To make Safari restore your previous windows automatically, open Safari > Settings > General and set Safari opens with to All windows from last session. If you want private windows excluded, choose All non-private windows from last session instead.
Set Safari to reopen your previous windows
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings. In older macOS versions, the menu item is called Preferences.
- Click General.
- Open the Safari opens with menu and select All windows from last session.
For the privacy-conscious option, choose All non-private windows from last session. Safari will restore the prior session’s non-private windows rather than all of its windows. Apple documents both choices in its Safari General settings guide.
If the restore option is unavailable or stops working
Check macOS’s Close windows when quitting an application setting. Apple notes that some Safari startup options depend on this system setting.

Hold Shift while opening Safari. This bypasses restoration for that launch without changing the saved settings.
Reopen the previous session from History
In Safari, choose History > Reopen All Windows from Last Session. This is a manual fallback if you need to bring the prior windows back after opening Safari without them. See Apple’s instructions for reopening Safari windows and tabs.
