Buy a Ryzen AI Max laptop if you want a compact, all-purpose computer with unusually strong integrated graphics. Buy a conventional gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU if maximum frame rates, a higher-tier graphics processor, or predictable gaming performance matters more. The Radeon 8060S in the tested ASUS ROG Flow Z13 can run in the broad performance range of a low-power RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, but results change by game, resolution, settings, and laptop configuration. “Integrated” does not automatically mean slow, and “dedicated” does not identify one fixed level of performance.

The short answer: choose by the complete laptop, not the chip name

The Ryzen AI Max comparison is unusual because AMD’s top mobile platform places a very large integrated GPU beside a powerful CPU. In the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, the Radeon 8060S uses system memory rather than a separate graphics card. That design enables a compact convertible such as the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 to deliver gaming performance that Notebookcheck found broadly comparable with an RTX 4070 Laptop GPU configured at 65–75 watts.

That result is not a universal “8060S equals RTX 4070” rule. Notebookcheck recorded wins and losses for the two GPUs across different games and resolutions. A conventional gaming laptop can also contain anything from an RTX 5050 to an RTX 5080; a higher-tier discrete GPU can be substantially faster in the right game and configuration. The fair comparison is therefore between two complete laptops tested at matching settings.

  • Choose Ryzen AI Max when portability, a compact chassis, strong CPU performance, and capable integrated graphics are equally important.
  • Choose a dedicated-GPU gaming laptop when gaming performance is the first priority, you want a higher graphics tier, or you need the most consistent frame rates at demanding settings.
  • Do not decide from “integrated” or “dedicated” alone. Check the exact GPU, its power limit, cooling design, memory, display, weight, price, and game results.

What the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 platform actually includes

AMD’s product specification lists the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 as a 16-core, 32-thread Zen 5 processor with 40 graphics cores. Its default thermal design power is 55 watts, and AMD allows a configurable 45–120W range. The platform supports up to 128GB of LPDDR5x system memory. These are processor-level specifications; a laptop maker can configure cooling, memory capacity, firmware, and power behavior differently.

Ryzen AI Max+ 395 specification What it means when comparing laptops
16 CPU cores / 32 threads Substantial multithreaded capacity for compiling, rendering, code work, and other CPU-heavy tasks alongside gaming.
40 graphics cores A much larger integrated graphics implementation than ordinary laptop CPUs; performance still depends on memory bandwidth, power, and cooling.
55W default TDP AMD’s reference default, not a promise that every notebook will sustain the same power.
45–120W configurable TDP Laptop makers can tune the processor for a thinner, quieter design or a higher-performance design. AMD’s exact wording is “AMD Configurable TDP (cTDP) 45-120W.”
Up to 128GB LPDDR5x system memory Capacity is shared by the CPU and integrated GPU; the actual laptop may ship with less and may not offer upgrades.

See AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 specifications for the current processor details. AMD’s AI Max family also includes variants with different graphics-core counts, so one Max-branded model should not be treated as representative of every other model.

How Radeon 8060S compares with an RTX 4070 laptop GPU

The most useful independent comparison is Notebookcheck’s review of the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 GZ302EA, a compact convertible using Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and Radeon 8060S. In its game tests, Notebookcheck described the 8060S as broadly neck-and-neck with an RTX 4070 Laptop GPU operating at 65–75W. That is a comparison with a particular power range, not with every RTX 4070 laptop.

Game and resolution differences matter. The review’s tables include tests at 1080p and 1440p, and neither GPU won every title. In one game the 8060S may lead; in another the RTX 4070 Laptop GPU may lead. Driver versions, graphics presets, ray-tracing options, upscaling, cooling, and the laptop’s power policy can all change the outcome. Read the individual game rows rather than turning the review into a single FPS average.

The physical design is part of the result. The Flow Z13 is a compact laptop/tablet convertible, so its performance comes from a high-end integrated design operating inside a small chassis. Another Ryzen AI Max notebook may use a different sustained-power limit, memory configuration, or cooling system and therefore produce a different result. The review demonstrates what that tested configuration can do; it is not a guarantee for the entire Ryzen AI Max family.

AMD makes a separate performance statement: it says Radeon 8060S delivered a 14% average performance increase over the RTX 4070 discrete graphics in the previous-generation ROG Flow Z13. That figure is AMD’s own vendor test, not an independent universal benchmark. Treat it as a claim about the specified comparison and configuration, not proof that every 8060S laptop is 14% faster than every RTX 4070 laptop. The claim appears in AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 performance article.

Why “a dedicated GPU” is not one performance category

A discrete GPU is a separate graphics processor in the laptop, but the word “dedicated” says nothing about its tier or power limit. Current laptop testing spans RTX 5050, RTX 5070, and RTX 5080 systems. Those products target very different performance levels, and even two laptops with the same GPU name can run at different wattages.

Question Why it changes the result
Which GPU model? An RTX 5050, RTX 5070, and RTX 5080 are not interchangeable reference points. The model determines the underlying performance tier and feature set.
What is the laptop GPU power limit? A higher configured power limit can sustain higher clocks, while a thin system may use a lower limit. Compare the manufacturer’s stated limit or a detailed review.
How good is the cooling? Heat removal affects sustained performance. Short bursts can look similar while longer game sessions diverge.
Which CPU and memory are installed? CPU limits, memory capacity, and memory speed can affect frame rates and frame-time consistency, especially in CPU-heavy games.
What resolution and settings were tested? 1080p, 1440p, ultra presets, ray tracing, and upscaling place different demands on the GPU. A result at one setting cannot be copied to another.

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 tested gaming-laptop roundup illustrates this range with systems using RTX 5050, RTX 5070, and RTX 5080 graphics. Its results are useful for understanding how broad the dedicated-GPU market is, but they are not a controlled, same-lab comparison against the Flow Z13. Do not combine scores from different publications into a synthetic average.

Integrated versus dedicated graphics: the practical trade-offs

Shared memory versus a separate graphics subsystem

Radeon 8060S is integrated into the Ryzen AI Max platform and draws from the laptop’s system memory. That lets one compact package handle CPU and graphics work, but memory capacity and bandwidth are shared. A discrete-GPU laptop has a separate graphics processor; the exact model and laptop power limit dominate its performance. The practical question is not which label sounds faster, but whether the chosen configuration supplies enough graphics throughput and memory for your games.

Compact all-purpose design versus gaming-laptop hardware

The Flow Z13 example is a convertible laptop/tablet rather than a conventional, thick gaming notebook. That form factor can matter more than a benchmark margin if you carry the machine to classes, meetings, or travel and also want to play at home. Conventional gaming laptops cover many sizes and weights, so compare the specific candidate rather than assuming every dedicated-GPU model is bulky or every integrated model is light.

Mixed CPU, graphics, and creator workloads

The Max+ 395 combines 16 CPU cores with a large integrated GPU and shared system memory. That can suit a buyer who alternates between games, code compilation, media work, and GPU-accelerated applications without carrying a separate high-power graphics design. Dedicated-GPU notebooks can be excellent for the same workloads, but their balance depends on the exact CPU, GPU, cooling, and memory configuration.

Upgrades and long-term flexibility

Do not assume that a laptop’s maximum memory or storage is upgradeable. The Max+ 395 specification allows up to 128GB of LPDDR5x, but a particular notebook may solder a smaller amount. A discrete-GPU model may also have soldered memory and a fixed GPU. Check the service manual and the exact configuration before treating upgradeability as a buying advantage.

Is Ryzen AI Max good for gaming?

Yes—when “good” means modern gaming capability in a compact computer. The tested Radeon 8060S can land near a 65–75W RTX 4070 Laptop GPU in Notebookcheck’s games, which puts it far above the integrated graphics found in ordinary thin-and-light laptops. It is a credible gaming choice rather than a compromise that only works for older titles.

There are two important limits. First, performance is game-dependent: the 8060S does not win every test, and resolution or settings can reverse the ranking. Second, the comparison is centered on one Flow Z13 configuration. A different Ryzen AI Max model may use another graphics-core count, memory arrangement, or power profile. Confirm results for the exact laptop you intend to buy.

If you are targeting the highest refresh rates, heavy ray tracing, or a higher-tier GPU such as an RTX 5080 system, a dedicated-GPU laptop is the safer direction. If you mainly play at sensible settings and value a compact convertible that also handles demanding CPU work, the 8060S-class design can be a strong fit.

Who should buy each type?

Buy a Ryzen AI Max laptop when these priorities match

  • You want one compact machine for gaming, productivity, and creator work.
  • You value a convertible or tablet-style design, as in the tested Flow Z13, more than a conventional gaming chassis.
  • You want strong integrated graphics without selecting a separate GPU tier.
  • Your games perform well in the specific 1080p or 1440p tests you care about.
  • You can accept that system memory is shared with graphics and that some configurations may not be upgradeable.

Buy a conventional dedicated-GPU laptop when these priorities match

  • Maximum game performance is the main goal.
  • You are considering a higher-tier discrete GPU, where the performance gap can be substantial in particular games.
  • You need a clear graphics power limit and game benchmarks for a specific model.
  • You prefer a conventional gaming design and are willing to compare its size, weight, cooling, and charger.
  • You want to choose among several discrete-GPU tiers rather than accept one integrated configuration.

Wait and compare more closely when your decision is balanced

  • Your budget, country, target games, and preferred resolution are not yet fixed.
  • The candidate listings omit the laptop GPU’s power limit or do not show game results at matching settings.
  • You are comparing a Ryzen AI Max variant other than the 40-graphics-core Max+ 395 and are assuming the same performance.

How to compare two actual laptops step by step

  1. Write down the exact configurations. Record the processor, graphics model, graphics power limit, system memory capacity, storage, display resolution and refresh rate, chassis weight, and listed price for each laptop.
  2. Define your gaming target. List the games you actually play, the resolution you intend to use, and whether ray tracing, an ultra preset, or a specific upscaling mode is required.
  3. Match benchmark conditions. Prefer tests of the same game at the same resolution and graphics settings. Do not compare a 1080p performance-mode result with a 1440p ultra result.
  4. Check sustained behavior. Look for longer-session testing or notes about fan modes and power limits. A short burst benchmark does not establish how the machine behaves after it heats up.
  5. Price the complete system. Include the memory and storage capacity you actually need, the required charger, and any configuration premium. A cheaper bare specification may not be the better value once matched.
  6. Evaluate non-gaming work. If you compile code, render video, run virtual machines, or use GPU-accelerated applications, compare CPU cores, memory capacity, and software support—not only game FPS.
  7. Make the form-factor decision. Compare weight, thickness, keyboard and tablet use, display size, ports, and portability. These are daily-use differences that a GPU name cannot capture.
  8. Verify the exact model before purchase. Retail listings can use similar names for different memory, display, or power configurations. Match the full model identifier to the review and specification sheet.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“The 8060S is an RTX 4070”

That wording drops the conditions that make the comparison meaningful. Say instead that Notebookcheck found the Radeon 8060S in the reviewed Flow Z13 broadly comparable with an RTX 4070 Laptop GPU at 65–75W, with game-by-game variation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Any dedicated GPU will be faster”

A dedicated GPU can be lower-tier or heavily power-limited. Compare the exact model, wattage, and tests. The current laptop market includes RTX 5050, RTX 5070, and RTX 5080 systems, so “dedicated” covers a wide range.

Comparing chip specifications without the laptop

Two systems with the same processor or GPU can differ in cooling, firmware, memory, display resolution, and power policy. Use complete-laptop reviews and identify the tested configuration beside every performance claim.

Mixing independent and vendor benchmarks

Notebookcheck’s results and AMD’s 14% statement answer different questions. The former is an independent review of a specific system; the latter is AMD’s own test claim. Keep those contexts separate.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The available independent evidence is strongest for one 2025 ASUS ROG Flow Z13 configuration and an RTX 4070 Laptop GPU operating at 65–75W. It establishes that Radeon 8060S-class integrated graphics can approach a lower-power discrete GPU in selected games. It does not establish one average performance number for all Ryzen AI Max laptops versus all dedicated-GPU laptops.

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup supplies useful current context by testing several discrete-GPU tiers, but its systems and test methods are not a controlled cross-review against Notebookcheck’s Flow Z13. Use each source to understand its own tested machines, then seek a same-review comparison when choosing between two specific products.

For processor-family background, AMD’s CES 2025 processor portfolio announcement describes the broader Ryzen AI Max introduction. Pair that manufacturer information with independent tests of the exact laptop you plan to buy.

Final buying decision

Choose Ryzen AI Max when you want the most capable integrated-graphics experience in a compact, multipurpose laptop and the exact model’s game tests meet your targets. Choose a dedicated-GPU gaming laptop when frame rate is the deciding factor, when you are comparing higher tiers such as RTX 5070 or RTX 5080 systems, or when model-specific testing shows a clear advantage in your games.

The decisive evidence is not the word “integrated” or “dedicated.” It is the complete configuration: GPU model and power limit, matching game tests, resolution and settings, cooling, memory, display, price, and how well the machine fits your non-gaming work.
