SafeBites is described by its author as a browser-based AI meal planner that turns a list of available ingredients into recipes tailored to a roommate’s stated food allergies. It may help brainstorm meals, but a generated recipe cannot establish that a meal is safe: shoppers still need to check product labels, and cooks must account for cross-contact.
What SafeBites is designed to do
In a project submission posted October 3, 2026, author Aditya Raj describes SafeBites as a tool for deciding what to cook from ingredients left in a shared fridge. A user enters ingredients on hand, states allergy restrictions, and receives recipe suggestions intended to exclude those allergens. Raj says the project uses static HTML, vanilla JavaScript, and Tailwind CSS, with Gemini API calls made from the browser.
That is the author’s description of the project, not an independent test of its features or results. The submission provides no user-study results, safety evaluation, or measured rate of allergen exclusion. It does not establish that SafeBites has been medically validated or can guarantee an allergy-safe meal.

What “zero backend” means for privacy and security
“Zero backend” describes the architecture Raj claims for the app: it does not use a project-owned server to handle its application logic. It does not mean that information stays on the device. Because the submission says the browser makes Gemini API calls, information sent in those requests goes to an external service. The submission does not document data retention or the exact API-key configuration.

Google’s documentation for a separate full-stack workflow explains using a server-side secret so an API key is not exposed in the browser. That describes a security approach for that workflow; it does not establish how SafeBites itself stores or restricts its key. See Google AI Studio’s full-stack app documentation.
Why a generated recipe cannot verify allergy safety
A recipe generator works with the information supplied to it. An ingredient name such as “sauce,” “bread,” or “seasoning” does not reveal a particular packaged product’s full formulation, current label, manufacturing conditions, or the way it was handled in a shared kitchen. An AI-generated exclusion is therefore not a substitute for checking the food itself.

For U.S. packaged-food labeling, FDA identifies nine major allergens: milk, egg, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts, soybeans, and sesame. FDA advises people with food allergies to read the entire ingredient list. A “Contains” statement can help when present, but it does not replace checking the ingredient information. See FDA’s guidance on reading food labels.

A practical way to use an AI meal planner
- Use it for ideas, not clearance. Treat a suggested recipe as a starting point. Do not infer that a recipe is safe just because the model says it excluded an allergen.
- Identify the actual products. Check each packaged ingredient’s full ingredient list and any “Contains” statement. Do not rely on a generic ingredient name or an old label.
- Take advisory wording seriously. Because advisory statements are voluntary and lack a uniform meaning, do not rank phrases such as “may contain” as though they were standardized risk levels.
- Consider preparation in the shared kitchen. Verify that cooking tools, surfaces, storage, and handling meet the allergic person’s needs; a generated recipe cannot assess cross-contact in a household.
- Ask the person with the allergy about their requirements. When the product label or preparation conditions leave uncertainty, do not let an AI answer settle it.
What is and is not established about SafeBites
| Question | What the project submission says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| What does it do? | It accepts available ingredients and allergy restrictions, then generates recipes intended to fit them. | Whether every suggestion excludes the relevant allergen or is safe to prepare. |
| What is the stated architecture? | Static HTML, vanilla JavaScript, Tailwind CSS, and Gemini API calls from the browser. | That no information is transmitted to a third party, or how data is retained. |
| How are exclusions handled? | The author says prompt engineering is used to enforce allergen exclusions. | Validation results, safety testing, or a measured safety rate. |
| Can the project be inspected or reused? | The submission links a repository and deployed demo and says the source is open to forking. | The available project text does not establish the repository’s license terms or details such as exact prompt behavior, error handling, and API-key restrictions. |
FDA guidance context
FDA’s food-allergies topic page describes its January 2025 final Edition 5 guidance on food-allergen labeling and notes a virtual public meeting on food-allergen thresholds held February 18–20, 2026. These are regulatory context, not evidence about SafeBites’ performance. See FDA’s Food Allergies page.
