Safari’s features solve different problems: iCloud keeps ordinary browsing data current across your Apple devices; profiles separate selected work, school, and personal data; Private Browsing reduces what Safari stores or shares; and extensions add functions but can receive webpage access you should review. Extensions may be available across devices, yet you often still install the app or extension on each device.
What Safari extensions, profiles, Private Browsing, and iCloud sync each do
These options are complementary rather than competing modes. Choosing the right one depends on whether you need continuity, persistent separation, a temporary session, or extra browser functions.

How Safari syncs across Mac, iPhone, and iPad
Turn on Safari in iCloud while signed in to the same Apple Account on each device. Apple documents the synchronized categories in Keep Safari in sync across your devices with iCloud. Depending on device support and software version, ordinary Safari data can include:
- Bookmarks and Reading List items.
- Browsing history.
- Open tabs and Tab Groups.
- Safari profiles.
- Selected Safari settings.
- Whether a supported extension is enabled or disabled.
Syncing an extension’s state is not the same as installing its underlying app everywhere. If an extension is missing on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, check that it supports that device, then install it locally before expecting its enabled state to appear. Apple’s documentation also requires the same Apple Account, Safari enabled in iCloud, and the relevant extension-sharing settings for cross-device availability.

Enable Safari in iCloud
Apple’s labels can vary slightly by operating-system release. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your Apple Account, choose iCloud, select See All if necessary, and turn on Safari. On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings, select your Apple Account, choose iCloud, then enable Safari. Repeat the check on every device that should participate.
After enabling it, allow time for the first synchronization. A tab opened in a normal Safari window should eventually appear in the device’s tab view. Private tabs and windows are intentionally excluded from that shared list.
What is not included in shared open tabs
Private pages are not stored in iCloud open tabs. On Mac, Apple says private windows are not transferred by Handoff; on iPhone, private tabs do not appear in History or in the tab lists for other devices. This is a privacy behavior, not a synchronization failure.

Install and control Safari extensions
Install an extension on Mac
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Safari Extensions to browse available add-ons.
- Choose an extension and use its Mac App Store listing to install it. Apple describes the Mac App Store as the safest and easiest discovery and installation route; Apple reviews extensions distributed there.
- Return to Safari and choose Safari > Settings > Extensions.
- Select the extension to turn it on, inspect its permissions, and choose the websites it may access. Restrict access when the feature does not require broad page access.
App Store settings can update an installed extension automatically when Automatic Updates is selected. Automatic updating is convenient, but periodically revisit permissions because an update can change an extension’s behavior or requested access.

Understand extension website access
Apple warns that extensions may access webpage content. Treat an extension as software with a defined trust boundary, not as a harmless visual setting. Install only add-ons you recognize, read the permission prompt, and choose a narrower option such as access to the current website or explicitly approved sites when available. If a page tool works only after granting access to all websites, decide whether that convenience justifies the broader exposure.
Make an extension available on other Apple devices
Cross-device availability depends on compatible Safari support, the same Apple Account, Safari enabled in iCloud, and extension-sharing controls. Availability still does not guarantee an automatic installation. Install the extension’s companion app or extension on each device where Apple provides it, then check that device’s Safari extension settings.
An extension can be available to several profiles, but it is managed separately in each profile. A new profile has extensions turned off by default. On iPhone, Apple allows you to choose which profiles can use an installed extension; review that assignment instead of assuming that enabling it once applies everywhere. Create Safari profiles for lasting separation
Profiles suit contexts that persist for weeks or months: for example, one profile for an employer’s sites, one for school, and one for personal shopping. Each profile has its own browsing context, but it is not a separate Apple identity and should not be treated as a security boundary.

Create a profile on Mac
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings.
- Select Profiles, then use the add button to create a profile.
- Give it a recognizable name and choose the desired visual details and favorites behavior.
- Open a new window in that profile and sign in to the sites belonging to that context.

Create a profile on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Safari.
- Tap New Profile, name the profile, and configure its appearance and favorites.
- Switch profiles from Safari’s profile controls when opening tabs for that context.
Apple’s current iPhone guide is Create multiple Safari profiles on iPhone. The exact menu wording can change with iOS releases.
What a profile separates—and what it does not
Safari separates a profile’s history, cookies, website data, and Tab Groups. Because cookies and site data are new for the profile, websites may ask you to sign in again. Passwords stored in iCloud Keychain and AutoFill information can remain available across profiles, which is useful for convenience but means a profile does not isolate credentials from another profile.

A profile created on one device may therefore appear elsewhere, but its extension settings are still managed per profile and per device.

Delete a profile carefully
Deleting a profile removes its associated history and website data. Apple’s device-specific instructions differ in how favorites or bookmarks are retained, so review the Mac or iPhone deletion steps before confirming. Export or record anything you need from that profile first; do not assume that deleting a profile is reversible.

Start a private window on Mac
- Open Safari.
- Choose File > New Private Window.
- Use that window for the pages you do not want added to normal Safari history or shared as open tabs.
Apple’s Mac guide, Browse privately in Safari on Mac, states: “When you browse privately, the details of your browsing aren’t saved, and the websites you visit aren’t shared with your other Apple devices.” In practical terms, Safari does not save the visited pages or AutoFill entries from that private session, private pages are not put in iCloud open tabs, and Handoff does not transfer private windows.
Downloads are the important exception: files downloaded from a private window remain on the Mac, even though Safari omits them from the private window’s downloads list. Check the computer’s download folder and remove files separately if they contain sensitive information.
Start Private Browsing on iPhone
- Open Safari and tap the Tabs button.
- Switch to Private Browsing.
- Tap the add-tab button to open a private tab.
On a passcode-protected iPhone, private browsing locks when it is not in use, although Apple notes that the lock may not occur immediately. Private tabs do not appear in History or in the tab lists shown for other devices. Extensions that can access browsing data are off by default in Private Browsing. Know what Private Browsing does not promise
Private Browsing limits Safari’s local saving and cross-device sharing; it does not make traffic invisible to a website, an employer or school network, an internet provider, or every person who controls the network. Websites can still observe requests and may identify you through a sign-in or other techniques. Do not use the private label as a promise of complete anonymity.
Private Browsing and Private Relay are different
Private Relay is an optional iCloud+ service intended to add network privacy. It is separate from Safari’s Private Browsing mode and is not required for Safari synchronization or private tabs. Availability varies by region. If you use Private Relay, evaluate it as a network-privacy feature; if you use Private Browsing, evaluate it as a Safari session and local-history feature. Fix common Safari setup problems
A tab or bookmark is missing on another device
- Confirm both devices use the same Apple Account.
- Confirm Safari is enabled under iCloud on both devices.
- Check whether the missing item was opened in Private Browsing; private tabs are intentionally excluded.
- For profiles, switch to the profile that created the item. Profile data is not interchangeable with another profile’s history or Tab Groups.
- Allow time for an initial sync and verify that the devices use Safari versions that support the feature.
An extension is enabled on one device but absent on another
- Check that the extension supports the second device’s Safari release.
- Install its companion app or extension locally where required; iCloud can sync state without copying the installation.
- Open that device’s Safari extension settings and turn it on.
- Switch to each relevant profile and enable the extension there. New profiles start with extensions off.
A website asks you to sign in again
That is expected after switching to a profile with new cookies and site data. Sign in within the intended profile, and verify that you have not accidentally opened the site in a different profile or Private Browsing.

Private browsing seems to retain something
Check whether the item is a downloaded file, which remains on a Mac, or a page opened outside the private window. Also remember that Private Browsing controls Safari’s saving behavior, not what a website or network can observe.
