of exchange-rate movements; it should not be compared directly with a reported growth rate unless the definitions and periods match.
The same release reported $11.8 billion in cash, restricted cash and marketable securities for the quarter ended March 31, 2026. Cash is a balance-sheet snapshot, not free cash flow and not an automatic measure of financial safety. Debt maturities, pension obligations, acquisitions, capital spending and the cash needs of consulting projects all matter when assessing IBM’s flexibility.
Hybrid cloud and AI are strategies, not proof of outperformance
IBM’s published strategy positions hybrid cloud and AI across its software, consulting and infrastructure businesses. That gives IBM several ways to participate in enterprise AI adoption: customers may need software, integration, governance, modernization and infrastructure rather than a single application subscription.
However, a strategic position does not establish that IBM’s AI or hybrid-cloud offerings will outperform Salesforce’s applications or produce a superior shareholder return. Look for evidence such as software growth, recurring revenue, bookings, backlog conversion, consulting utilization, margins and cash generation over matched reporting periods.
Growth and visibility: how the evidence compares
| Measure | Salesforce | IBM | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latest quarterly revenue | $11.3 billion in Q2 FY27, ended July 31, 2026 | Not stated for a matched quarter in the available evidence | Do not rank the companies using unmatched periods |
| Latest quarterly growth | 11% year over year | Not stated for a matched quarter | IBM’s more than 5% figure is a full-year constant-currency outlook |
| Forward visibility | $33.5 billion cRPO, up 14% year over year | Not stated in the available Q1 summary | Contracted obligations help visibility but do not guarantee profit |
| Acquisition contribution | Slightly above three percentage points of FY27 growth attributed to Informatica; Contentful and Fin contributions included in the August outlook | Not stated in the available evidence | Separate acquired growth from organic operating momentum |
| Long-range target | Management discussed a path to $63 billion of revenue in FY30 | No comparable attributable target surfaced | Treat targets as aspirations, not forecasts you can underwrite without milestones |
Salesforce has the more detailed recent growth disclosure in this evidence set. That does not mean IBM is a slower or worse investment; it means the comparison is incomplete until IBM’s corresponding quarter and definitions are available.

Profitability and cash generation
Salesforce’s disclosed profitability and cash
For FY26, Salesforce disclosed a GAAP operating margin of 20.1% and a non-GAAP operating margin of 34.1%. GAAP includes expenses such as stock-based compensation and amortization that non-GAAP measures may adjust. Compare GAAP with GAAP and non-GAAP with non-GAAP; mixing the two can make one company appear more profitable than it is under the same accounting basis.
Salesforce generated $15.0 billion of operating cash flow and $14.4 billion of free cash flow in FY26. Free cash flow is generally operating cash flow after capital expenditures, but the exact company definition and reconciliation should be checked in the filing when making a detailed model. Strong cash generation can fund acquisitions, buybacks, dividends and debt reduction, but allocation choices determine how much reaches shareholders.
Why an IBM margin comparison is not yet fair
The available IBM material does not provide a current, period-matched GAAP operating margin, non-GAAP margin, operating cash flow and free cash flow set. Without those figures, declaring Salesforce more profitable or IBM more efficient would overstate the evidence. IBM’s business mix also means consolidated margins may not be directly comparable to a pure enterprise-application company’s margins even after the numbers are collected.
Dividends, buybacks and income expectations
Salesforce announced a $0.44 quarterly dividend on May 28, 2026 and reported $1.6 billion in FY26 dividends. The dollar amount per share tells you the payment, not the yield. Yield requires a share price on a stated date, and the yield changes as the price changes.

IBM’s Q1 2026 release noted that its quarterly dividend had been increased for 31 consecutive years. That is a notable income-history fact, but a long increase streak does not guarantee future increases, a particular payout ratio or a higher total return. Assess IBM’s dividend alongside earnings, free cash flow, debt service and capital-allocation priorities.

Income-oriented investors should also decide whether they need current cash, growing cash distributions or total return. A lower-growth company with a longer dividend record may fit an income objective, while a company retaining more cash for product investment or acquisitions may fit a different objective. Neither dividend fact establishes current suitability without the share price and the investor’s tax and liquidity circumstances.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Valuation is the missing decision axis
The available sources do not provide date-matched share prices or valuation multiples for Salesforce and IBM. Consequently, they do not support the labels “cheap,” “expensive” or “undervalued.” Operating growth alone cannot determine which stock offers the better prospective return.
Before buying either stock, collect prices from the same date and calculate comparable measures such as forward price-to-earnings, enterprise value to operating cash flow, free-cash-flow yield and, where meaningful, revenue or recurring-revenue multiples. Use the same fiscal-year assumptions, currency treatment and share-count basis. For Salesforce, test how much of the forecast multiple depends on acquired Informatica, Contentful or Fin revenue. For IBM, separate software economics from consulting and infrastructure economics rather than applying one multiple without adjustment.

Potentially appropriate when
- You want concentrated exposure to CRM and enterprise applications.
- You are comfortable underwriting double-digit reported growth while distinguishing organic performance from acquisition contribution.
- You value subscription visibility and want to track cRPO, retention, expansion and AI-product adoption.
- You can tolerate execution risk from integrating acquisitions and commercializing Agentforce and Data 360.
- Your portfolio already has income assets and does not depend on this position for a particular dividend yield.
Questions to answer first
- How much of FY27 growth remains after removing the stated Informatica contribution and other acquired revenue?
- Are Agentforce customers renewing and expanding at attractive margins, or is ARR growth being purchased through discounts and implementation costs?
- Does the valuation assume the FY30 $63 billion revenue ambition will be achieved?
- Would a slowdown in corporate software budgets make your portfolio too concentrated?
Which portfolio profile fits IBM?
Potentially appropriate when
- You prefer a diversified mix of software, consulting and infrastructure.
- You want exposure to hybrid-cloud and AI adoption through products and services rather than only a CRM platform.
- A long record of annual dividend increases is relevant to your income framework.
- You accept that services and infrastructure cycles can make growth less uniform than a focused software model.
- You are willing to wait for matched quarterly results and current valuation data before sizing the position.
Questions to answer first
- What did IBM’s Q2 2026 results show for software, consulting and infrastructure separately?
- Is the more-than-5% constant-currency outlook being converted into reported revenue and free cash flow?
- How much cash remains after dividends, debt repayment, capital spending and acquisitions?
- Are hybrid-cloud and AI offerings producing measurable recurring revenue and margin improvement?
Risks that can change the comparison
Salesforce-specific risks
- Acquisition dependence: The FY27 outlook includes acquired revenue, so reported growth may exceed organic growth.
- Integration risk: Combining Informatica and other transactions can create product overlap, retention challenges and unexpected costs.
- AI monetization risk: Agentforce ARR and management commentary show activity and expectations, not proof of durable profits.
- Application-budget sensitivity: Customers can delay projects, consolidate vendors or negotiate lower prices during difficult economic periods.
- Metric changes: New AI and recurring-revenue measures may evolve, complicating comparisons across quarters.
IBM-specific risks
- Mixed-business complexity: Weakness in consulting or infrastructure can offset software progress.
- Forecast risk: More than 5% full-year constant-currency growth is management guidance, not a delivered result.
- Execution across AI and hybrid cloud: Strategic positioning must translate into bookings, recurring revenue, margins and cash.
- Currency and services exposure: Constant-currency growth can differ from reported growth, while consulting depends on utilization and project demand.
- Capital-allocation trade-offs: Dividends, debt, acquisitions and investment compete for available cash.
A practical decision process
- Set the portfolio job. Decide whether the position is meant to provide growth, income, diversification, or a combination. Write down your time horizon, maximum acceptable loss and liquidity need.
- Choose the exposure. Select Salesforce if CRM and application concentration is intentional. Select IBM if a broader software-services-infrastructure mix is intentional.
- Normalize the reporting periods. Obtain IBM’s Q2 2026 results and compare them with Salesforce’s Q2 FY27 only after aligning dates, currency definitions and accounting measures.
- Build a growth bridge. For Salesforce, separate organic growth from Informatica and other acquisition contributions. For IBM, reconcile reported and constant-currency growth by segment.
- Compare GAAP financials. Use revenue, operating income, operating margin, operating cash flow and free cash flow on the same basis. Put non-GAAP adjustments in a separate view.
- Test the AI thesis. Look for customer adoption, renewal, expansion, recurring revenue, gross margin and cash-flow evidence. Do not treat product launches or executive targets as proof.
- Model capital returns. Record dividends, repurchases, debt changes and acquisition spending. Calculate yield from a dated share price rather than from a dividend-per-share figure alone.
- Value both stocks on the same date. Use consistent forward estimates and scenario-test slower growth, higher integration costs and lower margins.
- Size for uncertainty. If the valuation or IBM period match is unresolved, use a smaller position or wait for the missing disclosure instead of forcing a binary choice.
- Define a review trigger. Revisit the thesis when growth, cRPO or recurring revenue changes materially, an acquisition alters the outlook, AI metrics are redefined, dividend policy changes, or valuation moves outside your range.
What this comparison does not establish
- It does not establish a current dividend yield for either company.
- It does not establish which stock has the lower valuation.
- It does not provide a fair current margin or cash-flow comparison because the IBM figures are not period-matched and sufficiently complete in the available material.
- It does not prove that Salesforce’s Agentforce strategy or IBM’s hybrid-cloud and AI strategy will meet management expectations.
- It does not account for your existing holdings, tax position, risk tolerance, time horizon or need for cash.
Bottom line
Salesforce is the more focused growth-and-applications choice in the disclosed figures: FY26 revenue was $41.5 billion, Q2 FY27 revenue grew 11% to $11.3 billion, and cRPO grew 14% to $33.5 billion. Those results come with acquisition-related growth and AI-execution risks. IBM is the broader, more diversified enterprise-technology choice, with software, consulting and infrastructure, a stated hybrid-cloud and AI strategy, a more-than-5% constant-currency 2026 growth outlook, and a 31-year dividend-increase record noted in its Q1 release.
The portfolio decision should wait for two missing pieces: IBM results aligned with Salesforce’s latest period and date-matched valuation data. Until then, the defensible conclusion is not that one stock wins, but that each fits a different investment job.
