Choose Safari if you mainly use Apple devices, want Apple’s tracking-protection defaults, and rely on iCloud continuity. Choose Chrome if your browsing follows a Google Account, you need Chrome Web Store extensions, or you move between Windows, macOS, and Linux. Neither browser is the universal winner: privacy settings, account choices, extensions, hardware, and the sites you use all affect the result.
Safari and Chrome at a glance
| Decision area | Safari | Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy defaults | Apple describes Intelligent Tracking Prevention, third-party-cookie blocking by default, URL-tracking-parameter removal in Private Browsing, IP-address hiding from known trackers, and restricted extension access by default. | Google combines Safe Browsing with configurable privacy, usage-statistics, crash-reporting, URL-sharing, personalization, and sync controls. |
| Cloud account | iCloud | Google Account |
| Syncable browser data | Tabs, tab groups, settings, installed extensions, bookmarks, Reading List, AutoFill information, and history can sync on supported Apple devices. Private Browsing tabs are excluded. | Bookmarks, history, open tabs, saved passwords, payment information, settings, and extension information can sync, depending on enabled categories. |
| Desktop extension source | App Store Safari Extensions category | Chrome Web Store |
| Extension access controls | Extensions are subject to their own terms and privacy practices. | Access can be limited to extension interaction, the current site, selected sites, or all sites. |
| Device ecosystem | Apple hardware, including Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch continuity described by Apple. | Windows, macOS, and Linux desktops, plus other devices where Chrome and a Google Account are supported. |
| Published performance claim | Apple says Safari is “+45% faster on average at loading frequently visited websites than Chrome” and offers “Up to 5 hours more streaming videos compared with Chrome.” | No equivalent independent result is established here. |
The table separates product features from marketing claims. Apple’s speed and battery figures are Apple’s own statements, not a matched independent benchmark, and extension catalogs change over time.
Both browsers are free to download and use; the meaningful costs are setup time, account storage, and any privacy or compatibility trade-offs. You do not need a special laptop, accessory, router, or other physical product to make the choice.

What Safari blocks or limits by design
Apple builds several anti-tracking measures into Safari rather than requiring an extension. Intelligent Tracking Prevention limits cross-site tracking behavior, and Apple says third-party cookies used for tracking are blocked by default. In Private Browsing, Safari removes known tracking parameters from URLs and uses separate browsing sessions. Apple also says Safari hides a user’s IP address from known trackers.

Safari limits an extension’s visibility into browsing by default. That reduces the amount of information an extension receives before you grant additional access, but it does not make every extension harmless. An extension can still have its own data practices, terms, and security risks.
Private Browsing is not an anonymity service. WebKit describes separate private sessions and proxying through Private Relay for tabs, and Apple’s legal disclosure says Safari may send information calculated from a website address to Google Safe Browsing and to Apple when checking for fraud or detected malware. Those checks are safety functions, not proof that browsing is invisible to every network, site, or service. Your internet provider, employer, school network, the site itself, and a signed-in account may still associate activity with you.
How Chrome’s privacy model differs
Chrome combines browser-level protections with choices you make in settings and your Google Account. Safe Browsing warns about dangerous sites and downloads. Google also documents controls for account personalization, usage statistics, crash reports, and URL-related metrics.
Google says usage statistics and crash reports are enabled by default and can be turned off. URL metrics are sent only when both Help improve Chrome’s features and performance and Make searches and browsing better are enabled. That qualification matters: it would be inaccurate to say Chrome sends every URL you visit in every configuration. Safe Browsing checks and optional diagnostic reporting are separate decisions from whether you sync history or passwords.
Chrome Sync is a separate account-backed feature. Turning on sync can associate browser data with your Google Account, so privacy decisions include both Chrome’s local protections and the categories you choose to store in the account. Signing out, disabling a category, or using a separate profile changes what follows you, but it does not erase copies that may already exist on a device or account.
Is Safari more private than Chrome?
Safari has stronger anti-tracking defaults in several areas, while Chrome exposes more configurable choices around diagnostics, personalization, Safe Browsing, and account sync. “More private” depends on the behavior you care about: cross-site tracking, diagnostic reporting, cloud storage, extension access, or security warnings.
- Choose Safari when built-in tracking restrictions and Apple’s device-level continuity are your priorities.
- Choose Chrome when you need granular Google controls and are willing to review diagnostic, personalization, and sync settings.
- In either browser, treat extensions as separate software and grant only the access they need.
Neither browser should be described as private in an absolute sense. A browser can reduce tracking while still storing bookmarks, passwords, or history in a cloud account, and a privacy-focused browser can still expose data to a badly chosen extension.

Performance and battery: what is known and what is not
Apple’s published comparison
Apple’s current Safari product page claims Safari is “+45% faster on average at loading frequently visited websites than Chrome.” Apple also claims “Up to 5 hours more streaming videos compared with Chrome.” These are vendor claims framed around Apple hardware. The underlying page should be checked for its current footnotes and test conditions because the figures can change with methodology, operating-system versions, and product updates.
Why the figures do not predict every computer
No current independent test using the same device, operating system, browser versions, sites, tabs, extensions, and workload has been established for this comparison. Consequently, you should not treat the Apple figures as a universal result or assume Chrome will always use more battery.
Actual responsiveness and endurance vary with processor and memory, browser version, operating-system power management, network conditions, video format, open tabs, background pages, site scripts, fan or thermal limits, and installed extensions. A browser that is faster in one workload can be less efficient in another. A page that is already cached can produce a very different result from a first visit over a busy Wi-Fi connection.
How to compare them on your own setup
- Use the same computer, power mode, network, display brightness, and operating-system version for both tests.
- Install the same sites or services you routinely use, and disable unrelated extensions first.
- Run the same set of pages, with the same number of tabs and the same video resolution, rather than comparing an empty browser with a heavily customized one.
- Repeat each task several times and note page responsiveness, fan noise, memory pressure, and battery percentage over the same interval.
- Then repeat with your normal extensions enabled. An extension can change the result more than the browser choice itself.
This method gives you a workload-specific decision instead of turning a vendor average into a promise about your laptop. Test after browser and operating-system updates if battery life is important, because either vendor can change power behavior between versions.

Extensions: catalog size, compatibility, and permissions
Chrome Web Store extensions
Chrome desktop extensions are installed through the Chrome Web Store. When an extension requests access, read the permission prompt rather than accepting it automatically. Google’s permission guidance identifies access to website data, browsing history, and tabs as potentially sensitive. An extension that reads every page can potentially see form content or account information displayed on those pages.
Chrome lets you restrict an extension’s site access to the extension interaction, the current site, specific sites, or all sites. Limiting access is useful for an extension that only needs to work on one service. Revisit the setting if the extension fails on a site you intentionally want to use. Do not assume a popular listing is risk-free: check the developer, update history, stated data practices, and whether the requested permission matches the feature.
Safari extensions and converted web extensions
Safari extensions are distributed in the App Store’s Safari Extensions category. Apple says web extensions built for other browsers can be converted to support Safari on Apple platforms, but conversion does not mean every Chrome extension is available or equivalent in Safari. Developers may omit features, publish a separate build, or support only certain Apple operating systems.

Safari’s default restriction on extension visibility is a useful starting point, not a substitute for examining the developer. Apple’s legal information makes clear that an extension’s own privacy terms and practices apply. An extension can therefore introduce tracking, data retention, or security exposure that is not part of Safari itself.

Syncing: iCloud versus Google Account
Safari and iCloud continuity
Safari uses iCloud to carry browser information across supported Apple devices. Apple documents syncing for tabs, tab groups, settings, installed extensions, bookmarks, Reading List, AutoFill information, and history. This model is most convenient when your everyday devices are Apple products signed in to the same iCloud account.
Apple’s description includes continuity among Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. The exact options can vary by operating-system version and account settings, so check the iCloud Safari toggle on each device rather than assuming every item is enabled.
Private Browsing tabs are not stored in iCloud and do not appear as synced tabs on other devices. That separation is useful when you want a temporary session without leaving it in your normal cross-device history. It does not prevent a website from keeping its own records or a network from observing traffic.
iCloud continuity does not turn Safari into a cross-platform browser. If your regular workflow includes Windows or Linux, Safari is not the practical way to carry the same browser profile between those systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChrome and Google Account sync
Chrome Sync uses a Google Account. Google lists bookmarks, history, open tabs, saved passwords, payment information, settings, and extension information among the data that can sync. After signing in on another device, you can access the enabled parts of the same profile.
Sync categories are choices, not an all-or-nothing requirement. Review which categories are enabled before assuming that a device has received—or has not received—your history, passwords, payment information, or open tabs. Account-associated data also deserves the same care as any other cloud-stored personal information. On a shared computer, signing into a full profile can expose more than the tabs you intended to open.

Which sync model fits?
- Mostly Apple devices: Safari’s iCloud tabs, tab groups, history, and settings provide the most natural continuity.
- Mixed desktop operating systems: Chrome’s Google Account model is designed for moving a profile between Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Minimal cloud storage: Keep sync limited to the categories you actually need, regardless of browser.
- Shared or borrowed devices: Avoid signing into a full browser profile unless you understand what data will be stored locally and synchronized.
- Sensitive sessions: Use a separate profile or Private Browsing, then verify that passwords, history, and open tabs are not being saved where you do not expect.
Device and workflow scenarios
Pick Safari for an Apple-centered setup
Safari is the straightforward choice when your main devices are a Mac, iPhone, and iPad, and you want tabs, tab groups, bookmarks, history, settings, and extensions to follow you through iCloud. It also suits readers who prefer anti-tracking features enabled as part of the browser design instead of assembling protection through add-ons.
Pick Chrome for Google-centered or cross-platform work
Chrome is the better fit when your work depends on a Google Account, Chrome Web Store extensions, or a desktop mix that includes Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its sync categories and extension ecosystem can reduce friction when you move between those systems.
Use both when the workloads are genuinely different
You do not have to make one browser serve every purpose. For example, Safari can handle personal Apple-device continuity while Chrome supports a work profile or a site that requires a Chrome extension. Keep accounts and extensions separated, and check which browser is storing history, passwords, and open tabs before assuming a session is private.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Requirements, costs, and common pitfalls
Safari’s practical requirement is Apple hardware and an Apple account for iCloud continuity. Chrome is available for desktop workflows on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with Google Account sync optional. In both cases, features can vary by operating-system version, account settings, administrator policies, and extension support.
The most common mistake is treating sync as a simple on/off switch. A browser may sync only selected categories, while a user may forget that passwords, payment information, history, or open tabs were enabled. Another mistake is equating Private Browsing with invisibility: it mainly changes local session storage and does not erase a site’s records or bypass network monitoring.
Extension permissions are another frequent pitfall. “Read and change data on websites” or access to tabs can be necessary for a feature, but it is broader than a basic bookmark tool needs. Narrow permissions, remove unused add-ons, and reassess access after an extension update.
Finally, do not choose from a single speed headline. Apple’s figures are attributed claims, and no current matched independent comparison establishes a universal Safari victory or Chrome penalty. Site compatibility and your own extensions matter more than a generic average.

Setup checklist before you decide
Safari
- Confirm that the Apple devices you use are signed in to the intended iCloud account.
- Review which Safari information is enabled for iCloud syncing, especially history, tabs, AutoFill information, and installed extensions.
- Use Private Browsing for sessions you do not want stored in iCloud; remember that it is not complete anonymity.
- Audit every installed extension’s access and privacy terms.
- Test the sites and media workloads that matter to you on your own hardware.
Chrome
- Decide whether to use Chrome Sync and sign in only on devices you control.
- Review individual sync categories rather than assuming every browser item should be uploaded.
- Check Safe Browsing and the controls for usage statistics, crash reports, personalization, and URL metrics.
- Install extensions from the Chrome Web Store and set each extension’s site access to the narrowest useful option.
- Repeat your real browsing and battery workload with your normal extensions enabled.
Bottom line: match the browser to your ecosystem
Safari is the natural recommendation for an Apple-first reader who values built-in tracking protections and iCloud continuity. Chrome is the practical recommendation for Google Account sync, Chrome Web Store extensions, and browsing across Windows, macOS, and Linux. For performance, use Apple’s figures as attributed claims—not guarantees—and make the final call after testing the sites, extensions, and battery workload you actually use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Safari more private than Chrome?
Safari enables several anti-tracking protections by design, including third-party-cookie blocking for tracking, URL-parameter removal in Private Browsing, and hiding the IP address from known trackers. Chrome combines Safe Browsing with configurable diagnostics, personalization, URL-metric, and sync choices. The better fit depends on which data practices matter most to you.
Does Chrome track what I browse?
Chrome does not send every visited URL in every configuration. Google says usage statistics and crash reports are enabled by default but can be turned off, and URL metrics are sent only when both relevant improvement and search-browsing settings are enabled. Separately, Chrome Sync can store categories such as history and open tabs in your Google Account when you enable them.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Safari sync my tabs?
Yes. Safari can sync tabs and tab groups through iCloud across supported Apple devices. Private Browsing tabs are not stored in iCloud or synchronized.
Can I use Chrome extensions in Safari?
Not automatically. Safari extensions are distributed through the App Store, and Apple says some web extensions built for other browsers can be converted. Availability, features, and operating-system support may differ, so every Chrome extension should be checked individually.
Which browser is faster, Safari or Chrome?
Apple says Safari is “+45% faster on average at loading frequently visited websites than Chrome” and offers up to five more hours of streaming video. Those are Apple’s claims, not a current matched independent benchmark. Your hardware, OS, sites, tabs, network, and extensions can produce a different result.
Do Safari and Chrome cost anything?
Both browsers are free software. The practical trade-offs involve device compatibility, cloud-account choices, extension availability, and the time needed to configure privacy and sync settings.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I use both browsers?
Using both can make sense when Safari handles Apple-device continuity while Chrome provides a work profile, cross-platform sync, or a required Chrome Web Store extension. Keep profiles and accounts separate and review which browser stores your passwords, history, and open tabs.
How should I limit extension permissions?
Install from the official catalog, read the requested access, and grant only what the feature needs. Chrome lets you limit access to the extension interaction, current site, selected sites, or all sites. Safari’s default restriction helps, but the developer’s privacy terms still matter.
The Bottom Line
Safari is best for Apple-first users who want built-in tracking protections and iCloud continuity. Chrome is best for Google Account sync, Chrome Web Store extensions, and Windows, macOS, or Linux workflows. Test your own sites and extensions before treating any performance claim as decisive.
