S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope is strongest when it lets you lose yourself in the Zone: its two new regions promise fresh places to explore, quests and a substantial parallel story. Its weaker point is the central Duty–Freedom conflict, which one review found less visible in the wider world than its stakes suggest. Whether that trade-off works for you depends on how much you value atmosphere and exploration over a faction war that reshapes the Zone.
What Cost of Hope adds to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2
Released on August 20, 2026, Cost of Hope is the first major story expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. It follows Skif in a story that runs parallel to the base game’s campaign. The expansion launched alongside Back to the Zone — Update 2.0, which GSC Game World says is free for all players. GSC’s release announcement and its Xbox Wire overview outline the expansion’s scope and launch details.

The new story centers on renewed tensions between Duty and Freedom after an uneasy peace under the D4 Treaty. GSC frames the factions around opposing views of the Zone: Duty considers it a danger to humanity, while Freedom sees it as something to explore and use. Your decisions affect the story’s outcomes, so the conflict is more than background lore, though this review avoids spoiling its endings.
Two new territories to explore
The expansion opens Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP). GSC describes both as large territories containing a hub, smaller locations, quests and activities. That gives the expansion a compelling reason to return: the promise is not simply a new stretch of combat, but more of the Zone’s uneasy, atmospheric exploration.
#1 Best Overall
GSC calls the story a “dozens of hours” experience. That is the publisher’s estimate, not an independently measured average. The available review estimates differ considerably: Insider Gaming’s reviewer put one story run at eight to ten hours and estimated a few more hours to see the alternate ending. Those figures describe one reviewer’s experience and should not be treated as a universal completion-time benchmark.
Is Cost of Hope worth playing?
The strongest case for the expansion is its new territory and the atmosphere built around it. Try Hard Guides praised the locations, horror elements and story, while Insider Gaming highlighted the locations and branching paths. AltChar’s review describes a slow opening that gathers momentum after a major story turn. Together, those impressions suggest a DLC whose appeal grows as its narrative gets moving, rather than one that has to make an immediate impression.

The main reservation is whether the Duty–Freedom war feels as consequential in play as it sounds in the setup. Try Hard Guides argues that the conflict is rarely visible beyond cutscenes and occasional encounters, and has little effect outside the expansion’s story. That is a critical judgment, not an established fact about every player’s experience, but it points to a meaningful tension: the expansion can offer a compelling conflict on paper without making the broader Zone feel transformed by it.

Insider Gaming’s reviewer gave the expansion a score of 9 but considered its $29.99 launch price high for the estimated eight-to-ten-hour main run. Try Hard Guides likewise recommended it to fans while criticizing the price. These are dated review judgments about launch pricing, not quotes of current store prices. If you mainly want more places to explore and a consequential story, the expansion has a clear draw; if you expect a faction war that visibly changes the wider world, its execution may leave you wanting more.

Should you play the base game first?
The story follows Skif in parallel with the main campaign, and GSC says players can begin the expansion during a campaign. Its overview also describes an Advanced Start option for accessing the story. That means the DLC is not presented as requiring you to finish the base game first. If you want the surrounding campaign context, continuing your existing playthrough is the natural route; if you want to reach the expansion’s story directly, check the game’s current menu instructions, since interfaces and access details can change with updates.
What platforms support the expansion?
GSC lists PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5 for Cost of Hope. Xbox Wire also says Xbox Play Anywhere is supported for the base game and expansion. The sources establish platform support, but do not establish current storefront prices, availability by edition, or platform-specific performance differences.
Should you side with Duty or Freedom?
There is no universally correct choice established by the available information. GSC presents the factions as competing philosophies: Duty wants to contain a threat it sees as dangerous to humanity; Freedom favors exploring and using the Zone. Reviewers report two endings, with decisions at key points determining which one you reach. Choose according to the perspective you want to pursue, rather than treating one faction as the objectively right answer. For a spoiler-free first playthrough, make the choice that feels consistent with your reading of the Zone and live with its consequences.
