To enable Safari’s developer features on a Mac, open Safari, choose Safari > Settings from the macOS menu bar, select Advanced, and turn on Show features for web developers. Safari then adds the Develop menu to its menu bar, where its web-development and inspection tools are available.
Safari does not use a separate “Developer Mode” switch
People often search for a Safari “Developer Mode” setting, but Apple’s current macOS wording is Show features for web developers. That checkbox is the control that enables Safari’s developer features. You do not need to download a developer package, install a plug-in, buy anything, or connect a physical accessory.
The setting applies to Safari on macOS. It is found inside Safari’s own Settings window, not in the Mac’s system Settings app.

- Open Safari. The Safari application must be active so that its menus appear in the macOS menu bar.
- In the menu bar at the top of the screen, choose Safari > Settings.
- In the Settings window, click Advanced.
- Select Show features for web developers.
- Close Settings and look at Safari’s menu bar. A Develop menu should now appear.
These are Apple’s current menu names. On a Mac using another language, the words may be translated, but the relevant control remains in Safari’s Advanced settings.

How to confirm that it worked
Safari developer features are enabled when Develop is visible in Safari’s menu bar. Select that menu to see Safari’s available web-development commands, including its inspection tools. If you opened Settings from another application, you may be looking at macOS System Settings instead of Safari’s Settings; return to Safari and repeat the procedure with Safari active.
What enabling the setting makes available
The checkbox does more than add a menu label. It reveals Safari’s Develop menu and the developer tools associated with it. Apple describes these tools as useful for checking that websites work with standards-based web browsers.

With the feature enabled, Safari also exposes Developer and Feature Flags settings in Safari Settings. The exact commands shown in the Develop menu can depend on the Safari and macOS version installed on the Mac.
Using Web Inspector after enabling the menu
Web Inspector is part of Safari’s developer-tool set. Once the Develop menu is present, open that menu to access Safari’s web-inspection commands. These tools let a developer examine a page while diagnosing layout, markup, styles, scripts, and related browser behavior.

Enabling the menu does not change a website’s content or publish anything online. It simply makes Safari’s built-in development commands available in the browser interface.
If the Develop menu is still missing
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm Safari is the active app. The menu bar changes with the active application. Click a Safari window, then look again for Safari in the menu bar.
- Reopen the correct settings pane. Choose Safari > Settings > Advanced and check whether Show features for web developers is selected.
- Check the label in your language. A localized macOS installation may translate both the setting and the Develop menu. Look for the equivalent web-developer option in Safari’s Advanced settings.
- Allow the setting to take effect. After selecting the checkbox, close the Settings window and inspect Safari’s menu bar again. If Safari’s menus were already open, clicking the Safari window can make the updated menu state easier to see.
- Make sure you are changing Safari’s settings, not macOS settings. The required path begins with the Safari menu while Safari is running.
If the checkbox is selected but no developer menu appears, return to the Advanced pane, clear the checkbox, select it again, and then check the menu with a Safari window active. The Apple procedure does not require a separate download or installer.

Menu names can vary by language and software version
Apple’s current English label is Show features for web developers. A Mac configured in another language will show translated names, so searching for the exact English phrase may not help. The reliable locations are Safari’s Settings window and its Advanced section.

Safari and macOS releases can also change the surrounding layout of Settings. If the wording or placement looks different, identify the Advanced section first and look for the option that enables web-developer features. The result you are checking for is the same: a Develop menu in Safari’s menu bar.

Requirements, downloads, and cost
- You need a Mac with Safari installed and able to open normally.
- The feature is built into Safari.
- No plug-in, purchase, subscription, or physical accessory is required.
- Use Safari’s own menu bar to reach the setting; it is not a separate macOS utility.
Quick answer
Open Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Advanced, select Show features for web developers, and then use the new Develop menu. If it is not visible, verify the checkbox while Safari is the active application and account for translated menu labels.
