For a Ryzen 9 7900X gaming PC, choose an AM5 motherboard whose expansion, storage, networking, and memory support fit your build; you do not need an X670E board just to use the processor. AMD lists X670E, X670, B650E, B650, X870E, X870, B840, and B850 as supported chipset families. The ASUS TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI and MSI X670E GAMING PLUS WIFI are two documented X670E options, but the available specifications do not establish that either delivers higher gaming frame rates or better value. AMD’s AM5 chipset overview and the model specifications below are useful starting points.
What motherboard should you get for a Ryzen 9 7900X?
Start with an AM5 motherboard, then choose its chipset and features according to the parts you intend to install. AMD identifies eight supported chipset families: X670E, X670, B650E, B650, X870E, X870, B840, and B850. X670E is one compatible option, not a requirement. A B650-family board may suit a build that does not need the additional I/O or expansion features of a different model.
A motherboard chipset is not, by itself, evidence of better gaming performance. The specifications available for the two named X670E boards confirm model identity and platform compatibility, but do not provide controlled gaming comparisons, current prices, or stock information. Select a board for the capabilities you will use rather than assuming a more premium chipset increases frame rates.
What the Ryzen 9 7900X requires
AMD lists the processor as a 12-core, 24-thread AM5 CPU with a maximum boost clock of up to 5.6 GHz and a 170 W default TDP. These are processor specifications, not a guarantee of performance from a particular motherboard. AMD also lists a maximum operating temperature (Tjmax) of 95°C; that is a processor limit, not a recommended target for every workload or cooling setup. See AMD’s Ryzen 9 7900X specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- The world's best gaming desktop processor that can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 12 Cores and 24 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 4" architecture
- 5.6 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 76 MB cache, DDR5-5200 support
- AMD Socket AM5(LGA 1718): Ready for AMD Ryzen 7000 Series desktop processors

Memory and BIOS checks
The 7900X supports DDR5 memory and two memory channels. AMD lists DDR5-5200 for its two-DIMM configurations and DDR5-3600 for its four-DIMM configurations. Those figures describe AMD’s listed configurations; actual compatibility and supported speeds depend on the selected memory kit, motherboard, and BIOS. Check the board’s memory support list for the exact kit, and confirm that the board supports the 7900X with the BIOS version installed or available to you.
Cooling is a separate build decision
The boxed processor does not include a thermal solution. AMD says, “Liquid cooler recommended for optimal performance.” Treat that as AMD’s cooling guidance rather than proof that one specific cooler is mandatory for every gaming use case. Choose a cooler suitable for the processor and case, and verify that the motherboard and case provide the headers and clearance your cooler needs.

Two documented X670E boards to investigate
These are concrete AM5/X670E candidates confirmed by manufacturer materials. The supplied specifications establish their identities and platform fit, but not a complete head-to-head feature comparison, current regional pricing, availability, or gaming performance.
| Model | What the cited manufacturer material establishes | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI | ASUS includes it among its X670-series specifications as an AM5 X670E model. | Check the current specification page or PDF revision for memory support, PCIe slots and lane sharing, M.2 and SATA connections, USB ports, networking, board size, BIOS tools, headers, and warranty. ASUS X670 series specifications. |
| MSI X670E GAMING PLUS WIFI | MSI’s datasheet identifies it as a Socket AM5 board. | Check MSI’s current specification page or datasheet for memory support, PCIe slots and lane sharing, M.2 and SATA connections, USB ports, networking, board size, BIOS tools, headers, and warranty. MSI X670E GAMING PLUS WIFI datasheet. |
How to match a board to your gaming build
Compare the current manufacturer specifications for the exact board revision, not just the chipset name. Prioritize features that affect your planned parts and setup:
Rank #3
- The best for creators meets the best for gamers, can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 12 Cores and 24 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 4" architecture
- 5.6 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 76 MB cache, DDR5-5200 support
- AMD AM5 Socket: Supports AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs with AMD EXPO & Intel XMP Memory Module Support
- Fit: Match the board’s ATX, micro-ATX, or mini-ITX format to the case. Confirm clearance for the graphics card, cooler, and installed drives.
- Expansion: Check PCIe generation and slot layout, including whether installing an M.2 drive or another card changes lane availability or slot operation.
- Storage: Count the M.2 slots and SATA connections you need, and verify any shared connections or installation restrictions in the manual.
- Connectivity: Compare rear and internal USB connections, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi generation against your peripherals and network. A Wi-Fi label alone does not describe every port or networking capability.
- Memory: Check the board’s validated memory list for the exact DDR5 kit and the BIOS version needed for its supported settings.
- Setup and recovery: If convenient BIOS recovery matters, confirm whether the specific model has BIOS flashback or diagnostic indicators and how the manufacturer says to use them.
- Thermals and support: Check fan and pump headers, cooling-related board features, warranty terms, and the retailer’s return policy.
- Price and availability: Compare local listings for the exact model and revision. Current stock and regional prices are not established for either example above.
Can one of these boards make games run faster?
The cited material does not establish that either named motherboard produces higher frame rates than the other or than a suitable board from another supported AM5 chipset family. It also contains no independent, controlled gaming benchmark comparison. Do not treat the X670E label or a feature list as proof of faster gaming. For this CPU, use compatibility and the board features your system needs as the purchasing criteria; evaluate gaming performance using evidence about the processor, graphics card, memory, and tested system configuration rather than an unsupported motherboard ranking.
